UV-resistant acrylic from Mitsubishi or Degussa lasts 5-8 years before yellowing. Domestic acrylic starts yellowing in 1-2 years. 304 stainless has a 10+ year outdoor life. 316 stainless does 15+ in marine air. Quality LED modules from Samsung, Osram, or Lan Jing L70 at 50,000 hours. Cheap modules? 12-18 months.

Look, you don't need a technician for monthly checks. You need eyes and a bucket of water.
Wipe the sign face with a soft cloth and pH-neutral cleaner. Don't use ammonia-based glass cleaner. It etches acrylic over time. Inspect the silicone seams for cracks. Clear the drain holes on the bottom of channel letters. Spiders and dirt clog them, then water pools inside.
Check for flicker or dim sections. That's a failing module or loose connection. Don't wait. Replace the bad module before it overdraws the driver and kills the string.
Here's what nobody tells you: power supplies fail faster than LEDs. We warranty power supplies for 1 year. That doesn't mean they die at 13 months. It means heat kills capacitors, and nobody checks ventilation.
Four times a year, open the access panel. Do these checks.

The ugly truth is you can't see UV damage until it's too late. Acrylic turns yellow from the inside out. Stainless develops pinhole rust at welds first.
Once a year, touch every weld on stainless steel letters. If you feel pitting, clean it with a stainless passivation solution. Don't paint over it. That traps moisture and makes rust worse.
Check acrylic faces for hairline cracks. Reapply neutral silicone to any seam that looks dry. If the sign is within a mile of saltwater, wash it with fresh water every quarter. Salt eats 304 stainless like candy. For coastal installs, pay the 20-30% premium for 316.
Channel letters fail at the bottom seam. Water pools. Dirt clogs. The drain hole is your best friend.
Back-lit halo letters fail at the standoff mounts. The rear gap collects water and salt. Clean behind the letters every quarter. If the installer didn't use stainless hardware, replace it before it rusts and streaks the wall.
Halo letters run cooler because the LEDs are behind the face, not baking inside a sealed can. But they attract spiders. Spiders love warm LED gaps. Clean out webs before they block airflow.
Acrylic light boxes collect condensation. If you see fog inside the face, open the bottom gasket and let it breathe. Trapped moisture fogs diffusers and corrodes sockets.
Neon flex signs use PVC jackets. UV makes the jacket brittle in 3-5 years in southern exposure. Inspect for cracks. When the jacket cracks, water hits the LED strip and you get a dead segment.
Look, I know that sounds aggressive. But here's the math. A $30 driver kills a $600 sign. Replace it before it takes out the whole LED string.
