The best sign for a convenience store is almost never one sign. You need a two-part system: a pylon or monument sign out by the road, and front-lit channel letters on the building. If you only buy one sign, buy the pylon. Leave the storefront dark.
Here's what nobody tells you: the sign your customer sees first is the one that matches their speed and sightline.
A c-store on a 40+ MPH road needs cool white 6000–6500K LEDs. That's the industrial/highway color temp. Warm 3000–3500K looks cozy on a boutique, but from a car at 11pm, it reads like a dim blob. Don't fight the physics. Pylon first, storefront letters second, window and directional third.
I've seen this go wrong: a guy in Ohio spent $8,000 on warm white backlit letters for a corner store. Beautiful sign. Couldn't read it from the road. Six months later he's calling about a pylon.
Look, for the building itself, channel letters beat a cabinet lightbox nine times out of ten.
Front-lit letters cost $1.05–$1.35 per cm for stainless trim plus an acrylic face. A 30cm letter runs $31.50–$40.50. A 40cm double-sided lightbox is $75. The lightbox looks cheaper until you're lifting it onto a bracket.
Channel letters also use SMD 2835 modules at 100–150 lm/W. Spec Bluesky or Rishang, and you get 5+ years of real lifespan. Cheap modules with dull gray solder joints die in 12–18 months. Most lightboxes look easier to service because they've got one face. That's backwards. When a module dies in a channel letter, you replace one letter. When a module dies in a cabinet, you open the whole face on a ladder at midnight.
Pylon signs are custom jobs. If you're buying a double-sided cabinet, the lightbox itself runs $300 for a 100–120cm diameter before steel and install.
The part most folks skip? The steel. 304 stainless has 18% chromium and 8% nickel, density 7.93g/cm³, and a 10+ year outdoor life. 316 adds 2–3% molybdenum for coastal and industrial air, but it costs 20–30% more. If your store sits in Miami Beach, pay for stainless steel letters in 316. If you're in Ohio, 304 is fine.

Most c-stores don't need a digital message center. You need one if you change gas prices daily or run weekly promos. If the sign says “Open 24 Hours” for six months straight, you overpaid.
A real digital board uses SMD 5050 modules if it's RGB, or SMD 5730 at 40–60 lm per chip for maximum brightness. The LED L70 rating should be at least 50,000 hours. Cheap boards with dull solder joints will fail in 12–18 months. That's the difference between a sign and a disposable light toy.
Look, canopy and window signs are where you make the impulse sale. A customer at the pump sees the window sign for a $1.99 slushie. That sign doesn't need to be huge. It needs to be bright and readable.
Use UV-resistant acrylic. Mitsubishi or Degussa sheet runs 5–8 years before yellowing. Domestic acrylic yellows in 1–2 years. Cheap acrylic is a false economy. At 90–92% light transmittance, 5mm acrylic is our default face, and it won't kill your budget. For window or directional acrylic LED letters, that's the spec you want.
For directional signs, ADA compliance isn't optional in the US. Tactile signs mount 48–60 inches, non-glare, Grade 2 Braille. Miss that and you're redoing the whole wall.
A sign shop once told a client “CE certified” covers US electrical. It doesn't. In the US, NEC Article 600 applies, and UL 48 is the certification your inspector wants. UL 48 runs $4,000–15,000 and takes 4–9 months with quarterly audits.
CE marking costs 20,000–50,000 RMB and takes 2–8 weeks. ETL is 10–30% cheaper than UL. Ask for the certificate with today's date. If they flinch, walk.
IP65 is dust-tight and handles water jets from any direction. That's the minimum for outdoor. IP66 is for coastal wind-driven rain. IP68 is submersible—not something your c-store needs unless it floats.
For an urban storefront with a parking lot, go with front-lit channel letters. Stainless trim with an acrylic face runs $1.05–$1.35/cm. Baked-paint stainless letters are $0.90–$1.05/cm if you need to save a few bucks.

Why are channel letters priced per centimeter? Because height drives material, LED count, and acrylic face. A 10cm letter and a 60cm letter aren't the same job. That's how pricing works in China, and it's how you should bid it.
Can I install a pylon sign myself to save money? You can also pull your own teeth. Doesn't mean it's smart. Code, wind load, and electrical kill DIY pylon jobs.
