Stainless Steel: 304 vs 316 – Don’t Guess
Look, I’ve seen guys spec 316 stainless for a sign going up in Denver. That’s 20-30% more money for zero benefit. 304 stainless has 18% chromium, 8% nickel. Outdoor life: 10+ years easy. In most of the US, that’s overkill for storefronts. But if you’re on the coast – Miami Beach, Galveston, any salt spray zone – you need 316. That extra 2-3% molybdenum gives you 15+ years. I’ve watched property managers skip it, then replace letters in 3 years. Don’t be that guy.
We stock both. Common thicknesses: 1.0mm to 3.0mm. Finishes: brushed #4, mirror #8, PVD, powder coated. For a luxury retail tenant that wants that mirror look, spec the
stainless steel letters with #8 finish. For a strip mall with standard baked paint, go with 304 and save the budget.
Brutal honest moment: most suppliers will quote you “stainless steel” without telling you the grade. Ask. If they can’t say 304 or 316 in the first sentence, walk. We print the grade on every invoice.
LED Modules: You’re Being Sold Junk
The quickest way to spot bad LED modules: look at the solder joints. Dull gray = won’t last 18 months. Shiny silver = proper lead-free solder. Cheap modules use lower-grade chips that hit L70 at 50,000 hours on paper, but real-world they’re dead in 12-18 months. Quality modules – Samsung, Osram, or Lian Jing (that’s our preferred Chinese brand) – will last 5+ years. We only use those. I’ve argued with suppliers about this for a decade.
For front-lit letters, stick with SMD 2835. 100-150 lumens per watt. That’s the industry standard. For RGB, go SMD 5050. If you need maximum brightness, SMD 5730 – 40-60 lumens per chip, but it runs hotter. Color temperature matters: 3000-3500K for hospitality, 4000-5000K for corporate/retail, 6000-6500K for industrial or highway. Most contractors screw this up and order cool white for a steakhouse. Your client will notice. They won’t know why, but they’ll blame you.
Shipping, Tariffs, and the Hidden Costs That Will Burn You
Here’s what nobody tells you: LCL sea freight is a nightmare. Your crate gets handled 6-8 times between our dock and yours. Every touch is a chance for damage. That’s not in the brochure. If you’re ordering less than a full container, think hard about packaging. We use foam, then carton, then plywood crate. 100% QC inspection before it leaves. But once it hits the dock, it’s out of our hands.
Shipping costs: express small letters – $30-100, 7-15 days. Air freight – $4-12 per kg, 10-20 days. Sea LCL – $80-200 per cubic meter, 50-70 days. Full container – $1,200-3,000 depending on port. The US Section 301 tariff adds about 30% on top. Yes, that hurts. But factor it in, and you’re still saving 50-65% compared to domestic. I’ve seen the math a thousand times.
The rookie mistake: ignoring the tariff. Some factories will quote you without it, then you get a surprise at customs. We quote FOB or CIF with the tariff line item. You know upfront. No surprises.
Certifications: Don’t Take Their Word for It
CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB. Most factories will say they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today’s date. Watch them sweat. We have CE, RoHS, ISO 9001. For US jobs, UL 48 is the gold standard – but it costs $4,000-15,000 and takes 4-9 months. Not every project needs it. ETL is a valid alternative, 10-30% cheaper. For outdoor signs, minimum IP65: dust-tight and water jets from any direction. But IP65 does NOT mean your sign survives a Florida hurricane. For coastal, spec IP66 (powerful jets) or IP68 (submersible). I’ve seen guys lose entire jobs because they thought IP65 was “waterproof.” It’s not.
NEC Article 600 applies to all US electrical signs. ADA requires tactile signs mounted 48-60 inches, non-glare finish, Grade 2 Braille. If you’re doing a
back-lit halo letter for a hotel lobby, make sure the mounting height is right. I’ve had to re-make signs because a property manager measured from the floor instead of the center of the sign. Pay attention.
How to Actually Work With a Chinese Factory (Without Getting Burned)
Don’t be the guy who emails 20 factories and picks the cheapest quote. That sign will look like garbage. We have a 10-step production process: design confirmation (1 day), laser cutting (±0.1mm, 1-2 days), bending/welding (TIG, 1-2 days), grinding/polishing (1-2 days), acrylic face CNC (1 day), LED assembly (1-2 days), sealing with neutral silicone (1 day), 8-12 hour aging test, 100% QC inspection, export packaging. Total: 7-15 days. If a factory says they can do it in 3 days, they’re skipping steps.
For acrylic faces: Mitsubishi or Degussa material – 90-92% light transmittance, UV-resistant, 5-8 years before yellowing. Domestic acrylic: 1-2 years. We use the good stuff. Thickness: 2mm for most, 3mm for larger faces, 5mm for anything over 2.5 meters. A 3mm face cuts 92% light output. A 2mm face cuts 90%. Your customer won’t notice the 2% but they will notice the 40% cost bump. Pick cheaper acrylic if budget is tight. But don’t blame me when it yellows in 18 months.

How long does a custom metal sign really take?
Don’t call me on a Friday asking for next week. Our lead time is 7-15 days. That’s 7 days for simple front-lit channel letters, 15 for complex halo-lit or stainless steel with PVD. If you need it faster, you’re paying for air freight. You’re not getting a miracle. Plan your project, order early. Contractors who rush pay double.
What’s the difference between IP65 and IP66?
IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction. IP66 means powerful jets – think pressure washer from 3 meters. For a covered storefront, IP65 is fine. For a sign over a beachfront restaurant, IP66 minimum. IP68 means submersible – for signs in flood zones or under water. Most property managers don’t need it. But if you’re in hurricane country, invest in IP66 or 68. I’ve seen IP65 signs fill with water after one storm.
Do I really need UL certification?
Only if your local inspector demands it, or your insurance company. If you’re doing a national retail chain, they’ll require UL. For a mom-and-pop property, ETL is fine and costs less. We can do either. But be ready for the timeline: UL takes 4-9 months and costs $4,000-15,000. Plan ahead. Don’t expect a UL sticker on a 7-day order. All our LEDs and power supplies are CE and RoHS, which meets most code requirements outside the US.
Can you match a specific RAL color?
Yes. We do baked paint in any RAL color you want. Also powder coated. For stainless steel, we offer #4 brushed, #8 mirror, PVD coating, or electroplated gold/chrome. If you want a luxury look, spec electroplated. If you want industrial, powder coat over aluminum. Aluminum is 1/3 the weight of steel, naturally rust-proof, and lasts 8-12 years outdoors.
