Look, "factory direct" is the most abused phrase in this industry. Every trading company with a rented warehouse in Shenzhen claims to be a factory. They take your order, mark it up 30%, and send it to a real factory like mine. You're not saving money; you're paying for their brochure.
Here's what a real factory looks like. We have 3,000 m² of production space in Lu'an, Anhui, with 50+ skilled workers. We cut, bend, weld, polish, assemble, and test on-site. We've exported worldwide since 2010. MOQ is one piece, not one container.
The ugly truth is that many "wholesale" quotes you see online are from middlemen who don't know the difference between 304 and 316 stainless. They'll quote you a price that looks good, then the delivered sign arrives with cheap LEDs that die in 18 months.
I've seen this go wrong: a contractor ordered 40 front-lit channel letters from an online reseller. The quote was $15 a letter. The LEDs lasted one winter. He paid $12,000 to have them re-lettered. Our price would have been $30 a letter with Samsung modules, and he'd still be lit.
Materials That Survive On A Building Face
Here's what nobody tells you: acrylic isn't acrylic. The cheap domestic stuff starts yellowing in 1-2 years under UV. Imported Mitsubishi or Degussa acrylic holds color for 5-8 years. That's the difference between a sign that looks sharp and one that looks like it has jaundice.
For exterior building letters, you've got three main material choices.
Stainless steel letters give you 10+ years outdoors, and if you're near saltwater, step up to 316 stainless, which adds molybdenum and costs 20-30% more but lasts 15+ years. Aluminum is one-third the weight of steel and naturally rust-proof, good for 8-12 years.
Acrylic face signs like
front-lit channel letters are the storefront standard. Light transmittance is 90-92%, and you can get 2mm, 3mm, or 5mm thickness. Over 2.5 meters wide, use 5mm or it'll bow like a politician's promise.
LEDs: The Heartbeat You Can't See
Look, the LED module is the one thing most buyers never ask about, and it's the one thing that determines whether your sign is a beacon or a blackout. Quality modules from Samsung, Osram, or Blueview run 100-150 lumens per watt and have an L70 lifespan of 50,000 hours. Cheap modules claim the same but burn out in 12-18 months.
We build with SMD 2835 as the industry standard, SMD 5730 for highest brightness, and SMD 5050 when RGB color is needed. Color temperature matters: 3000-3500K warm for hospitality, 4000-5000K neutral for corporate, 6000-6500K cool for industrial. Don't let a contractor pick this for you; ask your client.
Our warranty is 2 years on LEDs and 1 year on power supplies. That's honest. If you want a 5-year warranty, we can price it, but it means using premium drivers and potting everything, which adds cost. Most factories won't tell you that.
Pricing: What A Fair Quote Actually Looks Like
The ugly truth is that sign pricing is opaque because factories don't want you to compare line items. Here's our factory price range per letter, right now. Front-lit channel letters: $20-80. Back-lit halo letters: $35-120. Stainless steel non-lit: $15-40. 3D fabricated letters: $40-120. Aluminum letters: $10-25.

back-lit halo letter is the premium architectural choice. It's more expensive because it requires a rear acrylic diffuser, a standoff mount, and precision welding. But it's what makes a law firm or medical building look like they charge by the hour.
What about light boxes?
Acrylic light boxes run $80-250 per square meter, and neon flex signs are $30-200 per sign depending on complexity. Compare that to US retail installed prices: $200-700 per front-lit letter, $400-1,000 per halo-lit letter. Factory direct saves you 50-65% on product, but you still pay shipping, tariffs, and local installation.
Shipping And The Tariff Elephant
Look, if you're importing into the US, Section 301 tariffs are about 30% on signage. That's not a hidden fee; it's a line item on your customs entry. I've had customers get angry at me for a tariff they voted for. Don't be that guy.
Shipping options break down like this. Express: 7-15 days, $30-100 for small packages. Air freight: 10-20 days, $4-12 per kilogram. Sea freight: 50-70 days, $80-200 per cubic meter for LCL, or $1,200-3,000 for a full container. For a sign shop ordering 20 letters, LCL sea freight is usually the sweet spot.
We package everything with foam, carton, then plywood crate. A sign that arrives damaged is a sign you can't sell, and I've seen too many factories wrap a $500 channel letter in newspaper and hope for the best.
Certifications: When A Piece Of Paper Is Worth Money
I've seen this go wrong: a contractor ordered LED signs for a municipal building. Inspector asked for UL listing. The factory had a fake certificate. The whole project got red-tagged, and the contractor ate the cost of replacing every sign.
CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks. Many factories claim they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today's date. We have CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001, and we'll show you the actual documents, not a blurry JPEG from 2015.
For the US, UL 48 is the gold standard but costs $4,000-15,000 and takes 4-9 months with quarterly audits. ETL is a cheaper alternative at 10-30% less. If your job requires UL, tell us upfront and we'll price it in. But don't assume it's included in a $25 letter.
IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets; that's the minimum for outdoor signs. IP66 handles powerful jets, IP68 is submersible. For most building exteriors, IP65 is fine. If you're in a coastal hurricane zone, ask for IP66 and stainless 316.
How We Build It: 10 Steps And No Shortcuts
Here's what nobody tells you: a sign is not a sticker. Our process: design confirmation (1 day), laser cutting (±0.1mm, 1-2 days), TIG welding/bending (1-2 days), grinding/polishing (1-2 days), CNC acrylic face (1 day), LED assembly (1-2 days), sealing with neutral silicone (1 day), then an 8-12 hour aging test, 100% QC inspection, and export packaging. Total: 7-15 days.
That aging test is where cheap factories skip. They wire up the LEDs, see them blink, and ship. We run every sign for 8-12 hours to catch early failures. If a module is going to die, it usually dies in the first day. Better it dies in our factory than on your building.
What We Can't Do (And Won't Pretend To)
Look, we're a factory, not a general contractor. We don't do site surveys. We don't pull permits. We don't climb a ladder and install your sign. We make the sign, package it, and ship it. You need a local licensed sign contractor for the rest. Anyone who claims to do it all from China is lying.
We also don't do UL listing by default. If you need UL, it's an additional cost and 4-9 months of lead time. We can coordinate with a UL lab, but it's not free, and it's not fast. And we don't accept returns on custom signs once production starts. A 5-foot stainless steel letter shaped like your client's logo can't be resold to the next guy.
