
A hotel in Ohio just called me, panicking. Their inspector failed every room plaque. They’d ordered beautiful brushed aluminum with raised text — no Braille. The contractor assumed “tactile” meant raised letters and called it good. It cost them $4,200 in rework and a two-week delay. Don’t let that be you.
ADA signs are not regular custom signs with a fancy title. They’re a tightly regulated construction product, like fire-rated doors or exit lights. If you’re a sign shop reselling them or a business owner buying direct, you need to know exactly what triggers compliance before a single piece gets mounted on drywall.
Here’s what the law says, plain English: any permanent room or space in a commercial building that serves a function — restrooms, conference rooms, electrical closets, stairwells — must have a sign identifying it with both tactile text and Grade 2 Braille. Exits, directional signs, and informational signs typically don’t need tactile features unless they’re identifying a permanent room. Yes, it’s that specific. Miss it, and you’ll fail inspection.
Look, I’ve sat through 16-hour CEU courses. I’ve also field-measured a thousand failed signs. Here’s the spec sheet that matters, straight from the 2010 ADA Standards, with the stuff inspectors actually check:
Tactile text must be raised 1/32 inch (0.8 mm) minimum from the background. Characters need a sans-serif or simple serif font, uppercase, between 5/8 inch and 2 inches in height. The finish absolutely cannot be glossy — 11 degrees or less on a 60-degree gloss meter. That non-glare rule trips up half the Chinese-imported signs I see. People spec a beautiful brushed stainless and forget the clear coat pushes gloss to 30 degrees. Instant fail.
Braille must be Grade 2 (contracted), domed, placed 3/8 to 1/2 inch below the tactile text. Dot diameter 0.059 to 0.063 inches, dot height 0.025 to 0.037 inches. I’ve seen shops buy cheap acrylic signs with flat-bottom Braille dots. They’re completely unreadable to a blind person. The inspector will reject them in ten seconds.
Mounting height: the centerline of the tactile characters must sit between 48 inches minimum and 60 inches maximum above the finished floor. For a sign with multiple lines of text, you measure from the centerline of the entire text block. We cut a rigid jig in the shop and check every single sign before crating. That’s not overkill; that’s keeping you off the phone with an angry GC.
The ugly truth is this: slapping “ADA compliant” on a product page means nothing unless the shop stands behind every dimension with a QC report. I’ve seen importers sell polycarbonate signs with Braille that smears after one cleaning. I’ve seen US-based sign makers laser-etch tactile text to a depth of 0.5 mm and call it compliant. It’s not. The standard requires 0.8 mm minimum. That’s 60% more relief. When we laser-cut stainless for our stainless steel letters, we’re holding ±0.1 mm. Tactile signs are easier. But you still need to spec the depth explicitly.
Here’s what nobody tells you: the most common fail point in ADA inspection isn’t Braille or height. It’s contrast. The background and characters must have a light-on-dark or dark-on-light contrast without relying on color alone. A dark bronze letter on a medium bronze plate can look beautiful, and a sighted inspector might nod. Then a disability advocate shows up with a light meter, and you’re ripping out 200 signs. We only ship tactile signs in two-tone schemes — white on black, black on white, or engraved with paint-filled lettering. No exceptions. If a customer asks for a tone-on-tone uncoated stainless look, I refuse. I’ve lost $3,200 worth of orders refusing it. I sleep fine.
A contractor in Phoenix ordered 340 ADA room signs from a factory in Guangdong. They arrived beautifully, but the Braille was installed using adhesive domes instead of integrally formed dots. Six months later, the domes started falling off in the summer heat. The building owner sued. That factory didn’t offer a warranty on ADA signs because they knew the glue would fail. We embed Braille directly into the substrate — either by CNC milling acrylic and filling with resin, or by chemical etching/photopolymer on stainless. The adhesive shortcut saves $2 a sign. It’s not worth it.
If you’re importing, demand a sample with a Braille pin test. We ship free samples to qualified buyers, and I tell them to rub the Braille hard with a key for 30 seconds. If a dot loosens, don’t buy. Our dots survive that test because they’re part of the sign, not an add-on. That’s the difference between a factory that owns a CNC and a trading company that owns a WeChat account.

But the final determination of ADA compliance happens on-site, during inspection. You, the buyer, are responsible for ensuring the signs meet the referenced code edition in your jurisdiction. Anyone who tells you “our signs are guaranteed to pass” is either a licensed US fabricator with local pull or a liar. We’re neither. We’re the honest factory that delivers what you spec.

I always ask you to confirm the applicable standard before I strike an arc.
A single 6" x 9" ADA room identification sign in brushed stainless with Grade 2 Braille, non-glare paint fill, and adhesive mounting tape runs about $8 to $15 ex-works at our factory, depending on quantity. Add $1.50 per sign for a custom logo or floor number. Compare that to US retail where the same sign goes for $35 to $75. We’re not underselling your local shop out of spite. For a 200-key hotel, the full door sign package (room numbers, restrooms, mechanical rooms, floor directories) might set you back $2,800 from us, packed in plywood crates with foam. Freight depends: air freight for 200 signs runs $4 to $6 per kg, sea freight maybe $120 for half a pallet LCL. Add the 30% Section 301 tariff if you’re in the US. You’re still at half of what you’d pay domestically. But you need to budget for a local inspector’s courtesy review if your GC is nervous. That’s $300 well spent.
If you’re reselling, the margin is fat. If you’re the end buyer, the savings pay for the rest of your signage package — maybe those acrylic light boxes for the lobby directory or the back-lit halo letters on the exterior.
Look, I’ve been doing this since 1997. I’ve shipped ADA signs that ended up in veterans’ hospitals, law offices, and Hampton Inns. I’ve also talked people OUT of ordering from me. If your project is 12 rooms in a strip mall, don’t import. Lead times and freight make it pointless. You’ll pay more in shipping than the signs are worth. Go to a local quick-sign shop, pay $40 a sign, and move on.
But if you’re placing 50 or more tactile signs, importing is a no-brainer — provided you do two things: get a physical sample first, and double-check the spec sheet against your local code edition. Here’s what nobody tells you about maintenance: ADA signs last forever if you don’t clean them with ammonia or abrasive pads. A wipe with mild soap and water, nothing else. The non-glare finish scratches if you look at it wrong. And for the love of all that’s holy, don’t let the janitorial staff use Magic Erasers. I’ve seen 200-room files ruined in one weekend.
