Look, you're not buying from a trading company in Shenzhen that slaps a logo on someone else's work. You're buying from the people who cut, bend, weld, and wire the letters. When you ask if 316 stainless can handle coastal salt, the answer comes from someone who's welded it.
We make outdoor illuminated business signs in four main types: front-lit channel letters, back-lit halo letters, rimless channel letters, and dual-lit channel letters. Each has a different price, look, and failure point. Most storefront buyers start with
front-lit channel letters because they're the retail standard.
Factory prices for those run $20–$80 per letter depending on height, acrylic, and LED. That's not a teaser rate. That's what importers pay before shipping and tariff. If you want the architectural glow,
back-lit halo letters run $35–$120 per letter. They use more labor and a different lens.
Here's what nobody tells you: "factory wholesale" doesn't mean free freight. Any factory that quotes $45 per letter DDP to Dallas is lying to you. Freight, tariff, customs bond, and delivery are real line items. I'll break them down later.
MOQ: We Take One Piece. Here's Why That Can Hurt.

I'll say it again: one piece. If you need a single outdoor illuminated sign for a pilot store, we'll make it.
But shipping one letter by express costs $30–$100, and the per-letter price climbs because setup labor doesn't spread. The ugly truth is MOQ 1 is for testing quality, not for profitable resale. You're better off ordering a sample letter or a small set.
If you're an importer, order 20–50 letters and ship LCL by sea. That's when the $20–$80 front-lit price works in your favor. If you're a contractor, the minimum isn't the issue; the lead time is.
We don't charge a setup fee for standard channel letters. Custom shapes, 3D fabricated letters, and large signs need CAD approval before we touch metal. That step takes one day if you answer emails.
Lead Time: 7–15 Days, Unless You Ignore This Step
The clock doesn't start when you send an email. It starts when we have confirmed artwork, copy, dimensions, and a 50% deposit.
I've seen this go wrong: a buyer sent a logo as a low-res JPG and spent three days emailing the vector file while his install crew sat on site. His sign shipped nine days late and he blamed us for the delay.
Our production floor runs a 10-step process: design confirmation, laser cutting (±0.1mm), bending and TIG welding, grinding and polishing, acrylic face CNC, LED assembly, silicone sealing, 8–12 hour aging test, 100% QC inspection, and export packaging. Total time is 7–15 days for most orders under 100 letters.
Add 1–2 days if you need painted finishes or PVD coating. Add 3–5 days if your sign is over 2.5 meters in one piece because we use thicker acrylic, more bracing, and a heavier crate. We don't rush the aging test. You want the LEDs to fail on our bench, not on your storefront.
Materials That Survive Outside (And Ones That Don't)
Outdoor is not indoor with a bigger power supply. UV eats cheap acrylic in 1–2 years. We use Mitsubishi or Degussa UV-resistant acrylic with 90–92% light transmittance. That material lasts 5–8 years outdoors before yellowing. Domestic acrylic is cheaper, but we'll tell you if a client insists on it and what they're giving up.
For faces and light boxes, common thicknesses are 2mm, 3mm, and 5mm. Anything over 2.5 meters wide needs 5mm or thicker or the face bows in the wind. Here's what nobody tells you: many factories use 2mm on a 3-meter sign to save $30. That sign fails at the first storm.
Stainless steel letters and returns are 304 stainless as standard. Density is 7.93g/cm³, 18% chromium, 8% nickel. You'll get 10+ years outdoors with brushed #4 or mirror #8 finish. If you're within 5 miles of salt water, step up to 316 stainless with 2–3% molybdenum. It costs 20–30% more, but it's cheaper than replacing a pitted sign in two years.
Aluminum letters are a third the weight of steel and naturally rust-proof. We use 1.0–1.6mm aluminum, anodized, powder coated, or brushed. Expect 8–12 years outdoors. For a non-lit metal look that still eats weather,
stainless steel letters are the workhorse.
Color temperature matters more than most buyers think. 3000–3500K warm for hospitality. 4000–5000K neutral for corporate or retail. 6000–6500K cool for industrial or highway. If the client asks for a "bright" sign at 6500K for a bakery, tell them it'll look like a hospital.
LEDs are where factories cheat. We use SMD 2835 modules at 100–150 lumens per watt as standard, with Samsung, Osram, or Blueview modules for quality jobs. L70 rating is 50,000 hours. That means 50,000 hours before brightness drops to 70%. Real lifespan on quality modules is 5+ years. Cheap no-name modules? 12–18 months before they flicker and die.
The ugly truth is most outdoor sign failures aren't the acrylic or the steel. It's water getting into the LED channel. We seal every face with neutral silicone and pressure-test critical joints. IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets. It doesn't mean submersible. For coastal or extreme weather, ask for IP66, and we'll use extra gaskets and drainage.
What You'll Pay, What You'll Save, and the Tariff Nobody Mentions
Factory prices are not installed prices. If you're buying direct from China, stop comparing our quote to the $700 per letter a US sign company charges installed. That installed price includes UL listing, permits, local service, and a truck roll. We can't install in Ohio.
