They ask about price per letter and shipping time, which is fine. But they don't ask about the solder joints on the LED modules or the difference between 304 and 316 stainless. Those questions matter more than your freight quote. Ask the wrong one and you'll be re-installing a facade sign in 18 months, eating the cost.

If you're quoting front-lit channel letters for a storefront, ask the supplier what LEDs they're putting inside. That's where the cheap ones die.
I've seen suppliers put no-name 2835 modules in a sign and call it "commercial grade."
SMD 2835 is the industry standard, pushing 100-150 lumens per watt. Quality modules from Samsung, Osram, or Blueview will give you 5+ years of real lifespan, with L70 at 50,000 hours. Cheap modules? 12-18 months before they start flickering. And when they flicker on a sign 20 feet up, the customer doesn't call the LED supplier. They call you. That warranty doesn't cover your ladder time.
Factory-direct can save you 50-65% on product. But that only works if you're not paying for rework after the freight arrives.
Look, I've watched sign shops pay $800 for a front-lit letter from a domestic fabricator. Same 304 stainless, same Samsung LEDs. We ship that letter for $120. But after air freight, tariff, and two hours of local rework, maybe it's $400. Still half. But if you didn't do the math, you'd think the domestic guy's quote was "safer." Not safer.
Color temperature matters more than brightness for most retail jobs. 3000-3500K warm light suits hospitality. 4000-5000K neutral works for corporate and retail. 6000-6500K cool is for industrial and highway. Get it wrong and the brand manager will make you swap every module.
The ugly truth is most buyers spec materials like they're decorating a kitchen.
Stainless steel 304 has 18% chromium and 8% nickel. 304 gives you 10+ years outdoors in most places. But coastal air? You need 316, which adds 2-3% molybdenum for marine-grade corrosion resistance. That upgrade costs 20-30% more. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach, paying for 316 now beats replacing stainless steel letters in three years.
I've seen this go wrong: a fabricator in Tampa ordered 304 stainless for an oceanfront hotel. Saved maybe $400 on the whole order. Two hurricane seasons later, pitting started at the weld seams. The customer made them replace every letter. The replacement cost more than the original job. That's a rookie mistake.
Common stainless thickness runs 1.0 to 3.0 mm. Some suppliers quote 1.0mm and call it heavy-duty. Not heavy-duty.
Finishes are a whole other argument. Brushed #4 hides fingerprints. Mirror #8 shows every smudge. PVD and powder coat let you match brand colors. Cheap shops skip the brush and call it "satin." Ask for a finish sample.
Acrylic matters less than you think for light output, more than you think for yellowing. UV-resistant acrylic from Mitsubishi or Degussa lasts 5-8 years before it starts to haze. Domestic acrylic? 1-2 years. If the sign face is over 2.5 meters, you need 5mm thickness or it'll bow in the heat.
For acrylic LED letters, a 3mm face cuts light output to 92%. A 2mm face takes it to 90%. Your customer won't notice the 2% difference, but they will notice the 40% material cost bump.
Aluminum weighs one-third of steel and lasts 8-12 years outside. Aluminum is rust-proof by nature. For common aluminum, thickness runs 1.0-1.6mm. Anything thinner than 0.040 inches is siding, not signage.
That's why architects keep asking for back-lit halo letters—they hide the light source and look sharp. But if the back plate isn't stiff enough, the whole letter flexes.
Look, certifications are the easiest place to get lied to.
CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks. Most factories will say they have it. Ask them to send the certificate with today's date. Watch them sweat.
If you're selling into the US, NEC Article 600 governs electric signs. UL 48 certification runs $4,000 to $15,000 and takes 4-9 months, plus quarterly audits. Most offshore suppliers don't have UL because they never had to. ETL is a recognized alternative and costs 10-30% less. Don't let a supplier tell you CE is "just as good" for the US market. Different jurisdiction.
Here's a common industry lie: "We use UL-listed components." That doesn't make the sign UL-listed. The sign itself has to be listed. Big difference.
IP65 is the minimum for outdoor signs—it means dust-tight and able to handle water jets from any direction. IP65 won't save a sign from a Florida hurricane. IP66 handles more powerful jets for coastal areas. IP68 is submersible, which is overkill for a fascia sign but nice for a fountain feature.
At our facility, we hold CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001. That's table stakes, not a selling point. When a supplier leads with ISO 9001, ask if they've had a recall in the last five years.
Here's what nobody tells you: your factory price quote is maybe 60% of your actual landed cost.
We keep a 1-piece MOQ at our factory, and standard production runs 7-15 days. That's not magic; it's a 10-step process: laser cutting at ±0.1mm, TIG welding, grinding, CNC acrylic faces, LED assembly, sealing with neutral silicone, then an 8-12 hour aging test and 100% QC. Skip the aging test and you'll get DOA modules.
Express shipping for small signs takes 7-15 days and costs $30-100. Air freight for larger orders is 10-20 days at $4-12 per kilogram. Sea freight for a full crate is 50-70 days at $80-200 per cubic meter LCL. Every LCL crate gets handled 6-8 times between docks. Every touch is a chance for damage. Cardboard boxes don't survive cargo ships. Budget for it.
If you're shipping a full container, FCL runs $1,200-3,000 depending on route and season. Sometimes that's cheaper than LCL once you pass 15 cubic meters. Do the math.
US Section 301 tariffs on Chinese-made signs run around 30%. That's real money. Add it to your freight quote before you compare to a domestic supplier.
Quality control isn't optional. We do 100% inspection before export packaging: foam, carton, plywood crate. If your supplier doesn't show you photos of the crate before it ships, assume it's going in a cardboard box with bubble wrap.
Look, you can't fly to China for every order. But you can demand five things.
First, ask for a live video walkthrough of the factory floor. If they won't do it, move on. Our facility is 3,000 square meters with 50+ workers. You should see laser cutters and TIG welders, not a guy with a grinder in a garage.
Second, request a sample with your exact specs, not a stock photo. Pay for it. A $60 sample letter will tell you more than a 40-page brochure.
Third, ask for the LED module brand and the solder joint condition. Dull gray solder joints mean the modules won't last 18 months. Shiny silver means proper lead-free solder. I've seen this go wrong: a buyer in Germany ordered 2,000 letters without checking the LEDs. They started failing at month 13. The supplier's warranty was 2 years on LEDs, but the freight to return them cost more than the modules.
Fourth, ask for their QC checklist. Ours includes an 8-12 hour aging test, but many don't even do a 10-minute test. If they can't explain their QC process, they don't have one.
Fifth, check the warranty terms. We offer 2 years on LEDs, 1 year on power supplies. If a supplier offers 5 years on everything, they're either lying or they've never had to honor a claim.

Yes. We powder coat and bake paint to any RAL. But don't send me a photo from Pinterest and say "match this." Send a RAL number or a physical swatch. I've had too many "it's like teal but warmer" emails at 11pm.
