For Miami Beach, pay for 316 marine grade — it has 2-3% molybdenum and costs 20-30% more. Any quote below $20 for a non-lit stainless letter means it's probably 0.8mm or "stainless-look" aluminum.
Acrylic face material is where cheap factories cheat. Mitsubishi or Degussa UV-resistant acrylic lasts 5-8 years before yellowing. Domestic acrylic lasts 1-2 years. If a quote doesn't name the acrylic brand, assume domestic. That's why our back-lit halo letters quotes always specify acrylic grade — we've had clients ask for cheap domestic on indoor signs, and we'll do it, but we write it on the invoice.
Aluminum letters are one-third the weight of steel, rust-proof, 8-12 year outdoor life. 1.0-1.6mm is standard. Finishes like anodized or powder coated. We sell aluminum letters at $10-25 apiece. Not as premium as stainless, but great for large logos.
The ugly truth is most channel letter quotes don't tell you which LED module they're putting inside. Cheap modules die in 12-18 months. Samsung, Osram, or Blueview modules last 5+ years real-world. SMD 2835 at 100-150 lm/W is the industry standard for front-lit. SMD 5050 for RGB. SMD 5730 for highest brightness at 40-60 lm/chip. L70 rating ≥50,000 hours matters. If your quote says "high-quality LED" without a brand, it's cheap.
We quote Samsung/Osram/Blueview by default. Our warranty is 2 years on LED, 1 year on power supply. That's not a lifetime warranty because outdoor heat and voltage spikes kill power supplies. Anyone offering 10 years on LED is lying or building in a replacement cost you're already paying.
The ugly truth is a $12 front-lit channel letter exists. It's 0.8mm aluminum, domestic acrylic, no-name LED, no aging test, and it'll fail in 12-18 months. I've seen importers buy containers of that and then eat warranty claims. We don't sell that. If your customer only cares about cheapest price, we're not your factory.
Here's what nobody tells you: CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks. We have CE and RoHS. Ask any factory for their certificate with today's date. If they send a blurry PDF from 2019 or say "trust me," walk. Same with IP65. It means dust-tight and protected against water jets. It does not mean your sign survives a hurricane. IP66 handles powerful jets, IP68 is submersible. For most outdoor signs, IP65 is minimum.
We don't hold UL 48. That costs $4,000-15,000 and 4-9 months, plus quarterly audits. If your job requires UL-listed signs, we're not your factory. ETL is cheaper, 10-30% less, but we don't hold that either. We can build to NEC Article 600 specs, but certification is on you. I'd rather lose a quote than ship a sign that fails inspection.
Look, shipping from China isn't one number. Express is 7-15 days and costs $30-100 for a small box. Air freight is 10-20 days at $4-12/kg. Sea freight LCL takes 50-70 days and runs $80-200 per cubic meter. Full container is $1,200-3,000. Our production lead time is 7-15 days on top of that.
