They pick a sign based on lumens per module, but what matters is nits at the face, with real-world degradation baked in. Dust, heat, acrylic yellowing, and power supply sag can cut effective brightness by 40% in two years.

A punch hole sign uses individual LED modules mounted through holes drilled in a metal or acrylic face. Each LED pokes through like a tiny spotlight. The result: crisp, high-contrast lettering or graphics, even in direct sunlight.
These are not channel letters, where LEDs sit inside a box and light shines through a translucent face. Punch hole signs are exposedâthe LED itself is the visible light source. Pixel pitch is the center-to-center distance between adjacent LEDs, measured in millimeters. Smaller pitch = higher resolution = shorter minimum viewing distance.
Hereâs the rule of thumb I use:
For a typical storefront sign where customers walk right up to the door, P5 is the sweet spot. You get good clarity for text and simple graphics, but you donât waste money on P3 density (which costs roughly 2x more per square foot).
One more thing: for text-only signs, you can use a larger pitch than for image-based signs. The human brain is remarkably good at reading letters even at lower resolution. But if youâre displaying a logo with fine details or video, stick to P5 or tighter.
Your signâs face and housing determine how long it survives rain, UV, and salt spray. Hereâs what Iâve learned from warranty claims:
Most punch hole signs use acrylic. Quality matters enormously. Mitsubishi or Degussa cast acrylic (90-92% light transmittance, UV-resistant) lasts 5-8 years before yellowing. Domestic acrylic? Youâll see yellowing in 1-2 years. Thatâs a $500-1,500 difference in material cost that saves you a full replacement.
Thickness rule: under 2.5 meters wide, 3mm is fine. Over 2.5 meters, go to 5mm or youâll get sagging and cracking in wind.

Every punch hole sign sold for outdoor use claims âIP65.â But hereâs what that actually means:
The problem: many factories print âIP65â on the label, but the actual seal is cheap silicone that cracks in 6 months. A proper seal uses neutral-cure silicone (not acidic, which corrodes electronics) applied in a controlled thickness, then cured for 24 hours. Dead pixels happen. On a sign with 500 LEDs, expect 1-3 failures per year with quality modules. Cheap modules? 10-15 failures per year.
The fix is straightforward:
Cost per replacement module: $2-5. Labor: 15-30 minutes. Sign shops should stock 10-20 spare modules per sign.
Power supply failures are more serious. A failing supply often shows symptoms: flickering, uneven brightness across the sign, or the sign turning off after 30 minutes of operation. Always replace with the same voltage and at least the same wattage. Never âupgradeâ to a higher wattage supply without checking the LED driver limitsâtoo much current can burn out modules.

P10 (10mm) is fine for 30+ feet. P8 works at 20+ feet. P5 is ideal for 12-20 feetâstorefronts and retail. P3 is for close-up indoor use under 10 feet. A simple rule: multiply pitch in mm by 3 to get the minimum viewing distance in feet. So P5 x 3 = 15 feet minimum.
