I’ve watched sign shops pay $800 for a single front-lit letter. Same 304 stainless, same Samsung LEDs, same 5mm acrylic. We ship that letter for $120. That’s not a typo.
Here’s what factory-direct pricing really looks like, per piece or per square meter, before shipping and tariffs. These are our FOB Lu’an numbers—what leaves our dock. US retail installed prices sit in parentheses so you can see the markup.
You’re saving 50–65% on the product itself when you buy factory-direct. But that’s only half the story. Anyone who quotes you those numbers without talking installation, shipping, and tariffs is handing you fairy dust.
I’ll give you the whole picture. No sugar, no fluff, no Wikipedia language.
Look, the acrylic you pick determines whether your sign still looks new in three years or turns into a yellowed embarrassment. We use Mitsubishi and Degussa UV-resistant acrylic with 90–92% light transmittance. That stuff holds color 5–8 years outdoors. Domestic Chinese acrylic yellows in 1–2 years under full sun. I’ve seen it. When a customer sends me a photo of a competitor’s sign that looks like it’s been marinated in tea, I don’t need to guess the acrylic grade.
Thickness matters just as much. For letters under 2.5m, 2mm or 3mm works fine. Over 2.5m, you need 5mm or thicker or the face will flex and crack. I’ve seen this go wrong: a sign shop ordered a 4-foot channel letter with 2mm acrylic to save twelve bucks. First nor’easter, the face shattered like a car window. We won’t let you make that mistake.
Stainless steel grades are another place rookies bleed money. 304 is the workhorse—18% chromium, 8% nickel, 10+ years outdoors in normal conditions. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is perfect. But if your storefront is two blocks from the ocean, you need 316 marine-grade. It contains 2–3% molybdenum and lasts 15+ years in salt air. It costs 20–30% more, but swapping out a rusted sign after two years costs ten times that. We offer both, and I’ll tell you straight if 304 is a mistake for your location.
Aluminum is another option, especially for oversized letters on a tight weight budget. It weighs a third of steel, won’t rust, and anodized or powder-coated aluminum holds up 8–12 years. We use 1.0–1.6mm sheet. It’s not as rigid as stainless, but for large backlit pan faces or interior mall signs, it’s a smart choice. You can spec it for aluminum letters or combine it with an acrylic face in a light box.
LED modules are where the long-term cost hides. Cheap no-name LEDs deliver 12–18 months before they start flickering or dropping brightness. We use SMD 2835 chips at 100–150 lumens per watt, often Samsung or Osram, and our L70 rating is 50,000 hours. That translates to 5+ years of real lifespan, not Chinese catalog fantasy. For RGB, we switch to SMD 5050. For maximum punch, SMD 5730 at 40–60 lumens per chip. The difference? A restaurant that installed cheap modules called me six months later because half the letters were dim. The re-install cost more than the sign. Pay for proper LEDs once.
Here’s what nobody tells you: the biggest line item in your outdoor sign project isn’t the sign—it’s the installation and permits.
I’ve seen a four-letter channel sign set cost $600 to manufacture, then $2,400 to install. Crane rental, union labor, electrical hookup, city permit, engineering stamp. Even a simple storefront with pre-existing wiring can run $500–1,200 in labor. If your fascia needs reinforcement, double that.
You need to budget for a local licensed installer. Aochuang Sign doesn’t offer installation in your state. We’re a factory, not a sign shop on Main Street. What we do is ship every letter with mounting studs, a full-size paper template, and a wiring diagram that any competent electrician can follow. That cuts guesswork and time on site. Some of our regular buyers have their own install crews who can hang a full set in an afternoon because the kit is ready to bolt up.
Permits are your responsibility. ADAsignage, electrical permits, landlord approvals. We can provide spec sheets, material certs, and LED lumen data if your permit office asks. But we can’t pull the permit for you. Anyone who says they can handle that from China is lying to you.
Look, shipping from China isn’t a black box. I’m going to lay it out plain so you can make an honest comparison.
