I've spent 16 years on a factory floor in Lu'an, Anhui. I've burned my hands on hot acrylic and argued with LED suppliers about lumen ratings that were pure fantasy. If you're comparison shopping for custom metal signs, you need less sales talk and more hard numbers. Here's the version I'd give you over a beer.

Look, factory direct isn't a magic trick. It's just removing three middlemen who each add 30-50%. Aochuang Sign runs a 3,000mΒ² facility with 50+ workers and ships worldwide. Our minimum order is one piece. That's not a typo.

Here's what nobody tells you: most local sign shops are buying from factories like ours anyway. They just don't tell their clients. A "custom fabricated" stainless sign in Dallas is probably welded in China, packed in a crate, and marked up four times before it touches your building.

What "factory direct" actually gets you

You get our price per letter, not the retail installed price.

A stainless steel non-lit letter from us runs $15-40. A front-lit channel letter from us runs $20-80. The same letter installed by a US sign company? $200-700 for front-lit. $400-1,000 for back-lit halo. That's a 50-65% gap before shipping and tariffs, and it's real.

You also get a production process that ends in an 8-12 hour aging test and 100% QC inspection. Every sign we ship goes out in foam, carton, and a plywood crate. No bubble wrap and a prayer.

Our 10-step process: design confirmation in one day, laser cutting with Β±0.1mm accuracy, TIG welding, grinding and polishing, acrylic face CNC if needed, LED assembly, sealing with neutral silicone, 8-12 hour aging test, 100% QC, export packaging. That's why lead time is 7-15 days, not 30.

Certifications: CE, RoHS, ISO 9001. CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks. If a factory can't show you a certificate with today's date, they don't have it.

Stainless steel letters: where 304 stops and 316 starts

If you're pricing stainless steel letters, ask two questions before you compare quotes. What grade? What thickness? If the factory can't answer both in ten seconds, walk.

304 stainless is the workhorse. 18% chromium, 8% nickel. Ten-plus years outdoors in normal weather. Common thickness is 1.0-3.0mm. Brushed #4 or mirror #8 finish. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine.

316 stainless is marine grade. It contains 2-3% molybdenum, which is what keeps salt air from pitting the surface. You pay a 20-30% premium over 304. For Miami Beach or any building within five miles of salt water, pay it. Don't argue.

I've seen this go wrong: a customer ordered 30-inch stainless letters for a seafood restaurant in Galveston. They looked great for eight months. Then the salt started eating the welds because someone used a cheap alloy and
