This guide isn't for me. It's for you – a business owner who needs a sign that works, lasts, and doesn't empty your wallet.
The ugly truth is that most buying guides are written by guys who've never packed a crate. They tell you "compare quotes" and "check reviews." I'm telling you what actually matters: material thickness, LED driver brand, sealant type, and whether your crate will survive a forklift. Let's get into it.
Factory-Direct vs. Local: The 65% Reality Check
I've watched sign shops pay $800 for a front-lit letter from a domestic fabricator. Same 304 stainless, same Samsung LEDs. We ship that letter for $120. Factory-direct isn't a gimmick – it's the difference between paying for a middleman and paying for the steel and light.

That's a 50-65% markup for design, permits, and a ladder. Some of that is legit. But if you're buying 10 letters and you can get them factory-direct, you save thousands.
Here's what nobody tells you: shipping adds 5-15% depending on volume. Express (7-15 days) costs $30-100 for small orders. Sea freight (50-70 days) drops to $80-200 per cubic meter. Unless you're in a hurry, go sea. LCL crates get handled 6-8 times between our dock and yours. That's not in the brochure. Every touch is a chance for damage. I've seen crates dropped, split, soaked. Pack it right – foam, carton, plywood crate – and you'll be fine. We do it. Many factories half-ass it.
Stainless Steel: 304 vs. 316 – Don't Guess
Stainless is the workhorse. I spec
stainless steel letters for 80% of outdoor jobs. But here's the choice: 304 or 316.
304 has 18% chromium, 8% nickel. It lasts 10+ years inland. Drops to 5-7 years near saltwater. 316 has 2-3% molybdenum added. That moly is the difference between a sign that rusts in 3 years and one that lasts 15. The cost premium is 20-30%. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach, pay for 316 or you're replacing letters in 3 years. I've seen it happen. Twice.
Finishes matter too. Brushed #4 hides scratches. Mirror #8 looks premium but shows every fingerprint. PVD coating adds a color layer – black, bronze, gold – and is tougher than paint. Powder coating is cheaper but chips. Match the finish to the location. If your sign gets kicked by delivery trucks, don't put mirror polish on it.
LEDs: The 18-Month Lie vs. 5-Year Truth
Quickest way to spot bad LED modules: look at the solder joints. Dull gray = won't last 18 months. Shiny silver = proper lead-free solder. Quality modules (Samsung, Osram, or good Chinese brands like Blueview) hit L70 at 50,000 hours. That's 5.7 years of continuous use. Cheap modules? 12-18 months and you're swapping letters at your own cost.
The industry standard is SMD 2835: 100-150 lumens per watt. That's enough for most channel letters. SMD 5730 is brighter – 40-60 lumens per chip – but runs hotter. Use it only for large, tall letters where you need punch. SMD 5050 is for RGB. Color-changing is cool, but I tell clients: stick with a single color temperature unless you need dynamic effects. More parts, more failure points.
Color temp matters. 3000-3500K warm for restaurants and hospitality. 4000-5000K neutral for retail and offices. 6000-6500K cool for industrial and highway. Don't let a salesman talk you into "daylight" for your coffee shop. Warm is welcoming. Cool is cheap-looking.
Certifications: What's Real, What's Fake
I've seen factories stamp "CE" on a box without ever paying for the test. CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB. Most factories will say they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today's date. Watch them sweat.
For the US market, UL 48 is the gold standard. It costs $4,000-15,000 and takes 4-9 months. ETL is a cheaper alternative – 10-30% less – and is accepted by most inspectors. IP65 is minimum for outdoor. IP65 means dust-tight and water jets from any direction. It does NOT mean your sign survives a Florida hurricane. For coastal areas, spec IP66 or IP68.

Materials: Acrylic Thickness and Yellowing
A 3mm acrylic face cuts 92% light transmittance. A 2mm face cuts 90%. Your customer won't notice the 2% difference but they will notice the 40% cost bump. For standard letters under 2.5m, 3mm is fine. Over 2.5m, bump to 5mm to prevent sagging.
Yellowing is the real killer. Domestic acrylic (Mitsubishi or Degussa) lasts 5-8 years before yellowing. Cheap domestic stuff? 1-2 years. If you're paying factory-direct, you can request the good stuff. It adds 10-15% to material cost. Worth every penny when your sign still looks white in year four.
Aluminum is another option. Weight is 1/3 of steel, outdoor life 8-12 years. It's naturally rust-proof. Anodized or powder-coated finishes hold up well. Aluminum letters are cheaper than stainless – $10-25 per letter – but they dent easier. For interior, fine. For exterior, use 1.6mm minimum thickness.
Pricing Breakdown: What You Should Pay
Here's what nobody tells you: factory prices are negotiable in volume. But for single signs, here's the range:
- Front-lit channel letters: $20-80 per letter
- Back-lit halo: $35-120 per letter
- Stainless steel non-lit: $15-40 per letter
- Aluminum letters: $10-25 per letter
- Lightboxes: $80-250 per square meter
- LED neon flex: $30-200 per sign
Add shipping (express $30-100, air $4-12/kg, sea $80-200/m³) plus tariffs. US Section 301 adds about 30% on Chinese-manufactured signs. Factor that into your budget. Don't let a factory quote you a price and then surprise you with tariffs. Clarify upfront: "Is this EXW or DDP?" EXW means you handle everything. DDP means they pay customs and taxes. I recommend DDP for first-time buyers.
Pro Tips for a Smooth Order
1. Send a clean vector file (AI, PDF, DXF). We laser cut from your design. Blurry JPEGs cause delays.
2. Specify material grades. Don't say "stainless steel." Say "304 brushed #4, 1.5mm."
3. Ask for a production photo before shipping. We send them at Aochuang. Many factories won't.
4. Order a sample letter if you're spending over $1,000. Pay for shipping. It saves returns.
5. Warranty: We offer 2 years on LEDs, 1 year on power supply. If a factory offers 5 years on everything, they're lying. No LED module lasts 5 years in direct sun without degradation.
FAQ – Stuff I Can't Believe I Still Have to Explain
Q: Can I wire the sign myself?
A: No. Hire a licensed electrician. NEC Article 600 requires proper grounding and disconnect. I've seen three fires from DIY sign wiring. Don't be the fourth.
Q: Is 2mm acrylic good enough for outdoor?
A: For small letters under 50cm, maybe. For anything bigger, 3mm minimum. 2mm will warp in summer heat. I've replaced dozens of 2mm faces that looked like potato chips.
Q: What's the difference between IP65 and IP66?
A: IP65 handles rain from any direction. IP66 handles powerful jets – like a pressure washer. If your sign faces coastal wind-driven rain, get IP66. IP65 is fine for a covered awning.
Q: How long does a custom sign take from China?
A: Production is 7-15 days. Shipping depends: express 7-15 days, air 10-20, sea 50-70. Total: 14-85 days. Plan ahead. Don't call me three days before your grand opening expecting a miracle.
