Custom Sign Buying Guide: How to Import Factory-Direct from China Without Getting Burned

Material Choices: Acrylic, Stainless, Aluminum, and More

The material you pick matters more than most people think. Here is how the common ones actually hold up.

Acrylic is popular because it lets through 90-92% of light and holds up to UV for 5-8 years outdoors. We usually use 2mm to 3mm sheet. If the sign face is over 2.5m, go to 5mm or thicker so it does not flex or crack. Stainless steel gives you a 10+ year outdoor life, with brushed #4 and mirror #8 as our standard finishes. For coastal or corrosive locations, stainless 316 is marine grade and holds up for 15+ years, but it runs about 20-30% more than 304. Aluminum letters are light, rust-proof, and last 8-12 years outdoors. Anodized and powder-coated finishes handle modern designs well.

LEDs are the heart of most electric signs. SMD 2835 modules at 100-150 lm/W are our standard. Use good LED modules from brands like Samsung or Osram if you want a 5+ year lifespan. Color temperature matters too: warm 3000-3500K suits hospitality, neutral 4000-5000K suits corporate and retail, and cool 6000-6500K works for industrial or highway jobs.

One thing I tell buyers: do not choose by looks alone. The cheapest material often costs more to replace later. Ask for samples and certifications before you commit.

Price Differences: Factory vs. Retail, and the Real Cost Breakdown

Factory pricing is usually much lower than US retail. Retailers have rent, staff, advertising, and inventory costs. Factories run leaner and sell closer to production cost.

For example, front-lit channel letters typically retail for $200-700 per letter in the US, while our factory price is $20-80 per letter. Light boxes from the factory run $80-250 per square meter.

Shipping cost depends on how fast you need the order. Express is 7-15 days and costs $30-100 for small packages. Air freight takes 10-20 days and runs about $4-12 per kilogram. Sea freight is the cheapest at 50-70 days, with LCL at $80-200 per cubic meter and FCL at $1,200-3,000.

Then there are tariffs. Section 301 duties still apply to many sign products. Check the current rate for your product before you finalize your budget.

Production Timeframes: Lead Times for Custom Signs from China

Production takes 7-15 days after you approve the design. That covers cutting, assembly, wiring, testing, and export packing.

Our process has 10 steps: design confirmation, laser cutting to ±0.1mm, bending and welding, grinding and polishing, CNC cutting the acrylic face, LED assembly, sealing with neutral silicone, aging test, and 100% QC inspection.

Those times assume standard materials and normal order sizes. Complex designs or large quantities can add a few days.

Plan ahead. Rush orders usually cost more or force shortcuts.

Certifications: What They Mean and Why They Matter

Certifications are not paperwork. At Aochuang Sign, we hold CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001. CE means the sign meets European safety and environmental rules. RoHS limits harmful substances. ISO 9001 is about repeatable quality management. Some factories skip these to cut cost. Do not accept that. A sign without CE can fail an inspection in Europe and cost you more than you saved. Always ask for certificates and verify them. Your brand is on the sign.

Shipping Options and Tariffs

Shipping from China to the US comes down to three methods. Express is fastest and most expensive. Air freight is cheaper than express and takes about 10-20 days. Sea freight is the cheapest but takes 50-70 days. Section 301 duties may apply to your product, so include that in your landed cost. Shipping times can vary, so allow some buffer.

Quality Control and Inspections: Ensuring Your Sign Arrives as Promised

Quality control is what separates a sign that lasts from one that fails. At Aochuang Sign, we follow a 10-step process from design confirmation to export packing, with a 100% QC inspection before anything leaves the floor. Production takes 7-15 days. LED signs and power supplies carry a 3-year warranty.

We run every sign through an 8-12 hour aging test before packing. That catches bad solder joints, weak seals, and early LED failures. CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001 back up the process.

When the crate arrives, inspect it before installation. Check for visible damage and take photos. If something is wrong, contact the factory right away. A good supplier will work with you to fix it or replace parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to receive my sign after ordering?

Production is 7-15 days after design approval. Transit time depends on whether you pick express, air, or sea freight.

What if my sign arrives damaged?

Contact the factory right away. We will ask for photos and then either send replacement parts or sort out a refund.

Do I need to pay for certifications like UL or CE?

Yes, these are not built into the sign price. UL 48 certification runs $4,000-15,000 depending on the product. CE usually costs a few thousand dollars. Ask for a line-item quote so there are no surprises.

Can I customize my sign design?

Yes. Most of what we make is custom. Send drawings or dimensions, and we will produce to your specs.