For a small order of a few letters, express courier is 7-10 days and costs $30–100 depending on weight. Air freight runs about 10 days at $4–12 per kilo. Sea freight is the cheap option for large signs or multiple sets: about 65 days transit, $80–200 per cubic meter for LCL (less-than-container-load), or $1,200–3,000 for a full 20-foot container. We ship sea freight worldwide, and we handle all export paperwork.
The ugly truth is the US Section 301 tariff on Chinese sign products adds about 30% on top of the invoice value. So a $120 front-lit letter declared at $120 gets about $36 in customs duty. Even with that, you’re still way below US retail. Do the math: $120 letter + $20 sea freight share + $36 tariff = $176 landed. A US manufacturer would charge you $500+ for the same build. You’re still saving 60%. The tariff stings, but it doesn’t kill the deal.
We mark commercial invoices accurately—no undervaluing. Don’t ask us to fudge customs forms. CBP isn’t stupid, and the penalty isn’t worth the few bucks you’d save.
We’re Aochuang Sign, based in Lu’an, Anhui. 3,000m² facility, 50+ skilled workers, ISO 9001 certified. We’ve been at this since 2010. I’ve burned my hands on hot acrylic and argued with LED suppliers about color temperature drift. We know what we’re good at, and we’re not going to pretend we’re something we aren’t.
What we do well: custom outdoor signs with real materials. We laser cut with ±0.1mm accuracy, TIG weld stainless, grind and polish to mirror or brushed #4, CNC rout acrylic, and assemble letters that pass a 8–12 hour burn-in test. Every order goes through 100% QC. Our minimum order is one piece. Lead time 7–15 days. Warranty: 2 years on LEDs, 1 year on power supplies. We ship ready-to-install signs with all mounting hardware.
Here’s where we draw the line. We don’t hold UL or ETL listings. If your city code requires a UL label on every illuminated sign, we can’t provide that directly. We build to NEC Article 600 standards, and many of our US clients use a local electrician to do a field inspection and get the sign approved. That process usually costs $150–300 per site—far cheaper than the $4,000–15,000 UL certification amortized across small orders. If your project absolutely demands a UL sticker, we’ll tell you upfront before you waste time.
We also aren’t a design agency. Send us vector artwork (.ai, .cdr, .eps, .dxf) and we’ll produce it exactly. We can do simple layout adjustments, but we won’t create your brand identity from scratch. The more precise your files, the faster we turn your order around. And while our IP65-rated signs genuinely handle water jets from any direction, don’t expect them to survive a hurricane-driven 2x4. We seal with neutral silicone and test every batch, but IP65 is dust-tight and water-resistant, not a submarine. For coastal installations, we recommend 316 stainless, reinforced mounts, and an engineer’s review of wind load.
I’ll make this simple. You send us your artwork and dimensions. We confirm materials, LED color temp (3000–6500K), finish, and production details. You get a digital proof with all measurements called out. You approve it. We build. Before packing, we send QC photos and a short video of the sign lit up. Pay the balance, we crate it, and it ships.
Mistakes happen when people skip steps. I’ve seen a contractor specify “warm white” and end up with 6000K cool white because the factory assumed. We don’t assume. We ask you to confirm CCT in writing. If you don’t know the difference between 3000K (hospitality) and 5000K (corporate), we’ll explain it and let you decide.
Don’t wait until the shipment arrives to check if it fits. Our template lets you mark drill points on the wall before the sign even lands in the country. If the template doesn’t align with your studs or raceway, catch it at the proof stage, not on install day.
We take payment by T/T with 50% deposit, 50% before shipment. For first-time buyers, that’s standard. For repeat customers, we occasionally net-30 after trust is built. We don’t do Alibaba trade assurance because it inflates cost without adding real protection—we’d rather give you a fair price and a direct line to a project manager who speaks English and knows our shop floor by name.
When you’re ready to price a real project, email us your specs. I’ll give you a breakdown of material options, LED choices, shipping methods, and the real landed cost. No sales pitch, no artificial deadlines. Just numbers you can take to your client and a factory that will build what we promise or make it right. I’ve been on the factory floor for 16 years; I don’t have time for anything less.
