Look, you can buy a sign panel at half the price if you accept domestic acrylic. I’ve tested it. After two summers in a Texas parking lot, it looks like a smoker’s teeth.
Mitsubishi or Degussa acrylic has 90–92% light transmittance and UV inhibitors that keep it clear for 5–8 years. The domestic stuff yellows in 1–2 years. For faces over 2.5 meters, we use 5mm or thicker to prevent sagging. On metal, stainless 304 costs $X but lasts 10+ years inland. 316 adds molybdenum and survives salt spray for 15+ years; it costs 20–30% more. I tell clients in Miami Beach: pay for 316. In Ohio, 304 is plenty. Stainless steel letters with a brushed #4 finish hide scratches better than mirror #8. Powder coating adds a decade of durability and any RAL color.
LEDs are where factories lie hardest. SMD 2835 chips from Samsung or Osram deliver 100–150 lumens per watt, and they’ll still push 70% brightness after 50,000 hours. The ugly truth is that no-name “high brightness” modules start dimming at 3,000 hours and die completely by 12–18 months. You can’t see the difference in a showroom, but you’ll see it when the top of the letter goes dark in January. We warranty our LEDs for two years and power supplies for one. Real-world, they last five.
I’ve seen this go wrong: an importer buys 50 letters for $1,800, pays $600 for “express shipping,” and then gets hit with $900 in customs brokerage, bond fees, destination charges, and a 30% Section 301 tariff. Suddenly the bargain is a wash.
Express (7-10 days) runs $30–100 for small packages, but a full sign set in a wooden crate will cost more. Air freight (about 10 days) bills by weight: $4–12 per kg. Sea freight (about 65 days) charges by volume; LCL is $80–200 per cubic meter, a full container $1,200–3,000. Tariff on Chinese-made signs into the US is roughly 30% of the declared value. I always advise budgeting $500–1,500 extra for destination-side fees unless you have your own broker.

Here’s what nobody tells you: CE marking means the sign meets EU safety rules, but it is not a factory inspection. Any company can issue a CE declaration. We spent 20,000–50,000 RMB getting legitimate CE certification through a notified body. We also hold RoHS and ISO 9001. That’s our baseline.
UL is a different animal. A UL 48 listing for channel letters costs $4,000–$15,000 and takes 4–9 months, plus quarterly audits. I cannot give you a UL-listed sign unless you finance the project file. We can build to UL standards, use UL-recognized components, and assist with your field inspection, but I won’t lie and say we’re “UL certified” for all signs. That’s a rookie trap. For most US outdoor signs, local inspectors accept ETL or just a licensed electrician’s connection to NEC Article 600. Ask your city.
IP ratings matter. IP65 means dust-tight and safe from water jets—minimum for outdoor. IP66 handles powerful jets, good for coastal storms. IP68 means submersible; overkill but useful in flood zones. I test every illuminated sign for 8–12 hours under power before it leaves my factory floor. If it leaks, I find it.
I can ship you the world’s best halo letters, but they’re worthless if they fall off the wall. Installation requires a local sign contractor with insurance, a bucket truck or scaffold, anchors rated for your building’s substrate (brick, EIFS, stucco), and a licensed electrician for wiring. That costs $800–$2,000 per day. A ten-letter installation might take one day, but if the facade is tricky or it’s a second-story mount, plan for two.
ADA tactile signs inside are a separate code issue; for the outdoor storefront, focus on local zoning permits. Many cities require a sign permit that includes engineering calculations. I can provide weight and wind-load data, but I can’t pull your permit. Don’t skip this step; fines are common.

Two: if you need the sign in 10 days, shop local. Air freight can get our product to you fast, but if the shipment gets flagged by customs, you’re stuck. I’d rather you call a sign shop in your town than blame me for a late opening.
