A U.S. sign company charges $200-700 per front-lit channel letter installed. That's not because the letter is expensive. That's because they're covering rent, sales commissions, insurance, and three layers of markup.
Let's break the numbers down like a grown-up.
Here are our factory prices, right off the floor in Lu'an, Anhui. These aren't teaser rates. They're what we quote for standard size letters, 12-18 inches tall, single-color LED.
Now compare that to U.S. retail installed pricing. Front-lit runs $200-700 per letter. Halo-lit runs $400-1,000. The product cost is maybe 15-25% of that installed price. The rest is labor, permits, bucket truck rental, and profit. Nothing wrong with profit. But if you're buying the letters themselves, you shouldn't be paying retail letter prices.
Let's say you need 10 front-lit channel letters for a storefront, 18 inches tall, red acrylic face, white LEDs, outdoor rated. U.S. sign shop quotes $350 per letter installed, plus $150 permit and $200 site survey. Product cost from their supplier? Maybe $50 per letter.
Our factory price for that same letter is $35-55 depending on finish. Ten letters from us: $350-550 plus shipping. From the sign shop: $3,500 plus fees. You save 50-65% on product. You still need local installation, but that's a separate line item you can negotiate directly with an installer.
Now do the math on 100 letters for a franchise rollout. That's where importers make real money.
Look, a front-lit channel letter is basically a metal can with an acrylic face and LEDs inside. A halo letter is a different animal. You need a solid metal back, standoffs to mount it off the wall, and LEDs aimed backward to create that glow. More metal, more labor, more QC. That's why back-lit starts at $35 and goes to $120 per letter. If someone quotes you $20 for a halo letter, run. They're using cheap acrylic and no-name LEDs that'll die in 18 months.
If you're specifying back-lit halo letters for a premium building, expect the factory cost to be at least 50% higher than front-lit. That's not markup. That's the cost of design.
Acrylic transmittance is 90-92% for good material. UV-resistant acrylic from Mitsubishi or Degussa lasts 5-8 years outdoors. Domestic Chinese acrylic? 1-2 years before it starts yellowing. If a factory quote doesn't specify the brand, assume domestic. That's a rookie mistake that'll have you replacing faces in 18 months.
For metal, 304 stainless is the workhorse. 10+ year outdoor life, 18% chromium, 8% nickel. 316 costs 20-30% more but adds 2-3% molybdenum for marine corrosion. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach, pay for 316. Don't let a supplier upsell you to 316 for an inland sign. That's just margin padding.
