I've been in this business 16 years, and I still meet sign shop owners who think factory direct means some Chinese middleman with a Gmail address.
Look, I don't blame you for being skeptical. I've watched this industry fill up with brokers who've never touched a bending brake, quoting you $400 for a letter they'll outsource to a shed with no laser cutter and no aging test.
That's not us. We're Aochuang Sign in Lu'an, Anhui. 3,000 square meters of floor space, 50+ welders and fabricators, and a stack of CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001 certificates that are actually current. I'll tell you exactly what we can do, what we can't do, and what you'll pay.
Here's what nobody tells you: the price on a factory quote isn't your final cost.
You still eat freight, tariff, and the time it takes to get through customs. But the savings are real. We ship a 24-inch front-lit channel letter with 304 stainless returns and quality Samsung LEDs for $120. The same letter installed by a US sign company runs $600 to $800. That's 50-65% off the product cost, before you add your own markup.
I've seen this go wrong: a contractor from Texas ordered 40 letters from some "factory" on Alibaba. Paid $45 per letter. Six months later, the acrylic yellowed to a urine color and the power supplies died one by one. He called me for a replacement order, but his customer already trusted him less. Cheap was expensive.
What we actually build, not what a website says we build
We make signs that go on buildings, in lobbies, and over storefronts. If you're quoting a storefront,
front-lit channel letters are our bread and butter. Acrylic face, aluminum or stainless returns, LED inside. They ship flat-packed with wiring harnesses and instructions.
For architects and high-end retail,
back-lit halo letters are where you make real margin. We cut the faces from 3mm or 5mm acrylic, weld the returns from 304 stainless, and mount LEDs on a back panel so the light spills onto the wall. That's a $700 to $1,000 installed letter in the US. We sell it for $80 to $120.
When the job calls for non-lit exterior signage,
stainless steel letters from 304 with a #4 brushed finish will outlive the lease. We can do mirror polish, PVD gold, or powder coat. 10+ years outdoors without rust. You can't get that from a plastic letter.
How to get a quote that doesn't waste your time
Send me this, and I'll have a price back in 24 hours.
- Letter height in millimeters or inches
- Material: acrylic face, stainless, aluminum, or something else
- Lit or non-lit? If lit, front-lit, halo, or dual-lit
- Quantity
- Any special finish: brushed, mirror, painted, PVD
That's it. You don't need a 40-page spec sheet. I don't need your company's tax ID.
The ugly truth is that most Chinese factories will quote you anything just to get the deposit. Then they change the material, drop the LED quality, and ghost you when the sign fails. I won't do that. If you ask for 0.8mm stainless on a 3-foot letter, I'll tell you it'll warp in the wind. If you insist on domestic acrylic to save $3 per letter, I'll warn you it yellows in 18 months. Then I'll let you decide. I'd rather lose one order than have you call me from a customer's roof two years later.
Materials: what lasts and what's garbage
Acrylic. Mitsubishi or Degussa UV-resistant sheet gives you 5-8 years before any noticeable yellowing. Domestic Chinese acrylic? 1-2 years, then it looks like old teeth. We stock both because some buyers only care about the number on the invoice. But I don't hide the difference.
LEDs. We use SMD 2835 modules with Samsung, Osram, or Blueview chips. L70 rating of 50,000 hours. Real-world lifespan 5+ years if you seal them right and use a decent power supply. Cheap LEDs from Shenzhen back alleys die in 12-18 months. That's not a warranty issue. That's a design choice.
Stainless steel. 304 is fine for Ohio and Texas. 18% chromium, 8% nickel. 10+ year outdoor life. 316 adds molybdenum for salt and chemical resistance, costs 20-30% more, and you only need it for Miami Beach or a refinery. Anyone who sells you 316 for a strip mall is padding the bill.
Certifications: don't believe the PDF
I've walked through factories that had a framed CE certificate from 2015 and no testing equipment. That certificate means nothing. CE marking costs 20,000 to 50,000 RMB and requires periodic audits. Ask to see the certificate with today's date. If they hesitate, walk away.
