I've run a sign factory in Lu'an, Anhui since 2010. 3,000 square meters, 50+ workers, exports worldwide. And I'm tired of buyers getting burned by fake "MOQ 1" promises. So let's set the record straight.
MOQ 1 piece is real. But it doesn't mean one letter. It means one job. If you're a sign shop owner and you need one set of front-lit channel letters for a client, that's one piece. If you need a single acrylic light box for a lobby, that's one piece. We build it, test it, ship it. No minimum qty to hide behind.
Look, I've been at this trade long enough to know what "MOQ 1" usually means in China: it means "we'll take your money, then hit you with a $200 setup fee." That's not how we operate. Send us a vector file, get a quote, pay a deposit, and we start cutting. You don't need a lawyer, a translator, or a middleman.
The process is the same whether you're ordering one sample or a hundred units. Here's what happens after you contact us.
First, design confirmation. This takes about a day. You send artwork as AI, PDF, CDR, or DWG. If you don't have a vector file, we'll redraw it for you. That's not free. Don't send a jpeg screenshot and expect us to trace it perfectly. We'll do it, but you're paying for the time.
Then we quote and send a visual mockup. For a standard set of channel letters, front-lit runs $20-80 per letter, back-lit halo letters run $35-120, stainless steel non-lit runs $15-40. That's the factory price, not US retail. Your local shop will charge $200-700 per front-lit letter installed. We've seen it. You'll save 50-65% on the product itself.
After you approve the mockup, we take 100% sample payment. On samples, we don't do credit terms. Neither should you trust someone who does. Sample costs range from $80 to $400 depending on size and material. That includes the build, an 8-12 hour aging test on the LEDs, 100% QC, and export packaging.
Here's what nobody tells you: sample fees are supposed to cover real costs. Material, machine time, laser cutting, TIG welding, acrylic CNC routing, LED assembly, neutral silicone sealing, testing. Those DIY videos show a guy with a CNC router in a shoebox shop. We're not that. That's why our samples have a price.
I've seen this go wrong: a buyer sends a low-res logo and says "just make it look nice." We make it. They complain the "O" looks like a "Q". You don't want that. You want a proof, and you want to approve it. That's not bureaucracy — that's the difference between a sign and a headache.
We can't do same-day shipping. Lead time is 7-15 days, full stop. Cutting, bending, welding, grinding, polishing, LED placement, sealing, aging test, inspection, packaging. That sequence doesn't compress just because you're screaming about your grand opening.
We can't make a 5mm acrylic face glow evenly if the LED spacing is wrong. So we don't do it. If your design needs a double-sided sign, a curved raceway, or a custom font, tell us before we cut, not after.
And we can't turn a napkin sketch into a production file without charging you. Our designers are not mind readers. That's what the design fee covers. It's not punishment — it's the difference between a sign that works and a sign that leaks on day one.
The ugly truth is you get what you specify, not what you hope for. Mitsubishi or Degussa acrylic gives you 90-92% light transmittance and holds up 5-8 years outdoors. Domestic acrylic starts yellowing in 1-2 years. We use both. If you ask for "cheap," that's what you'll get.
304 stainless has 18% chromium, 8% nickel, and a 10+ year outdoor life. 316 stainless adds 2-3% molybdenum and costs 20-30% more — that's for coastal air and industrial zones. For Miami Beach, pay for 316. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. If you order our stainless steel letters, tell us where they're going.
Aluminum is one-third the weight of steel, naturally rust-proof, and good for 8-12 years outdoors. For roof signs and pole signs, it's your best friend. Our aluminum letters won't corrode, won't rust, and won't make your installers curse you.
LED quality is where factories make their money. SMD 2835 runs 100-150 lumens per watt — that's the industry standard. SMD 5730 is the brightest single chip at 40-60 lumens per chip. Samsung or Osram modules last 5+ years. Cheap modules die in 12-18 months. We put Samsung and Lan Jing modules in our neon flex signs and halo-lit work because you're not going to replace them twice a year.
Certifications are a minefield. CE marking costs a factory 20,000-50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks. That's real. But most factories say they have CE, and a lot of them are lying through their teeth. Ask to see the certificate with today's date, not a scan from 2016.
For US work, UL 48 is the standard for signs. It costs $4,000-15,000 and takes 4-9 months. ETL is a legitimate alternative and usually runs 10-30% less. We carry CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001. And we'll tell you straight: we don't have UL 48 in-house. If your project needs it, we'll help you source a partner, or you spec ETL. Anyone who says "we have UL" after a 15-minute phone call is probably lying.
IP65 means dust-tight and protected from water jets. It is the minimum for outdoor signs. It does NOT mean your sign survives a Florida hurricane. IP66 handles powerful jets — use it for coastal. IP68 is submersible. We'll recommend based on where you're installing, but you have to tell us. We don't read minds.
For US electrical work, your installer has to follow NEC Article 600. That's on them, not us. For ADA-compliant signs, tactile letters need to be mounted 48-60 inches off the floor, with Grade 2 Braille and non-glare finishes. If you're supplying a public building, know those rules before you order. We can build to ADA specs, but you have to ask.
Shipping kills the dream if you don't plan. Express samples cost $30-100 and take 7-10 days. Air freight runs $4-12 per kilo and takes about 10 days. Sea freight is $80-200 per cubic meter LCL and takes about 65 days. A full container runs $1,200-3,000 depending on port.
And don't forget Section 301. The US hits signs with about 30% tariff at the border. That's not my tax; that's your customs broker's problem. We don't fake invoices. That's how people get their packages seized, and I'd rather lose a sale than watch you lose an entire shipment.
Every importer and contractor should screen factories the way they'd screen an employee. Here are the red flags I've seen buyers walk into for years.
There's nothing wrong with trading companies, by the way. Some of them are honest. But if you're buying direct from a factory, you want to see the factory. Our doors are open. We'll put a worker on the line with a torch and let you hear the damn thing.
I've watched sign shops pay $800 for a front-lit letter. Same 304 stainless, same Samsung LEDs. We ship that letter for $120. But the only way you'll believe that is to order a sample and tear it apart yourself.
Start with one piece. Measure the acrylic, check the weld seams, run the LEDs for a week, install it on a job and see what your customer says. That's how you build trust — not with a PDF brochure and a handshake over lunch.
