MOQ 1 Piece: The Factory Secret Nobody Tells You
Here's what nobody tells you: minimum order quantities exist to protect the factory, not because machinery demands it. A channel letter bends the same way for one unit or five hundred.
Most of my competitors quote MOQs of 20, 50, or 100 because they don't want to reset production for small fish. That's their problem, not yours.

Our laser cutter loads a file the same way whether it's cutting a single letter or a storefront full. Our TIG welders don't charge overtime for one unit.
The ugly truth is many "MOQ 1" factories are lying. They'll take your order, then batch it with another customer's job and hope nobody notices. We don't. When you order one piece from us, you get your own production run, your own QC check, your own packing slip. Because you're not just ordering a sign — you're ordering proof of whether you can trust us.
Why We Take Your One-Piece Order
You're a sign shop in Ohio. A delivery truck clipped a client's letter. The original manufacturer won't sell a replacement — they want the whole reorder. That's when you call us.
One piece is thin profit for us. But here's what impatience blinds importers to: a serious sample order is worth a hundred emails from tire-kickers. It tells us you have a client on the hook. It tells us you'll likely return with a 30-letter job if we nail this one.
So yes, we'll build your single sample letter — right if you send good files, wrong if you send garbage, and we'll tell you which one you sent.
The process doesn't change with quantity: design confirmation (1 day), laser cutting to ±0.1mm (1-2 days), bending and TIG welding (1-2 days), grinding and polishing (1-2 days), acrylic face CNC routing (1 day), LED assembly (1-2 days), sealing with neutral silicone (1 day), an 8-12 hour aging test, then 100% inspection. Seven to fifteen days total.
How to Order a Sample: Step by Step
First, send your vector file. AI, PDF, CDR, or DWG — all accepted. No vector file? Send a photo plus dimensions. We've rebuilt logos from crumpled business cards and a screenshot someone took of their phone. Not ideal, but workable.
Second, specify material. This is where most buyers trip. Saying "make me a sign" without specifying 304 vs 316 is like ordering a steak without saying how you want it cooked. 316 costs 20-30% more and carries 2-3% molybdenum for salt resistance. Coastal job? Pay for 316. Strip mall in Phoenix? 304 will outlast three tenants.
Third, choose your lighting. SMD 2833 modules — correction, SMD 2835 — deliver 100-150 lumens per watt and that's the industry standard. SMD 5730 pumps 40-60 lumens per chip for oversized letters. Color temperature: 3000-3500K for hospitality, 4000-5000K for corporate and retail, 6000-6500K for industrial and highway.
Here's what nobody tells you: put everything in writing. We'll send a digital proof back. When you approve it, we cut steel. Nothing moves before that approval.
What We Can and Can't Do With a Sample Order
We can fabricate a single
stainless steel letter in 304 or 316, with brushed #4 or mirror #8 finish. Add PVD or powder coating. Make it non-lit, front-lit,
halo-lit from the back, or dual-lit for day and night visibility. We can CNC-rout 3mm acrylic faces that hold up 5-8 years when we use Mitsubishi or Degussa sheet — and we'll tell you up front if you're gambling on cheaper domestic acrylic that yellows in 12-24 months. We won't quietly swap materials to win your bid.
I've seen this go wrong: a reseller orders a beautiful sample, then places a 100-piece order and asks us to swap Samsung LEDs for no-name modules "to protect their margin." Six months later they're on the phone screaming about dead sections. Cheap LEDs die in 12-18 months. Quality SMD 2835 modules run 50,000+ hours to L70. That's not just a spec — that's the difference between a five-year customer and a one-time refund.
What we can't do: we can't fabricate a fully custom sign in a day. We can't produce during China's Lunar New Year shutdown. And we can't get you a UL-listed sign in two weeks — UL 48 costs $4,000-15,000, takes 4-9 months, and includes quarterly factory audits. If your project demands UL, start the conversation immediately, not when the permit office calls.
Pricing: What a Sample Actually Costs
Straight from the factory floor:
front-lit channel letters run $20-80 per letter. Back-lit halo runs $35-120. Stainless non-lit runs $15-40. 3D fabricated letters run $40-120. Aluminum letters run $10-25.
