You’ve clicked a dozen factory websites. Every one promises “premium illuminated storefront signs” with “factory direct pricing.” I run a sign factory in Lu’an, and I’m going to tell you what’s real.
Here’s what nobody tells you: most of those quote buttons lead to a salesperson who’s never welded a letter in their life. They punch your numbers into a spreadsheet, add 20%, and email you back. I’ve been on the floor for 16 years. When you request a quote from us, it comes past my desk, and I check if the spec will actually survive your climate, your voltage, and your building inspector’s mood.
I’ve seen this go wrong: a contractor in Texas ordered 40 back-lit halo letters from a “factory” on Alibaba. He paid $3,800. Three months later, the LEDs started dying. Not because the factory lied—because he didn’t ask what LED modules they used. We pack Samsung or Osram diodes every time, not no-name chips that cost three cents each. If the quote doesn’t list the LED brand, walk away.
So what’s the real cost? Our front-lit channel letters start at $20 per letter. That’s a standard 10-inch cap height, domestic acrylic, IP65 rated, with a decent power supply. Swap to UV-resistant Mitsubishi acrylic, and you’re at $35. That same letter, installed on a US storefront, runs $200 to $700. The factory-direct savings aren’t a marketing gimmick; they’re a dead-simple removal of three layers of markup.
A different animal is back-lit halo letters. You’re paying for architectural-grade fabrication: 304 stainless returns, precision standoffs, and hidden LED strips that cast light 360° behind the letter. Factory price ranges from $35 to $120, depending on size and finish. Mirror-polish stainless takes twice the labor but never needs repainting.
The ugly truth is that some clients need a flush, borderless face and don’t want a trim cap blocking the glow. Rimless channel letters give you that. But they’re unforgiving. If the silicone seal isn’t applied with monastic patience, water gets inside and the letter becomes a fish tank. We vacuum-test every rimless unit. We also drill a tiny weep hole on the bottom edge. I’d rather explain that 1mm hole than replace a sign.
Look, for storefront signs bigger than a few letters, an acrylic light box often makes more sense. We build them from extruded aluminum framing, UV-printed or vinyl-faced acrylic, and interior LED strips at 120 lumens per watt. Cost runs $80 to $250 per square meter. Now, before you fire off a quote request, understand what we can’t do.
We can’t ship you a sign with UL 48 certification unless you commission it. UL listing costs $4,000 to $15,000 per product family, takes 4 to 9 months, and requires quarterly factory audits. Any factory that claims to throw in UL for free on your custom channel letters is either lying or faking a mark. We hold CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001. If your city demands a UL file number, tell us upfront. We’ll guide you to a UL partner, but it adds cost and lead time. Don’t discover this during permit review.
Another thing: we won’t build a 3-meter-wide letter out of 3mm acrylic because “the client wants to save weight.” A sign that size in Chicago wind needs 5mm minimum, preferably 6mm, reinforced with an aluminum frame. We’ve rejected orders that would have failed within six months. Losing a sale stings less than watching your sign bow like a potato chip on Google Street View.
Here’s what you get with our materials—and why it matters.
For face material, we use Mitsubishi or Degussa acrylic, 90-92% light transmittance, UV-resistant for 5 to 8 years before any yellowing. Domestic acrylic costs less but starts to degrade in 1 to 2 years outdoors. I’ve cut costs for indoor malls with domestic sheet, but for a beachfront store, I eat the premium board. Stainless steel returns are 304 grade, 1.2mm to 3.0mm thickness. Density 7.93 g/cm³, 18% chrome, 8% nickel. It’ll last a decade without pitting. If you’re 500 feet from salt water, I recommend 316 marine grade — 2-3% molybdenum, 15+ year lifespan. It’s a 20-30% cost bump, but cheaper than replacing letters every other hurricane season.
LEDs make or break the sign. We use SMD 2835 chips, 100-150 lumens per watt, L70 rated at 50,000 hours—about 5.7 years of continuous nighttime operation. But real-world lifespan is shorter if the module overheats. That’s why we space modules per brand specs, not per “save five bucks” instincts. Color temperature: 3000K warm for hospitality, 4000K neutral for corporate, 6500K cool for highway-facing pylons. Tell us your application, or we’ll default to 6000K and you’ll look like a dentist office.
Here’s a production snapshot so you know we’re not back-room assemblers. The 10-step process runs tight: design confirmation in a day, laser cutting to ±0.1mm tolerance, TIG welding the returns, grinding and polishing (mirror or brushed), CNC routing acrylic faces, LED assembly with 3M VHB and mechanical fasteners, neutral silicone sealing, then a mandatory 8-12 hour aging test. Every sign goes through 100% QC under a lux meter. Only then do we pack in foam, carton, and plywood crate. Twelve years of this rhythm, and we still reject about 3% of units before shipping.
Now about money.
You’re probably comparison shopping, so let’s make the landed cost obvious. Factory price for a typical storefront set—say, twelve 14-inch front-lit letters, 304 stainless returns, 5mm acrylic faces, shipped to a US port—runs about $960. Ocean freight LCL adds roughly $120-180. Section 301 tariff at 30% of declared value: $288. You’re at $1,428 landed, excluding customs broker fees. That same set, installed by a US sign shop, would be $6,000 to $8,000. The savings are not 5%; they’re structural.
Look, some clients try to dodge the tariff with under-invoiced customs declarations. We won’t do it. US Customs confiscates shipments and fines importers. I’m not risking our export license so you can save $300. Declare truthfully, factor the tariff, and still pocket 50-65%.
Shipping speed? Express (DHL/FedEx) gets a small box to your door in 7-10 days, but that’s $30-100 per letter-sized parcel—use it for samples. Air freight runs about 10 days at $4-12/kg. Sea freight takes about 65 days and costs $80-200/m³ LCL. If you need the sign for a grand opening in four weeks, don’t call a Chinese factory. I’ve said that to clients even though it meant losing an order. Lead time from deposit to ship is 7-15 working days, so with air freight you’re at one month; with sea, two and a half months. Plan accordingly.
Requesting a real quote online that doesn’t waste your time means sending real specs. Don’t write “I need signage for my store.” Send me this: letter height, quantity, front-lit or halo-lit, material preference, color temperature, IP rating needed, voltage (120V US or 220V elsewhere), and whether you need a UL or ETL path. Without that, my quote will be a guess—and guesses cost you money. I’d rather spend 15 minutes asking you questions than pad a quote to cover unknowns.
I’ll leave you with one more uncomfortable truth: our MOQ is one piece. But ordering one custom letter costs disproportionately more than ordering twenty. The setup time for cutting your unique font, bending the returns, and building a one-off jig remains the same. So if you’re prototyping, order three at once—you’ll save on amortized setup and have spares when the landlord pushes the sign permit back.
