Here's what nobody tells you about comparing sign quotes: the cheapest one isn't a bargain. It's a bait — and you're the fish.
I've been building signs since 2010, and I've watched contractors burn themselves on quotes that looked identical on paper. Same letter dimensions. Same "stainless steel." Same "premium LED." Then the signs show up looking like trash six months later, and the buyer has no legal leg to stand on because the spec sheet said "stainless steel" — but didn't say 304, didn't say brushed or mirror, didn't say what gauge.
The ugly truth is that most sign quotes are nothing more than a picture and a number.
So how do you compare apples to apples? You stop accepting vague language. You force every factory — including mine — to show their cards. Here's the exact spec grid I use when buying from other factories, and what we send when we quote you.
A front-lit channel letter can cost $20 or $80 from the same factory, same size. The difference isn't profit margin. It's a list of decisions the factory made for you, often without asking.
Here's what nobody tells you: the price difference between a good sign and a bad sign is usually 30–40%. The difference in your waste, your service calls, and your customer's goodwill is ten times that.
So you need a spec sheet that has no blank spaces. If a quote doesn't include every one of the following, ask for it. If they can't answer, walk.
Acrylic is the face of your letter. It's what catches the light and the customer's eye. But not all acrylic is equal — and I promise you, the factory knows which they're using.
Mitsubishi and Degussa acrylic holds 90–92% light transmittance and resists yellowing for 5–8 years. Domestic acrylic might look fine on day one, but it'll yellow in 1–2 years, especially in sun. That's a cheap sign that turns into a $200 re-letter job.
Ask for: "What brand of acrylic? What UV rating? What thickness?" For letters over 2.5 meters, thickness should be at least 5mm. Under that, 3mm works. If they quote "3mm acrylic" without a brand, that's a red flag.
You'd think "stainless steel letters" tells you everything. It doesn't.
304 stainless is the standard — 18% chromium, 8% nickel, 10+ year outdoor life. 316 has 2–3% molybdenum and lasts 15+ years, but costs 20–30% more. If your sign is going within 1–2 km of the ocean, pay for 316. If it's on a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine.
Also ask about finish: brushed #4, mirror #8, PVD, or powder coated. Each has a different look and a different cost. Don't let them decide for you.
One more thing: gauge matters. 1.0mm vs 1.5mm stainless is a big cost difference in material, but also in durability. Light-gauge metal bends in wind. We use 1.0–3.0mm depending on letter size. If you're buying big channel letters, insist on at least 1.2mm. We've seen signs shipped with 0.8mm metal that wrinkled like paper in a storm. That's one of those common industry lies: "standard stainless" usually means the thinnest thing that won't break in transit.
This is where factories make their real money if you let them.
Quality LED modules — think Samsung, Osram, or the better Chinese brands like Blueview (Landscape) — will give you L70 ratings of 50,000+ hours, meaning real life of 5+ years. Cheap modules claim the same "50,000 hours" but fail at 12–18 months because they're driven too hard and there's no thermal management.
Ask specifically: "What brand and model of LED chip? What's the lm/W? Do you have an LM-80 test report?"
Our standard is SMD 2835 — the industry workhorse at 100–150 lm/W — or SMD 5730 for high-brightness applications. If the factory says "LED" without a series number, assume it's the cheapest thing they could find in Shenzhen.
Even the best LEDs die if the power supply is junk. Voltage spikes, flicker, short life — it all comes back to the driver.
Make sure the quote states the manufacturer of the transformer, the input/output voltage, IP rating, and whether it's UL or CE listed.
Our warranty covers 2 years on LEDs and 1 year on power supplies, because that's what we see in the field. If someone promises 5 years on a $15 transformer, they're lying.
IP65 is the minimum for outdoor signs. It means dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction. IP66 is for coastal and heavy rain zones. IP68 is submersible — which you don't need unless you're mounting the sign in a fish tank.
Here's what nobody tells you: IP ratings only apply to the LED modules and electrical connections. The sign itself is only as waterproof as the silicone sealing job. We use neutral structural silicone on every seam and test every sign with a water spray before boxing. Not all factories do that. Ask if they run an 8–12 hour aging test after sealing.
CE marking is common for factories exporting to Europe. It costs 20,000–50,000 RMB to get certified, and you have to renew it. So if a factory says they have CE, ask to see the certificate. Most of them have a scanned PDF from a previous certification that expired three years ago.
For the US, UL 48 is the sign standard. It's expensive: $4,000–15,000 and 4–9 months of audits. If a factory claims UL, ask for the file number and verify it on UL's website.
We run CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001. We do not have UL — and we'll tell you that straight. If you need UL-listed signs for a US national chain, we aren't your factory. But if you need CE for Europe, or you need signs built to UL-compliant components and get inspected locally, that's something we can do. Don't let a factory pretend they can do what they can't. Ask for proof.
Sea freight is cheap for a reason: your sign spends 60 days in a steel box with salt air and condensation. If the factory doesn't package well, you'll open the crate to find rust, scratches, or broken acrylic.
Our standard export packaging is foam + carton + plywood crate. That's not an upsell, that's the only way to ship a sign 5,000 miles.
Know the shipping terms, too. A quote should state FOB, EXW, or CIF. We ship from Lu'an, Anhui. For a 3,000m² factory with 50+ workers, we do a lot of export. But we don't control customs clearance on your end. You need a broker who knows sign tariffs — and remember, US Section 301 tariffs add roughly 30% on Chinese-made signs. That's not our tax; that's your reality.
Anyone can promise 7 days. Ask what happens when they miss it.
Our standard lead time is 7–15 days from confirming the artwork. That includes laser cutting, bending, welding (TIG), grinding, polishing, acrylic CNC routing, LED assembly, silicone sealing, an 8–12 hour aging test, and 100% inspection. If you need faster, we can't rush that process without compromising quality. That's our honest limit.
Warranty: We give 2 years on LEDs and 1 year on power supplies. That's not a marketing gimmick — that's what we can defend. If a factory offers a 5-year full warranty, ask what their claim history looks like. Some do, some don't.
Take any quote you have and build a table. Columns: material, brand/spec, thickness, finish, certification, warranty, packaging, lead time. If a cell is blank, that's not a quote — that's a placeholder.
