IP Rating Guide for Outdoor LED Signs: IP65 vs IP66 vs IP68

If you've bought outdoor signs more than once, you've seen the IP rating sticker.

Look, IP stands for Ingress Protection. Two digits. First digit solids, second water. Not complicated. But sign buyers get sold the wrong one every single week. I've watched shops pay a 15% premium for IP68 when a properly sealed IP65 would have outlasted the building lease.

Here's what nobody tells you: an IP rating is a test result, not a feature. It tells you what happened when one sample sign went through a specific water spray or dust chamber for a specific number of minutes. It does not tell you what happens after two years of Florida humidity, three winters of freeze-thaw, or a maintenance guy with a pressure washer set to "strip paint."

Let's break the digits down so you know exactly what you're buying.

What those two digits actually mean

  • First digit (0-6): protection against solids. 5 = dust-protected, not perfectly sealed but enough to keep out harmful dust. 6 = dust-tight, no dust ingress at all.
  • Second digit (0-8): protection against water. 5 = low-pressure jets from any direction. 6 = powerful jets. 7 = temporary immersion up to 1 meter. 8 = continuous immersion beyond 1 meter.

That's it. No mystery. IP65 = 6 for dust-tight, 5 for water jets. IP66 = 6 for dust-tight, 6 for powerful jets. IP68 = 6 for dust-tight, 8 for continuous immersion.

For outdoor illuminated signage, IP65 is the floor. Not IP44, not IP54. If a supplier quotes an outdoor light box at IP54, walk away. That's a sign that'll collect dust in the LED tray and fog up after the first storm.

IP65: the workhorse for 90% of outdoor signs

Most building-mounted signs don't get submerged. They get rained on, hosed off, and occasionally hit with wind-driven rain. IP65 handles that. A dust-tight enclosure with protection against low-pressure jets from any direction.

Our standard outdoor channel letters and light boxes are built to IP65. We seal the acrylic face with neutral silicone, not hot glue. We use gasketed cable entries. We run every sign through an 8-12 hour aging test with the LEDs on, looking for moisture or condensation before it ships.

If your sign is going on a storefront in Ohio, a shopping center in Texas, or a restaurant facade in Georgia, front-lit channel letters or acrylic light boxes at IP65 are the right call. Paying more for IP66 or IP68 won't make the LEDs brighter or the acrylic last longer. It just costs you money.

IP66: when the water fights back

IP66 is for powerful water jets. Think coastal buildings with salt spray hitting the sign, industrial areas where someone pressure-washes the facade every month, or signs mounted near HVAC exhaust that spits water vapor constantly.

Here's what nobody tells you: IP66 is not just IP65 with a better sticker. It means the enclosure is sealed tighter, the gaskets are thicker, and the cable glands are compression-fit. We can build IP66 for the same channel letter or light box, but it adds cost and a little lead time. Not huge—maybe 5-10%—because the process change is real.

For a coastal installation, IP66 plus 316 stainless hardware is the combo that survives. 316 stainless costs 20-30% more than 304, but it contains 2-3% molybdenum to resist chloride corrosion. 304 is fine for most inland sites. Miami Beach, Long Island Sound, or any building within two miles of salt water—pay for 316 and IP66.

That's not an upsell. It's the difference between a sign that looks good for 15 years and one with rust bleeding down the facade in 18 months.

IP68: the rating nobody actually needs unless...

IP68 means the sign can be continuously submerged in water beyond 1 meter. Let that sink in. Unless your sign is going in a swimming pool, a fountain, a dock that floods completely, or a flood zone where the sign gets fully underwater for hours, IP68 is a waste of money.

I've seen this go wrong: a contractor in Louisiana ordered IP68 channel letters for a strip mall facade. He paid extra. The sign never touched standing water. What he actually needed was IP66 with a properly weatherproofed power supply. The IP68 did nothing except make his quote 15% higher and his lead time two days longer.

We can build IP68 if the job genuinely calls for it—fully potted LED modules, welded seams, no weep holes, and a submersion test before shipping. But I'll tell you straight: most signs don't need it. If you're not planning to sink the sign, don't pay for a submarine.

The ugly truth about IP ratings in this industry

The ugly truth is many factories print any IP rating you want on the label. I've walked through supplier showrooms where every light box has IP65 printed on the spec sheet and zero test reports to back it. It's not a sticker, it's a process. A real IP65 sign has a sealed face, a gasketed back plate, waterproof cable glands, and a factory that actually tests for ingress.

Ask for the test report. Not the CE certificate—that's a different thing. Not the ISO 9001—that's about process quality, not ingress protection. Ask for the specific IP65, IP66, or IP68 test report with a date, a lab name, and a sample photo. If the supplier gets quiet or says "we guarantee it," that means they've never tested it.

CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks. Most factories say they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today's date. Same rule applies to IP ratings.

We have CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001. Those are real. But when a customer asks for a UL 48 listing, I tell them the truth: UL 48 costs $4,000 to $15,000, takes 4-9 months, and requires quarterly audits. We don't carry an in-house UL listing. We can build to NEC Article 600 specs and we can guide you on the certification path, but the UL listing is the buyer's responsibility. ETL is a UL alternative and runs 10-30% cheaper, but someone still has to pay for it. If a factory tells you they have UL 48 and charges you nothing extra, be suspicious.

The power supply is the weak link, not the IP rating

Rookie mistake: assuming IP65 on the sign means the whole system is waterproof. Most sign failures aren't the LEDs. They're the driver. The power supply sits inside the sign body or in a separate junction box. If that box isn't sealed, or if the driver is a $3 no-name unit, your IP65 sign will still die in the first big storm.

Quality LED power supplies have their own ingress rating and are often potted in epoxy. Cheap ones are open PCBs with a thin aluminum shell. We use sealed power supplies on outdoor jobs and we include a 1-year warranty on the power supply. The LEDs themselves get 2 years. But if you buy a sign with a $2 driver, the IP rating on the outside doesn't matter—the inside is already doomed.

What IP rating does NOT fix

Look, an IP rating won't save you from cheap LEDs. Cheap SMD 2835 modules last 12-18 months before they start flickering or losing half their brightness. Quality modules from Samsung, Osram, or Blueview run 5+ years real lifespan, with L70 at 50,000 hours. That's a bigger durability factor than IP65 versus IP66.

An IP rating won't fix UV yellowing. Domestic acrylic lasts 1-2 years before it starts to yellow. UV-resistant acrylic from Mitsubishi or Degussa lasts 5-8 years. If your sign faces direct afternoon sun, the acrylic choice matters more than the IP rating.
