We're Aochuang Sign in Lu'an, Anhui, China. We started in 2010, run a 3,000m² production floor, and keep 50+ skilled workers on payroll. We export worldwide. I've been on a factory floor for 16 years, so I'm not going to sell you fairy tales.

We make front-lit channel letters, back-lit halo letters, and rimless channel letters. We sell them factory direct at $20 to $80 a letter depending on size and spec. Compare that to US retail installed prices of $200 to $700 per letter. That's real savings, usually 50-65% on product.

The ugly truth is we can't do everything. We don't install signs in your city, we don't pull permits, and we can't put a UL sticker on a finished custom sign at that price. We can build to NEC Article 600 electrical specs and use UL-listed components. If a Chinese factory promises you a full UL listing on a $40 acrylic letter, they're lying.

What Actually Drives Custom Acrylic Letter Pricing

Price per letter isn't a mystery. It's materials, labor, and LEDs. Size, depth, finish, and LED density all move the number. Most sign shops quote by square feet or letter height, but a 12-inch letter with dense LED modules costs more per inch than a 24-inch letter because the return bending and soldering time don't scale down.

Here's what nobody tells you: a small letter still needs a power connection, a return trim, and an hour of polishing. That's why our bulk price per letter drops when letter height goes over 18 inches. You're spreading the fixed labor over more material.

Acrylic face thickness matters. Common stock is 2mm, 3mm, and 5mm. For any letter face over 2.5 meters tall, we force 5mm+ acrylic. If a factory quotes you 3mm on a 3-meter letter, walk away. It'll bow in the wind like a cheap umbrella.

Return depth changes the look. Standard channel letter returns are 30mm to 80mm deep. Back-lit halo letters need a 30mm to 50mm return for the glow to bounce off the wall. Front-lit letters with deeper returns give you more LED distance and less hot spotting. But deeper returns cost more aluminum or stainless steel. Simple.

Acrylic Quality: The Yellowing Problem No One Mentions

Domestic acrylic costs half as much as UV-resistant Mitsubishi or Degussa acrylic. It also starts yellowing in 1-2 years outdoors. I've seen it happen on a Florida storefront, and the client blamed the sign maker, not the material.

Our standard outdoor acrylic has 90-92% light transmittance and is UV-resistant. With quality Mitsubishi or Degussa sheet, you get 5-8 years before noticeable yellowing. If you're ordering for a covered entry or indoor lobby, domestic acrylic may be fine, and we'll quote it if you ask. But I won't default to it for outdoor jobs. That's not how you keep a 21-country export business.

Thickness is tied to wind load. Use 2mm for small letters under 300mm, 3mm for medium letters, and 5mm for anything over 2.5m or in a hurricane zone. If you order 200 letters for a coast, I'll ask about your local wind code before quoting.

LED Modules: The Part That Dies First

Cheap LED modules last 12-18 months. Quality modules from Samsung, Osram, or Blueview last 5+ years real world. We use quality modules because warranty claims kill factories faster than bad reviews.

SMD 2835 is the industry standard for channel letters, pushing 100-150 lm/W. SMD 5730 is brighter at 40-60 lm per chip for deep or high-contrast faces. If you want RGB, SMD 5050 handles color. But RGB in an outdoor acrylic letter is a maintenance headache—moisture gets in and one dead diode makes the whole channel look off.

Color temperature changes the product. 3000-3500K warm white suits hospitality and restaurants. 4000-5000K neutral white is right for corporate and retail. 6000-6500K cool white reads
