Stainless steel letters in 304 last 10+ years outdoors. That's our default for non-lit building signs. 316 stainless costs 20-30% more and has molybdenum. It survives salt spray. Use it within 5 miles of the coast.
Acrylic faces with Mitsubishi or Degussa UV-resistant sheet stay clear for 5-8 years. Domestic acrylic starts yellowing in 1-2 years. For anything over 2.5 meters wide, use 5mm or thicker. Don't cheap out here. The face is the first thing customers see.
Aluminum weighs a third of steel. It's naturally rust-proof and lasts 8-12 years. It's a smart choice for large channel letters or light boxes where weight matters.
If you're deciding between lighting, our front-lit channel letters are the storefront standard. Back-lit halo letters cost more but make a premium architectural statement. Both use SMD 2835 LEDs with L70 ≥50,000 hours if you spec Samsung or Osram modules.
Front-lit letters run $20-80 per letter from a factory. Back-lit halo letters $35-120 per letter. That's before shipping and tariff. US retail installed? $200-700 for front-lit, $400-1,000 for halo. The difference is real.
Color temperature matters. Warm 3000-3500K fits hospitality. Neutral 4000-5000K is corporate and retail. Cool 6000-6500K works for industrial and highway signs. Pick wrong and the sign looks cheap or wrong for the brand.
Here's what nobody tells you: cheap LED modules fail in 12-18 months. Quality modules last 5+ years real lifespan. The invoice looks better until you're paying a lift rental to replace letters 18 months later.
For exterior, IP65 is the minimum. IP66 for coastal or high-pressure wash areas. IP68 for locations that get submerged. Don't accept "waterproof" as a spec. Ask for the IP rating.
I've seen this go wrong: a client ordered brushed stainless letters for a Miami Beach building. We shipped 304 because they didn't mention the ocean. Six months later, pitting. Had they told us "coastal," we'd have spec'd 316. Pay attention to your location.
Mounting flush on a flat wall is simple. Mounting on brick, stucco, or corrugated metal changes hardware. If the sign goes above 10 feet, we need to know access. Cranes and lifts cost money.
For exterior use, every sign needs sealing with neutral silicone. We do that on every channel letter. We also run an 8-12 hour aging test on every light box. If a factory skips that, you'll get condensation in the face and dead LEDs.