We hold CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001. They're current, they're real, and I'll send you copies. We don't have UL 48. It costs $4,000 to $15,000 and takes 4-9 months with quarterly audits. Most US customers don't need UL on channel letters unless the local inspector demands it. If yours does, I'll be straight with you: we can help you arrange third-party UL field evaluation, but it's slow and expensive. Don't let a factory tell you their CE is "equivalent" to UL. It's not. That's a lie I hear every week.
IP65 is the minimum for outdoor LEDs. It means dust-tight and protected against water jets. It does not mean your sign survives a hurricane. If you're on the coast, we can seal everything with extra neutral silicone and use IP66-rated power supplies. But no sign is IP68 submersible unless you're installing it in a swimming pool.
Shipping, tariffs, and the real landed cost
Small orders? Express takes 7-15 days and costs $30-$100 per box. Medium orders go air freight: 10-20 days at $4-$12 per kilogram. If you can wait 50-70 days, sea freight LCL runs $80-$200 per cubic meter. A full 20-foot container is $1,200 to $3,000 depending on fuel surcharges.
Then there's the Section 301 tariff. About 30% on most sign products from China. You pay that at the port, not to me. If you're buying from a US distributor, they already baked that tariff into their price. That's why factory direct still wins.
Here's what nobody tells you: when you order 10 letters at $60 each, the freight and tariff can be more than the product itself. I've seen small sign shops order 3 letters and pay $180 in shipping plus $90 in tariff. The letters were $210. Do the math. If your order is under $1,000, sometimes you're better off buying from a US importer who consolidated a container. I'll tell you that up front, even if it means you don't order from me this week.
What we can't do, and I won't pretend otherwise
We can't do rush jobs under 7 days. Our 10-step process includes an 8-12 hour aging test on every letter, and that test catches bad solder joints before they hit your dock. If a customer needs it faster, they're getting untested product from somewhere else. That's their risk.
We can't design your logo from scratch. Send me a vector file (AI, EPS, PDF). If you only have a JPG, I can have a designer vectorize it for a small fee, but don't ask me to create a brand identity. That's a different business.
We can't handle local permits, electrical hookups, or site surveys. We're a factory in Anhui. I've never stood in front of a building inspector in Kansas. If you need that service, hire a local sign company to install and get permits. You buy the product from us, they do the install, and everyone makes money.
We won't use cheap power supplies to hit a price. The power supply dies at year one, and your customer calls you, not the factory in China. The one-year power supply warranty is worthless if you installed the sign 200 miles away and have to roll a truck. A quality Mean Well or equivalent costs $8 more per letter. Pay it.
Why Aochuang Sign, and not the guy with the Gmail address
We've been at this since 2010. worldwide, 50+ full-time workers, and a laser cutter that holds ±0.1mm tolerance. We TIG weld every stainless return. We grind and polish to a #4 or #8 finish that doesn't show weld marks. We run an 8-12 hour aging test on every lit sign before it goes into export packaging: foam, carton, plywood crate. If a sign arrives damaged, it's the freight company's fault, but I'll still resend the broken piece free. That's not in a contract. It's just how we've stayed alive for 15 years.
Look, I've burned my hands on hot acrylic. I've argued with LED suppliers about chip binning. I know the difference between a sign that lasts 6 months and one that lasts 8 years. Most factory owners in China sit in an office and never touch the product. I do.
So send me your specs. I'll send you a real quote, not a teaser price. If you want to verify our factory, I'll do a live video walk-through on WeChat or WhatsApp. If you want to order one test letter before committing to 50, our MOQ is 1 piece. I'd rather earn your trust with one letter than lose it with a container load of junk.
That's the whole pitch. No fluff. No "solutions provider" nonsense. Just a factory that makes signs, ships them honestly, and tells you the truth when you're about to make a mistake.
Get your quote. Then go compare. I'll be here.
