Stop Comparing Only the Price Per Letter
Look, I've lost count of the quotes I've seen from US sign shops. They'll quote $600 for a 24-inch
front-lit channel letter. Same 304 stainless trim, same SMD 2835 LEDs, same acrylic face. We ship that letter for $80 factory direct. But don't start celebrating yet. The factory price isn't the whole story.
Here's what nobody tells you: US retail installed price includes local code compliance, a bucket truck, a licensed electrician, and a warranty call two years later. Factory direct means you take those jobs on yourself. If you're a sign shop or contractor, that's opportunity. If you're a business owner expecting turnkey, it's a headache.
The ugly truth is many importers order from a factory we've never heard of, get a sign with domestic acrylic that yellows in 18 months, and then tell everyone "China signs are garbage." They're not garbage. They were built to a garbage spec. That's a sourcing mistake, not a manufacturing one.
What Aochuang Sign Can and Cannot Do
I'm not here to sell you a lie. Our factory is 3,000 square meters in Lu'an, Anhui, with 50+ skilled workers. We export worldwide. We hold CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001. MOQ is one piece. Lead time is about 5-15 days. Those are facts.
We can build
back-lit halo letters that look better than what most local shops fabricate. We can do
stainless steel letters in 304 or 316, brushed, mirror, PVD, or powder coated. We can do acrylic light boxes, neon flex, aluminum letters, cast metal, rimless channel letters, dual-lit channel letters. Name it.
I've seen this go wrong: a customer asked us to match a competitor's $22 price on an 18-inch aluminum letter. We said no. Here's why. That price means 0.5mm aluminum, no internal stiffener, and a cheap clear coat. Our aluminum letters use 1.0-1.6mm sheet and are naturally rust-proof with anodized or powder coated finish. We could build that cheap version. We won't.
We cannot do UL 48 listed signs for you. Here's what nobody tells you: UL 48 certification costs $4,000-$15,000 and takes 4-9 months, with quarterly audits. Most factories claim they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today's date. If they can't show it, they're selling markings. We can build to UL 48 standards, but we don't hold the listing. For many US projects, ETL is an accepted alternative and 10-30% cheaper. If you need a listed sign, you handle that locally with our drawings and components.
We also don't install. We don't pull permits. We don't file your city variance. Factory direct means product only, unless you arrange freight forwarding that includes white-glove delivery. Don't ask us to call your landlord.
The Actual Ordering Process: 10 Steps
Look, most people think ordering custom signs factory direct is like ordering a pizza. It's not. But it's close.
Here's the whole flow, start to finish:
- Design confirmation (1 day). You send vector files — AI, EPS, PDF, or DXF. Not a JPEG. Not a photo of a napkin. We redline and confirm dimensions, materials, finishes, and LED placement.
- Laser cutting (1-2 days). We cut metal faces, returns, and backplates to ±0.1mm. That's tighter than most local shops.
- Bending and welding (1-2 days). TIG welding for clean seams. Not some MIG spatter mess.
- Grinding and polishing (1-2 days). Every weld seam gets ground flat and polished. On mirror #8 finish, that's where cheap factories fall apart.
- Acrylic face CNC (1 day). We use Mitsubishi or Degussa UV-resistant acrylic for 5-8 years outdoor life. Cheaper domestic acrylic yellowing starts in 1-2 years. You choose.
- LED assembly (1-2 days). SMD 2835 modules, 100-150 lm/W, L70 ≥50,000 hours. We can use Samsung or Osram or Blueview modules on request. Cheap modules die in 12-18 months. We test every module before installation.
- Sealing with neutral silicone (1 day). Proper neutral cure silicone so it doesn't eat the acrylic or corrode the metal.
- 8-12 hour aging test. Every sign burns in before it leaves the floor. That catches dead LEDs and bad power supplies before they reach your dock.
- 100% QC inspection. One piece or a hundred pieces, every sign gets inspected for scratches, gaps, and light bleed.
- Export packaging. Foam, carton, then plywood crate. If it survives a forklift in Long Beach, it survives your installer.
That's about 5-15 days total. If you need it faster, we can sometimes push to 5 days on simple jobs, but don't expect that during Chinese New Year.
Materials and Pricing: No Surprises
Here's what nobody tells you: factory prices are not secret. We publish them.
A front-lit channel letter runs $20-80 factory direct, depending on size and material. Back-lit halo letters run $35-120. Stainless steel non-lit letters $15-40. 3D fabricated letters $40-120. Aluminum letters $10-25. Acrylic light boxes $80-250 per square meter. Neon flex signs $30-200 per sign.
Compare that to US retail installed: $200-700 per letter for front-lit, $400-1,000 for halo. Factory-direct savings are 50-65% on product. That's real money.
