Custom Metal Signage Wholesale: A No-BS Buyer's Guide

Look, you're not buying a widget. You're buying something that'll be bolted to a building for ten years.

I'm a 52-year-old factory guy from Lu'an, Anhui. I've burned my hands on hot acrylic and argued with suppliers about LED quality more times than I can count. I run production at Aochuang Sign, a 3,000m² shop with 50+ workers. We ship worldwide.

Here's what nobody tells you: the US retail price for installed channel letters is $200-700 per letter. Our factory price for a non-lit stainless steel letter is $15-40. The difference isn't magic. It's the middleman.

The Real Cost of Custom Metal Signage Wholesale

We make stainless steel letters starting at $15 per letter. Not per inch. Per letter. Same with aluminum letters at $10-25. That's factory-direct pricing with no US distributor markup.

Now let's be clear about what that buys.

$15 gets you a fabricated 304 stainless letter, welded, ground, polished. $40 gets you the same with better finish, maybe thicker material, more complex shape. You're not paying for a name. You're paying for labor and metal.

Here's the ugly truth: some shops sell "stainless steel" that's actually 201 grade. 201 has 1% nickel instead of 8%. It rusts in two years outdoors. I've seen a contractor order 201 because it was 20% cheaper. Two years later, rust streaks on a white stucco wall. He paid triple to replace.

Factory-direct savings on product run 50-65% versus US retail. That's after you pay shipping and tariff. I did the math on a 20-letter stainless job: US retail $4,000. Our factory price $800. Shipping and tariff $500. Landed $1,300. You saved $2,700.

Materials: What Lasts, What Rots

304 stainless is the workhorse. 18% chromium, 8% nickel. 10+ year outdoor life. It's what we use for 90% of exterior metal signage. Our standard thickness is 1.0-3.0mm. Over 1.5m tall, we recommend 2.0mm minimum so it doesn't warp.

316 stainless is marine grade. 2-3% molybdenum. 15+ years in coastal air. It costs 20-30% more than 304. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach, pay for 316.

Aluminum letters weigh one-third of steel. Naturally rust-proof. 8-12 year outdoor life. But aluminum dents easier. If a kid can reach it, go stainless.

High-end lobbies might justify brass letters for that warm premium look. Brass isn't cheap, but it lasts decades indoors. We don't list a fixed price because alloy and finish change everything. Ask for a quote.

One more thing: thickness. Common stainless is 1.0-3.0mm. If your letters are over 1.5m tall, don't go below 2.0mm. I've had customers ask for 3m letters in 1.2mm stainless to save $200. The letters oil-can in the wind. I refused that order. Good sign shops refuse bad specs.
