What Nobody Tells You About “Cheap” Chinese Signs
I’ve watched sign shops pay $800 for a front-lit channel letter from a U.S. fabricator. Same 304 stainless, same Samsung LEDs. We ship that letter for $120 from our factory in Lu’an, Anhui.
But here’s what nobody tells you: $120 isn’t what you pay. By the time that letter lands on your dock in Houston, you’ve added freight, insurance, customs brokerage, and the Section 301 tariff – about 30% on top of the product value. I’ve seen guys quote a job based on the factory price and then eat a $4,000 LCL sea freight bill because they didn’t read the fine print.
Let’s walk through every layer of the total cost. I’ll use real numbers from my own books – Aochuang Sign, 3,000m² facility, 50+ guys, exports to 21 countries. We’ve been doing this since 2010, so I’ve seen every mistake you can make. I’ve made a few myself.
Factory Price: What You’re Actually Paying For
The factory price on a standard
front-lit channel letter runs $20 to $80 per letter for us. That’s 304 stainless steel face, 3mm domestic acrylic (UV-resistant, good for 5-8 years before yellowing – you want Mitsubishi? Add 40%), SMD 2835 LEDs rated at 100-150 lm/W with L70 ≥50,000 hours.
If you’re spec’ing
316 stainless steel letters for a coastal job, that’s a 20-30% cost premium over 304. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach, pay for 316 or you’re replacing letters in 3 years. I’ve seen it. Don’t cheap out on salt air.
Back-lit halo letters (what we call
back-lit halo letters) run $35-120 per letter at factory. Non-lit stainless $15-40. Aluminum letters $10-25. These are FOB Shenzhen prices – meaning the goods are on the dock, not in your shop.
The ugly truth? Most American sign shops I compete with are adding 300-400% margin on these same letters. Our direct-to-shop price saves you 50-65% on product alone. But you still have to get it here.
Shipping: The Part Everyone Gets Wrong
Here’s the breakdown of how your sign actually travels from China to you.
**Express (FedEx/UPS/DHL):** 7-15 days, $30-100 for small packages under 5kg. Good for prototypes, small orders of mini LED letters, party signs. Our
party light-up letters often go this way.
**Air freight:** 10-20 days, $4-12 per kg. For a 50kg crate of letters, you’re looking at $200-600. Worth it if your customer is breathing down your neck. But air freight triggers customs inspections faster than sea.
**Sea freight LCL (Less than Container Load):** 50-70 days transit, $80-200 per cubic meter. Your crate gets handled 6-8 times between our dock and yours. Every touch is a chance for damage. That’s not in the brochure. I’ve seen crates left in rain, forklift punctures, labels torn off. You have to over-pack. We use foam + carton + plywood crate – but even that won’t save you if the freight forwarder’s warehouse guy drops it from 4 feet.
For a typical 2m³ LCL shipment of 50 front-lit letters: count $160-400 for ocean freight, plus $150-300 for customs clearance, $50-100 for container freight station fees, $100-200 for truck delivery to your shop. You’re at $460-1,000 in logistics alone.
**FCL (Full Container Load):** $1,200-3,000 for a 20-foot container. If you’re ordering 200+ letters or light boxes, this is the way. Lower damage risk. But you need to fill that container, or you’re paying for air.
Here’s a hard truth: don’t trust the freight forwarder’s “door-to-door” estimate without reading the fine print. I’ve seen $300 turn into $900 before the truck even left the port.
Customs and Section 301: The 30% Surprise
The US applies a Section 301 tariff of roughly 30% on most fabricated metal signage from China. That’s on top of the regular duty rate (around 2-4% for “illuminated signs” under HTS 9405.60). You pay the tariff on the FOB value plus shipping and insurance – that's the “dutiable value.”
Let’s do the math for a $2,000 factory order (FOB Shenzhen):
- Freight (LCL, 2m³): $400
- Insurance (0.5%): $10
- CIF value (Cost, Insurance, Freight): $2,410
- Regular duty (3% on $2,410): $72
- Section 301 tariff (30% on $2,410): $723
- Total duties/tariffs: $795
- Customs brokerage fee: $150
- Total landed cost: $2,000 + $400 + $10 + $795 + $150 = **$3,355**
That 65% markup from factory price is the real number I’ve seen sign guys miss. They quote $800 a letter installed, then discover they owe Uncle Sam another 30%. Rookie mistake. It kills margins.
Hidden Costs and Quality Gotchas
I’ve been on the factory floor for 27 years. Here’s what burns most importers.
**LED quality:** Cheap modules with dull-gray solder joints won’t last 18 months. Our SMD 2835 uses proper lead-free solder – shiny silver joints. We run an 8-12 hour aging test before every shipment. Ask your supplier for a closeup photo of the solder joints. If it’s flat gray, run.
**Certifications:** CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB. Most factories will say they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today’s date. Watch them sweat. For the US market, UL 48 costs $4,000-15,000 and takes 4-9 months. ETL is 10-30% cheaper and almost always accepted. Don’t ship without it if your customer requires it.
**Packaging:** Our protocol is foam wrap + individual cartons + plywood crate. We’ve had shipments arrive with crushed corners because the forwarding agent “consolidated” the crate with heavy steel parts. Specify “skid-mounted, no double stacking” in your purchase order.
**Lead time:** We quote 7-15 days production. If your factory promises 5 days, they’re cutting quality or they’re lying. Real production: design confirmation takes 1 day, laser cutting (±0.1mm) 1-2 days, TIG welding 1-2 days, grinding/polishing 1-2 days, acrylic CNC 1 day, LED assembly 1-2 days, sealing 1 day, aging test 1 day. That’s 8-15 days minimum. Don't believe faster.
When Importing Makes Sense – and When It Doesn’t
If you’re doing a single storefront with 10 letters, domestic is faster. But if you’re a shop ordering 20 signs a month, factory-direct saves you $50,000 a year easy.
I’ve seen guys import
rimless channel letters for a national chain and save 60% on product. The key is to order batch – same material, same color temp, same LEDs. We produce 50 identical fronts in half the time it takes to switch setups. That’s why our MOQ is 1 piece but you get the real savings at 20+.
For custom one-offs with PVD finishes or
mirror polished letters, the setup cost might kill the deal. But for standard storefront signs with welded aluminum returns, we’re faster and cheaper than any local shop I know.
One more thing: never, ever send a deposit without a signed contract that lists the exact materials and lead time. I’ve seen guys lose $10k on a “too good to be true” price.
Frequently Annoyed Questions
How do I know if the factory is legit?
Ask for a video call of the production floor. Real factories don’t hide. Look for laser cutters, a TIG welding station, an aging test rack. If they only show an office, walk. We’re ISO 9001 certified – you can check that online. But
