What MOQ 1 Actually Means on the Factory Floor
Here’s what nobody tells you: when you order one piece, you’re standing in the way of a production line built for efficiency. Our laser cutters don’t care if they’re spitting out parts for 200 letters or 2 letters—the machine setup time is identical. We still fire up the TIG welder for that single stainless steel return, still run the CNC to carve one acrylic face, still mix the same batch of paint for your specific RAL color.
A 3,000m² facility with 50+ people doesn’t switch to “small order mode.” It just absorbs the labor cost. At least up to a point.

The Dirty Secret Behind That $50 Single Letter
I’ve watched sign shops pay $800 for a front-lit letter from a domestic fabricator. Same 304 stainless, same Samsung LEDs. We ship that letter for $120. So when you see a factory offering one letter for $29, your scam detector should be screaming.
Here’s what they’re actually sending you: domestic-grade acrylic that’ll yellow in 18 months instead of the Mitsubishi or Degussa UV-resistant stuff that holds up 5-8 years outdoors. LED modules from a Shenzhen back alley—dull gray solder joints that’ll start flickering before the year is out, not the shiny lead-free contacts on Samsung or Osram chips rated L70 at 50,000 hours. 0.6mm stainless steel that dents if you look at it wrong, not the 1.0–3.0mm 304 alloy that survives a decade outdoors.
Look, the quickest way to spot bad LED modules: open the letter and look at the solder joints. Dull gray means that power supply won't see its second birthday. Shiny silver means proper lead-free soldering. I’ve cracked open enough “bargain” signs to know which one ends up in the dumpster.
If someone’s giving away a single sign, they’re making their margin on the shipping—or on the words they left out of the specification sheet.
When Ordering One Sign Makes Sense (And When It Doesn’t)
I’ve seen this go wrong: a small business owner orders one 4-foot acrylic channel letter, painted custom PMS 185 red, with an internal LED layout that needs to hit 6500K cool white. They pay $80 for the letter. They pay $130 for express shipping to get it in 10 days. The crate arrives cracked because LCL sea freight means that box got handled between six and eight times. The power supply fails three months later because it was a generic 12V brick that cost $2.70 to manufacture.
The sign cost $80. The real cost to fix it? Lost hours, angry customer, and a replacement they could’ve had right the first time from a shop that actually tests its supplies through an 8-12 hour aging bench before packing.
So when does one-off ordering work? When you need a single
acrylic LED letter to match an existing set and the original installer went out of business. When the hotel lobby needs one back-lit halo letter that has to be exactly 316 marine-grade stainless because it’s going on a boardwalk in Miami Beach—and the 20–30% material premium is cheaper than failing a building inspection. When you’re prototyping a new storefront and need to show a physical sample to the owner before committing to 20 letters.
For a one-off, you swallow the minimum shipping charge and you spec the materials like your reputation depends on it. Because it does.
How a Chinese Factory Ships a Single Sign Across the Ocean Without Breaking It
Here’s something the cheap guys won’t show you: our export packaging for a single letter uses foam, a heavy corrugated carton, and then a custom-built plywood crate. Even for one piece. That crate gets strapped and labeled like it’s going to the moon.
The timeline is tight. Design confirmation takes a day. Laser cutting stainless or acrylic runs one to two days. TIG welding, grinding, and polishing another couple of days. CNC face routing, LED assembly with neutral-cure silicone sealing—everything still moves through the same 10-step process whether it’s 1 sign or 50. Total: 7 to 15 days for most orders.
We put every completed sign through a full 8-12 hour burn-in test. Single letter or not. It’s not negotiable. If a power supply flickers on hour nine, we catch it before that crate leaves Anhui.
CE certification? That costs 20,000–50,000 RMB and takes a couple weeks. A factory that really has it can show you the certificate with today’s date. Ask for it. Watch the ones who don’t sweat.
Same goes for UL 48 if you’re in the US—that’s a $4,000–$15,000 process with quarterly audits. A small factory shipping one sign to Cleveland isn’t likely to have it. We’re honest about what we carry (CE, RoHS, ISO 9001) and what that means for your local electrical inspector. If you need ETL or UL, we’ll say so upfront and walk you through what that costs. Transparency keeps people out of court.
Real Material Specs That Separate a Sign From Garbage
Let’s talk materials like grown adults who actually have to install this stuff.
304 stainless steel: 18% chromium, 8% nickel, density 7.93 g/cm³. Outdoors, 10-plus years with no real degradation unless you’re right on the ocean. For that, 316 with 2–3% molybdenum buys you 15-plus years. A 20–30% cost bump, and for a single letter, that might mean $6 extra. Do it. Your customer won’t know what “intergranular corrosion” is, but they’ll definitely notice rust blooms on a beachfront sign.
Acrylic faces: 90–92% light transmittance on good stuff. A 3mm face blocks about 8% of the LED output. A 2mm face blocks about 10%. The 2% difference is invisible to the naked eye, but the cost bump for 3mm is real. If a letter is smaller than 2.5 meters, 2mm is structurally fine. Over that, step up to 5mm or you’ll get sagging and cracks in the first seasonal temperature swing.
LED modules: SMD 2835 chips running 100–150 lumens per watt are the industry standard for channel letters. SMD 5050 if you need RGB. SMD 5730 for maximum punch—40–60 lumens per chip, which is overkill for most indoor signage but perfect for a highway pylon. Quality modules from Samsung or Osram have a real-world lifespan of 5-plus years. Cheap ones last 12–18 months and then you’re on a scissor lift in January.