Acrylic light boxes run $80-250 per square meter.
Neon flex signs run $30-200.
Compare that to US retail installed: $200-700 per letter for front-lit, $400-1,000 for halo-lit. Do the math — that's a 50-65% factory-direct saving before your installation markup.
Your single-piece sample will cost more per unit than a bulk run. That's honest. Setup, programming, and QC get spread across one letter instead of fifty. But we don't inflate the sample price to punish you for small orders. We price it fairly because we want your next order. What we don't do is free samples. Anyone offering free custom-fabricated samples is either burying the cost elsewhere or shipping you seconds.
Shipping, Tariffs, and the Costs Everyone Forgets
Express shipping (DHL, FedEx, UPS) runs 7-15 days and $30-100 for small sample packages. Air freight takes 10-20 days at $4-12 per kilogram. Sea freight takes 50-70 days at $80-200 per cubic meter for LCL, or $1,200-3,000 for a full container. For a single sample letter, express is the only sensible path.
Now the part that shocks newcomers: US Section 301 tariffs add roughly 30% on top of product cost for signs imported from China. That's not our markup, it's the taxman. Budget for it before you quote your client, not after.
The ugly truth is that some US "custom sign manufacturers" are really importers buying from factories like ours and tripling the price. You can cut them out and keep the margin. Or keep paying reseller prices — your call.
Certifications: What Actually Matters
US electrical work falls under NEC Article 600. For the sign itself, UL 48 is the certification inspectors know and trust. It costs $4,000-15,000, takes 4-9 months, and requires quarterly audits — which is exactly why you want to verify a factory's UL status before promising it to a client. ETL is a legitimate alternative running 10-30% cheaper.
CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks. Half the factories in China claim it. Ask to see the certificate. Look at the date. If it expired, it's worthless. If they can't produce it, walk away.
Outdoor signage: IP65 is the minimum — dust-tight and water jets from any direction. IP66 handles powerful jets, which we recommend for coastal exposure. IP68 is submersible and frankly overkill for any sign that isn't planning for a flood. And if you're doing interior ADA signage, remember: 48-60" mounting height, non-glare finish, Grade 2 Braille.
Brutal Honesty: What We Won't Promise
We won't promise domestic acrylic will last like Mitsubishi. It won't. Five to eight years for the good sheet, one to two years before yellowing for the cheap alternative. We'll quote both and let you decide where your client's priorities sit.
We won't tell you IP65 means hurricane-proof. It means jets of water — not Category 4 wind loads. Structural mounting and wind engineering are your job as the installer.
And we won't pretend the 2-year LED warranty covers everything. It covers LED modules. The power supply carries 1 year. That's standard across the industry. Anyone promising five years on cheap modules is either lying or building the projected failures into their quote — and you'll pay for it twice.
How to Screw Up Your Sample Order
I've seen this go wrong a hundred times: buyer sends a logo as a JPEG, skips the material spec, asks for "white LEDs" without a color temperature, then blames us when their sign clashed with the building. We're good, but we're not mind readers.
Send us: vector file, dimensions in millimeters, material grade, LED type, color temperature, mounting method, and the city where it'll be installed so we know the climate. Unsure about any of it? Ask. Our design team has walked hundreds of first-time importers through this.
The full production sequence: design confirmation (1 day) → laser cutting (1-2 days) → bending and TIG welding (1-2 days) → grinding and polishing (1-2 days) → acrylic CNC (1 day) → LED assembly (1-2 days) → sealing with neutral silicone (1 day) → 8-12 hour aging test → 100% QC → export packaging in foam, carton, and plywood crate. That's your 7-15 day lead time. The packaging alone has saved more shipments from freight gorillas than any other step.
The Bottom Line for Buyers Comparing Factories
You've got three quotes on your desk. One domestic shop at $400 per letter. Two Chinese factories at $75 and $110. Why the gap?
The $75 quote uses domestic acrylic, unbranded LEDs, and thinner stainless. The $110 quote is probably a trading company — no factory of their own, so you're paying a middleman's margin on top of someone else's production. Our quote sits in the middle because we use quality components, choose the right material for your climate, and don't run a pyramid.
