Local shops handle site surveys, wind load calcs, permit drawings, NEC Article 600, and the inspector who wants to see the label with his own eyes. That's real work. A Chinese factory can't stand next to a building and point at the wall.
Need one weird lobby sign that changes after a client walks the space? Local wins. Need someone to take the blame when the install goes sideways? Local wins too.
If your project has a hard deadline under 10 days, don't import. Pay the local guy.
The ugly truth is most local shops don't fabricate anything. They cut vinyl, they assemble, they buy channel letters or stainless steel letters from a regional wholesaler who imported them from China or Turkey.

Our materials: Mitsubishi or Degussa UV-resistant acrylic holds 90-92% light transmittance for 5-8 years. The cheap domestic sheet yellows in 1-2. Samsung, Osram, or Blueview LED modules run 5+ years real lifespan. Cheap no-name modules die in 12-18 months.
If you spec 304 stainless, you get 18% chromium and 8% nickel, 10+ years outdoor life. If you need marine grade, we tell you to pay 20-30% more for 316 with molybdenum. We don't upsell 316 for a strip mall in Ohio, and we don't let you put 304 on Miami Beach. That's the difference between a factory that knows signs and a guy who just wants your deposit.
I've seen this go wrong: a buyer paid for IP65 and thought it meant his sign would survive a Florida hurricane. It won't.
IP65 means dust-tight and protected from water jets. It does not mean impact, wind load, or storm surge. For coastal installs, ask for IP66 and 316 stainless. For extreme weather, IP68 is submersible, but it still doesn't turn a sign into a concrete wall.
Here's what nobody tells you about tariffs: US Section 301 on Chinese sign products is roughly 30%. That's not a hidden fee, it's a line item. It still usually works out cheaper than local fabrication, but you need to know it's coming.
Shipping times are real. Express gets small stuff to the US in 7-15 days for $30-100. Air freight runs 10-20 days at $4-12/kg. Sea freight takes 50-70 days but costs $80-200/m³ for LCL or $1,200-3,000 for a full container.
Order a single 6-inch letter express and you'll lose your savings. Order 10 channel letters sea freight and you'll smile all the way to the bank.
CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks. Most factories say they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today's date and the product name on it. If they send a five-year-old PDF for a different model, walk.
UL 48 costs $4,000-15,000, takes 4-9 months, and comes with quarterly audits. If a factory claims they can get you UL 48 in two weeks, they're not telling the truth. ETL is a legitimate alternative and runs 10-30% cheaper, but it still isn't instant.
