Here's what nobody tells you: most "custom sign" requests are just three or four material combinations. Once you know the specs, you can compare any factory quote against real costs. Don't let a salesman blur the details.
For outdoor storefronts, your core options are front-lit channel letters — the industry workhorse — or back-lit halo letters for that premium architectural glow. Metal letters? Go stainless steel for durability or aluminum if weight matters. Need a quick visual punch? Check acrylic light boxes or neon flex signs.
But here's the number that matters: acrylic transmittance. Domestic Chinese acrylic gives you 90-92% light transmittance, but it starts yellowing in 1-2 years. Mitsubishi or Degussa UV-resistant acrylic? 5-8 years. If a factory quotes you a cheap sign, ask which acrylic they're using. The price difference is small. The yellowing difference is huge.
Alibaba is a starting point, not a destination. Search "LED sign manufacturer" and you'll get 10,000 results, half of which are traders with a warehouse and a website. The real factories have certifications you can verify, a physical address that maps to a factory, and they don't panic when you ask for a video call on the production floor.
I've seen this go wrong: a customer in Texas ordered 50 channel letters from a "factory" that turned out to be a trading company. The signs arrived with cheap LED modules that died in 14 months. The trader disappeared. Always ask for three things before any quote:
The ugly truth is: CE marking is not the badge of quality most buyers think it is. A CE certificate costs 20,000-50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks. Most factories have one. That doesn't mean every component inside the sign is CE-listed. Ask to see the certificate. Then ask if the LED modules and power supply have their own certificates. Most won't have an answer.
For the US market, UL 48 is the big one — but it costs $4,000-15,000 and 4-9 months of quarterly audits. That's why many Chinese factories don't have it. ETL is a legitimate UL alternative, usually 10-30% cheaper. If someone quotes you a UL-listed sign but can't show the file number, walk away.
Also understand IP ratings. IP65 for outdoor is the minimum — dust-tight and water jets. IP66 handles powerful jets, IP68 is submersible. IP65 does NOT mean your sign survives a Florida hurricane. I've seen this go wrong: a coastal customer bought IP65 signs, a storm blew saltwater spray into the seams, and the power supply burned out in a month. For coastal installations, use 316 stainless steel — it has 2-3% molybdenum and lasts 15+ years. 304 is fine for inland, but don't risk it by the ocean.
Here's what nobody tells you: the "factory-direct 50% savings" you see in ads is real, but only if you're comparing apples to apples. US retail installed runs $200-700 per letter for front-lit. Factory price is $20-80 per letter. The gap is labor, overhead, markup, and installation. Don't expect to pay $20 and get a $700 install quality — you're buying the component, not the service.

That's for quality materials — 304 stainless with a brushed #4 finish, SMD 2835 LEDs at 100-150 lm/W, and proper sealing. If a quote comes in 40% below these numbers, ask what got cut. Often it's the LED brand. Cheap modules last 12-18 months. Quality modules from Samsung, Osram, or Blueview run 5+ years with L70 at 50,000 hours. The difference on a 20-letter sign is maybe $80. That's nothing compared to a re-install.

Sea freight takes 50-70 days — LCL costs $80-200 per cubic meter, FCL runs $1,200-3,000 per container. And don't forget the US Section 301 tariff: roughly 30%. Factor that into your landed cost before you compare against domestic quotes.

We can handle UL-style engineering reviews, but we're not currently UL-certified for every product line. If you need a full UL 48 listing on a custom sign, that's a 4-9 month project with $4,000-15,000 in testing costs. We can do it, but it's not the right move for a single test order.
We also don't do architectural-grade custom sculpture or massive architectural sign structures over 10 meters. That's a different factory with different tooling. Know your scope before you send an RFQ. If you send us a project that's outside our line, we'll tell you flat-out — and point you toward someone who can handle it. One more honest note: our warranty is 2 years on LEDs, 1 year on power supplies. That's standard. What's not standard is how we handle claims.
