MOQ 1 Piece Isn't a Gimmick – But You Need to Know What You're Getting
I've been on this factory floor since 1998. I've watched China morph from "cheap junk" to "surprisingly good" to "holy crap, that's better than my local guy." The MOQ 1 piece thing? Ten years ago it was a marketing stunt. Now it's real — but only if you're dealing with a shop that's set up for it.
We don't do it as a loss leader. We do it because CNC lasers don't care if you're cutting one letter or a hundred. Setup time is the same. Material waste is the same. So why not take the single-letter job? A 3,000m² factory with 50 workers can accommodate that without breaking sweat. The ugly truth is most American sign shops can't touch that price point because their overhead is built for runs of 20+.
Look, I've watched sign shops pay $800 for a single front-lit channel letter from a domestic fabricator. Same 304 stainless. Same Samsung LEDs. We ship that letter for $120. That's not a typo. That's the difference between a factory that buys 10,000 sheets of acrylic a month versus a shop that buys 20.
What "Low Minimum" Actually Means in Production
Here's what nobody tells you: the 7-15 day lead time starts when your design confirmation hits the production manager's desk, not when you send the inquiry. That's the difference between pro and amateur.
Our process for a single letter goes like this: design confirmation (1 day) → laser cutting to ±0.1mm (1-2 days) → TIG welding and bending (1-2 days) → grinding and polishing (1-2 days) → CNC routing the acrylic face (1 day) → LED assembly with SMD 2835 modules (1-2 days) → sealing with neutral silicone (1 day) → 8-12 hour aging test → 100% QC inspection → foam + carton + plywood crate. That's ten steps, each one necessary. If a factory tells you they can do it in 5 days, they're skipping steps.
The LED modules we use? SMD 2835, 100-150 lm/W. That's the industry standard for good reason. But the cheap guys use the same chip with dull solder joints. Quickest way to spot bad LEDs: look at the solder. Dull gray = won't last 18 months. Shiny silver = proper lead-free solder. Every module we ship gets the shine.
If you're ordering
front-lit channel letters for a storefront, you want that 2mm acrylic face (90% light transmittance) over 3mm (92%) unless the letter is over 2.5 meters tall. Your customer won't notice the 2% difference, but they will notice the 40% cost bump. That's a hard fact, not a guess.
The Numbers That Matter – Pricing, Tariffs, and the Real Savings
Factory price for a front-lit channel letter: $20-80. Back-lit halo: $35-120. Stainless steel non-lit: $15-40. 3D fabricated: $40-120. Aluminum: $10-25. These are per-letter prices. US retail installed? $200-700 per letter for front-lit. $400-1,000 for halo-lit. You're saving 50-65% on the product.
The ugly truth is shipping eats some of that. For a small order, express courier (7-15 days) runs $30-100. Air freight (10-20 days) is $4-12/kg. Sea freight (50-70 days) is $80-200 per cubic meter for LCL. And here's what nobody tells you about LCL: your crate gets handled 6-8 times between our dock and yours. Every touch is a chance for damage. That's not in the brochure.
Then there's Section 301 tariffs — roughly 30% on finished signs. It's a pain, but even after shipping and duty, you're still 20-30% ahead of domestic fabrication. If you're doing volume, sea freight + tariff still beats local pricing.
Look, I've seen this go wrong: a guy ordered 20 letters, paid express air, forgot about the tariff, and his total cost was only 15% under local. He still saved money. But he was pissed because he didn't do the math. Do the math.
Certifications: Don't Get Fooled by the Stamps
Every Chinese factory will tell you they have CE. CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB (roughly $3,000-7,000). Most factories will say they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today's date. Watch them sweat. We have CE. We have RoHS. We have ISO 9001. And if you're shipping to the US, you should know: UL is $4,000-15,000 and takes 4-9 months. ETL is 10-30% cheaper and is accepted by most AHJs.
IP65 sounds impressive. It means dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction. It does NOT mean your sign survives a Florida hurricane. For coastal areas, you want IP66 or even IP68. And for marine environments? Don't even think about 304 stainless. Use
316 stainless steel letters with 2-3% molybdenum. Costs 20-30% more. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach, pay for 316 or you're replacing letters in 3 years.
I've watched a shop lose a hotel contract because they used IP65-rated letters on a beachfront property. Six months in, the seals failed. Water ingress killed the LEDs. That was a $15,000 mistake.
Materials: Stop Over-Spec'ing and Start Thinking
Acrylic from Mitsubishi or Degussa — UV-resistant for 5-8 years. Domestic acrylic? 1-2 years before yellowing. The price difference? Maybe 20%. The lifespan difference? 300% minimum. For outdoor signs, never cheap out on acrylic.
Same with LED modules. Quality modules from Samsung, Osram, or 蓝景 (that's the Chinese brand we use that actually lasts) — guaranteed 5+ years real lifespan. Cheap modules? 12-18 months. The difference in cost is about $0.50 per module. The cost to replace a sign on a building? A few thousand. You do the math.
For weight considerations: aluminum is 1/3 the weight of steel. Works great for large-format signs or wall-mounts where structure matters. But for that premium architectural look,
back-lit halo letters in stainless steel are the way to go. They're heavier, but the 10+ year outdoor life is worth it.
What Your Job Is After You Order
Here's what nobody tells you: the factory does its part — 100% QC, aging test, export packaging. Your job starts when the crate arrives. LCL freight means your crate is handled six times. Inspect it before you accept. Open it within 24 hours. Test every LED module with a power supply, not just a visual check.
You also need to handle mounting. We give you the backing plate with pre-drilled holes. ASTM standard. But if your wall isn't flat, your letters will look like crap. Use stand-offs if needed. And make sure your electrician knows: NEC Article 600 governs sign wiring in the US. Class 2 power supplies, proper conduit, ground fault protection.
The MOQ 1 piece model only works if you do your homework. Provide vector artwork, not JPEGs. Confirm the mounting surface material. FAQ – Stuff I Still Have to Explain
Q: Can I really get one LED letter for my home office?
Yeah. We do it all the time. Mini LED letters, tiny acrylic, whatever. But don't expect express shipping to cost less than the letter itself. A $25 letter shipped overnight is $100. That's just reality.
Q: How do I know you won't use knock-off LEDs?
You don't. That's why you ask for a photo of the modules before they're installed. We'll send it. If the factory hesitates, run. Also, check the solder joints. Shiny silver = good. Dull gray = garbage. That's universal.
Q: Is sea freight really worth the wait?
For 50+ letters, yes. For 1 letter, no. Use express for small orders. The 50-70 day sea freight is fine for container loads or big light boxes. But for a single custom sign, it's stupid. You'll forget you ordered it.
Q: What about that "free design" offer from other factories?
It's never free. They'll charge you in the material spec or the shipping. I've seen them upsell you to 3mm acrylic when 2mm would do. Or use domestic acrylic instead of UV-stable. Free design means they design it to cost them the least, not to last you the longest. Pay for a design fee. Or send us a sketch. We'll CNC it.
