I've watched sign shops pay $800 for a front-lit letter from a domestic fabricator. Same 304 stainless, same Samsung LEDs. We ship that letter for $120 — and it's not even our most profitable product.

Here's the part they don't put in the brochure: the "Chinese sign manufacturer" you're emailing might be a trading company in a rented office three cities away from the factory. "I need channel letters" isn't a specification. That's a vague intention that'll get you quoted on 2mm domestic acrylic that starts yellowing in 18 months.

Here's the number that matters: a 3mm acrylic face cuts 92% of light output. A 2mm face cuts 90%.

Your customer won't notice the 2% difference, but they'll sure as hell notice the 40% cost bump on a premium Mitsubishi or Degussa UV-resistant sheet that lasts 5-8 years instead of the 1-2 you'll get from cheap domestic acrylic. If you're ordering front-lit channel letters for a storefront, nail down face thickness and acrylic grade before you ever ask for a quote.

Same story with metal. 304 stainless has 18% chromium and 8% nickel, and that's your workhorse for a 10-year outdoor life. 316 adds 2-3% molybdenum and pushes you past 15 years in coastal or industrial air. That'll cost you 20-30% more.

For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach, pay for 316 or you'll be pulling corroded letters off a fascia in three years.
