Acrylic handles UV differently depending on quality. Mitsubishi or Degussa UV-resistant sheet lasts 5 to 8 years outdoors. Cheap domestic acrylic? 1 to 2 years before yellowing. We're talking 90 to 92 percent light transmittance, but thickness matters: 2mm and 3mm are common, and anything over 2.5 meters needs 5mm or thicker or it's a sail in the wind. A 3mm acrylic face transmits 92 percent of the light, a 2mm face transmits 90 percent. Your customer won't notice the 2 percent difference. They will notice a warped face.
Aluminum is the unsung workhorse. Weight is one-third of steel, outdoor life 8 to 12 years, and it's naturally rust-proof. We use 1.0 to 1.6 millimeter sheet, anodized, powder coated, or brushed. For flat signs, aluminum is fine. For structural letters, don't expect it to carry heavy glass or a big return.
Stainless steel is where durability lives. 304 stainless steel letters give you 10+ years outdoors, 18 percent chromium, 8 percent nickel. Coastal or industrial? 316 has 2 to 3 percent molybdenum and a 15+ year marine grade life. It costs 20 to 30 percent more. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach, pay for 316 or you're replacing letters in three years. I've seen this go wrong too many times.
LEDs. SMD 2835 is the industry standard at 100 to 150 lumens per watt. 5050 is RGB capable. 5730 hits 40 to 60 lumens per chip, highest brightness. L70 rating of 50,000 hours is the baseline. Quality modules from Samsung, Osram, or Blueview last 5+ years real lifespan. Cheap modules? 12 to 18 months, dull gray solder joints. Quickest way to spot bad LED modules: look at the solder. Dull gray means it won't last. Shiny silver is proper lead-free solder. For acrylic LED letters, the acrylic face and LED module choice decide whether the sign looks crisp or like a dying glow stick.
UL 48 certification costs $4,000 to $15,000 and takes 4 to 9 months with quarterly audits. ETL is a recognized alternative and runs 10 to 30 percent cheaper. You can't skip either if you're installing in the US.
Here's what nobody tells you: CE marking costs 20,000 to 50,000 RMB. Most factories say they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today's date. Watch them sweat. Same with RoHS.
IP ratings aren't marketing. IP65 means dust-tight and protected from water jets from any direction. That's minimum outdoor. IP66 adds powerful jets, good for coastal. IP68 is submersible, but that doesn't mean your sign survives a Florida hurricane. Don't confuse a rating with a guarantee.
For US electrical, NEC Article 600 governs signs. If your supplier doesn't know that code, find one who does. ADA tactile signs need mounting height between 48 and 60 inches, non-glare finish, and Grade 2 Braille. That's federal, not a suggestion.
A broker doesn't have a factory. They have a phone and a markup. No joke.

Total cost of ownership includes international freight, tariff, packaging, potential rework, and the cost of a failed inspection. Cheap acrylic that yellows in 18 months? That's a rework cost. Cheap LEDs that die at 12 months? That's a service call, a truck roll, maybe a lost customer.
I've seen this go wrong: a shop ordered stainless letters with no aging test to save $200. They got pinholes in the silicone, water got in, LEDs failed in four months. Rework cost them $1,800 and a client. The $200 saving was the most expensive decision they made.

1. Ask for the 8-to-12-hour aging test documentation. If they blink, they don't do it.
2. Check LED module solder joints. Dull gray means cheap solder and a 12-to-18-month death sentence. Shiny silver means lead-free and 5+ years.
3. Demand the laser cutting tolerance. Ours is plus or minus 0.1 mm.
4. Ask what silicone they use. Neutral silicone, not acid cure. Acid cure eats acrylic over time.
5. Request a sample with the exact material and LEDs you'll receive. Not a showroom piece from three years ago.
6. Verify CE with a certificate that has today's date on it. If they sweat, walk.
7. Ask for the UL file number if you're in the US. If they say "we work with UL," that's not a file number.
8. Get the L70 rating of the exact LED module. If they don't know what L70 is, they're resellers.
9. Confirm export packaging. Foam, carton, plywood crate. Not bubble wrap and prayer.
10. Ask for a landed cost breakdown, not a per-unit price. If they won't show you freight and tariff, they're hiding something.
LED isn't the future. Now it's the bare minimum.
L70 of 50,000 hours means the module still puts out 70 percent of its original brightness at 50,000 hours. That's 5.7 years of continuous run time. If your customer wants a sign to last a decade, you need modules that exceed that, not just meet it. Quality from Samsung, Osram, or Blueview gives you 5+ years real lifespan before noticeable dimming. Cheap modules start dying at 12 months.
Sustainable design isn't just recyclable aluminum. It's choosing a material that doesn't go to landfill in three years. 304 stainless does 10 years outdoors. 316 does 15 in marine air. Acrylic from Degussa goes 5 to 8 years without yellowing. That's less replacement, less shipping, less waste.
If you're doing dynamic signage, DMX programmable systems with RGB modules give you full color control. IoT smart signs let you switch content from a phone. But don't spec IoT for a strip mall pylon that just needs to say "OPEN" for 20 years. Wasted money. Use the right tech for the job.
