I've burned my hands on hot acrylic more times than I care to count. Twenty-seven years on the factory floor, and I still watch buyers walk into the same trap: they pick a Chinese supplier based on a slick website and a price that looks too good to be true.
It always ends the same way. Either the order shows up late, or the acrylic yellows in a year, or the LEDs flicker like a cheap motel sign. And by then, the deposit's gone and the factory's not answering WeChat.
Here's what nobody tells you: most "factory audit" checklists floating around the internet were written by people who've never set foot in a Chinese workshop. They'll tell you to check for clean floors and organized shelves. That's fine. That's also useless.
A spotless showroom can still ship you LED modules that die in 14 months. Meanwhile, some dusty shop down the road has been quietly exporting worldwide for over a decade. You need to know what actually matters.
Do your homework. And I don't mean reading their "About Us" page.
Ask for the company's Chinese business license — the actual government registration, not the English brochure version. Check the registration date. In China, "factories" get registered every week, and plenty of them operate out of a spare bedroom with a phone and a prayer. If a supplier can't produce their license on the spot, walk away.
Ask for their freight forwarder's name. Ask which port they ship from — Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen. If the answers are vague, that's a red flag. Real factories know exactly how their goods move because they pack them themselves.
Check how long they've actually been in business. We set up Aochuang in 2010 and run a 3,000m² facility with 50+ skilled workers. That doesn't make us special — it makes us traceable. You can verify our history, our certifications, our export record. That's the point.
The ugly truth is: CE marking costs 20,000 to 50,000 RMB and takes 2 to 8 weeks. Most factories say they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today's date on the test report — not a scan someone's been reusing since 2018.
UL is a whole different beast. It costs $4,000 to $15,000, takes 4 to 9 months, and requires quarterly factory audits. If a Chinese factory quotes you "UL-listed" signs working in a week, they're either lying or planning to send you something that'll get rejected at customs.
Here's our honest position: we hold CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001. We don't hold UL. If your project strictly requires UL-listed components, I'll tell you that up front and help you figure out what it means for your timeline and budget. Not because we're generous — because it saves everyone months of pain.
And IP65? It means dust-tight and protected against water jets. It does NOT mean your sign survives a Florida hurricane. Know the difference before you order.
Don't ask to "see the factory." Ask to see specific things.
Ask for the laser cutting machine in action. Ask to see the bending brake, the TIG welding station, the grinding bench. Ask to see their aging test rack — the lights running right now, not a photo from last year. Ask what silicone they use for sealing. Ask to see how they actually pack an export order.
I've seen this go wrong: a buyer scheduled a video tour of a beautiful factory, got the grand tour, paid the deposit, and then their shipments came from an entirely different facility. So ask them to hold a piece of paper with today's date next to the machine. If they hesitate, there's your answer.

You ask "is this 304 stainless?" They say "of course!" Don't take their word for it.
304 stainless steel has 18% chromium and 8% nickel, density 7.93 g/cm³. Ask for the mill certificate for the steel batch. If they can't provide one, it's not 304.
316 stainless contains 2-3% molybdenum and costs 20-30% more than 304. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach, pay for 316. Your coastal clients will thank you in year 12.
Acrylic matters just as much. Mitsubishi and Degussa UV-resistant acrylic lasts 5-8 years outdoors. Domestic acrylic starts yellowing in 1-2 years. Ask which brand they're using. If the answer is just "imported acrylic," it isn't imported.
LEDs are the other big lie. SMD 2835 is the industry standard, pushing 100-150 lumens per watt. Quality modules from Samsung or Osram run 5+ years in the real world. Cheap knockoffs last 12-18 months, and you'll be paying for replacements in the dark.
Same deal with aluminum. The wall thickness range is 0.040-0.063" — and anodized aluminum laughs at weather for 8-12 years. Powder coating is only as good as the surface prep underneath it.

Look, I've watched sign shops pay $800 for a front-lit channel letter. Same 304 stainless, same Samsung LEDs. We ship those same letters for around $120. Factory-direct savings of 50-65% are real, and they're the whole reason you're shopping overseas.

Factory-price reality check: front-lit letters run $20-80 per letter. Back-lit halo letters run $35-120. Stainless steel non-lit letters run $15-40. Aluminum letters run $10-25. Light boxes run $80-250 per square meter.
If the quote sits below that range, you're buying problems. Cheap modules, thinner steel, shortcuts in the bending, corners cut in the sealing. I've seen the aftermath of those decisions a hundred times.
