Custom Storefront Sign Cost: Real Budget Breakdown

Start With the Number Nobody Quotes

Look, I've watched sign shops pay $800 for a front-lit letter. Same 304 stainless, same Samsung LEDs. We ship that letter for $120.

That's not a sales pitch. It's the gap between factory-direct and retail installed. Your real budget depends on three things: what the sign is made of, how it ships, and whether you need someone local to hang it. Everything else is noise.

Here's what nobody tells you: a custom storefront sign isn't one price. It's a stack of costs. Product. Freight. Tariff. Permits. Installation. If you don't line them up, you'll be short by 30% before the crate opens.

Material Costs — Where Your Money Actually Goes

Acrylic face is 90-92% light transmittance if you buy right. UV-resistant Mitsubishi or Degussa lasts 5-8 years before yellowing. Domestic acrylic? 1-2 years. I've replaced faces that looked like a smoker's teeth after 18 months.

Stainless 304 runs 18% chromium, 8% nickel. Outdoor life 10+ years. Common thickness 1.0-3.0mm. Over 2.5m, use 5mm+ acrylic. I've seen fabricators use 2mm on a 3-meter letter, then wonder why it bows in July.

316 stainless contains 2-3% molybdenum. Marine grade. 15+ year outdoor life. For coastal or industrial, pay the 20-30% premium over 304. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach, pay for 316.

Aluminum weighs a third of steel. 8-12 year outdoor life. Naturally rust-proof. Thickness 1.0-1.6mm. Good for large letters where weight matters.

LEDs: SMD 2835 is the industry standard, 100-150 lm/W. Quality modules from Samsung, Osram, or Blueview last 5+ years real lifespan. Cheap no-name modules? 12-18 months. That's the ugly truth you won't see on a quote.

I've seen this go wrong: a restaurant owner in Houston ordered 24-inch letters with domestic acrylic because the quote was $8 cheaper per letter. Eighteen months later the faces looked like nicotine stains. He paid twice to replace the faces with UV-resistant acrylic. Don't let $8 blind you to a $2,000 redo.

Product Prices You Can Actually Budget On

Here are factory prices per letter. Not installed. Not shipped. Just the sign, built in Lu'an.

  • Front-lit channel letters: $20-80 per letter
  • Back-lit halo letters: $35-120 per letter
  • Stainless steel non-lit letters: $15-40 per letter
  • 3D fabricated letters: $40-120 per letter
  • Aluminum letters: $10-25 per letter
  • Acrylic light boxes: $80-250 per square meter
  • Neon flex signs: $30-200 per sign

US retail installed runs $200-700 per front-lit letter and $400-1,000 per halo-lit letter. Do the math: factory-direct product saves 50-65% on the product itself. But product is only part of the installed cost.
