Look, I've been on a factory floor for 16 years. The product is not the expensive part of a sign install. Not by a long shot.

Factory-direct front-lit channel letters run $20-80 per letter. That same letter, installed by a licensed US sign contractor, shows up on an invoice at $200-700.

That's a 50-65% product savings. But labor, permits, lifts, and liability eat the difference. You're not paying $500 for a letter. You're paying $500 for it to stay on the wall during a windstorm.

Here's what nobody tells you: the sign itself is often 30-40% of the total installed cost.

I've watched sign shops buy our front-lit channel letters for $80 each, then charge their client $600 each after install. The markup isn't greed. It's the cost of not going to court.

The DIY Cost Illusion

Pull a YouTube video and a sack of Tapcons. What's the worst that happens?

Let's count. You need a lift because a 10-foot ladder can't hold you and a 30-pound sign. You need a drill, a level, sealing tape, silicone, wiring, a power supply, and a buddy who doesn't mind heights. You need permits, which often require a licensed electrician's signature.

By the time you rent a lift, buy hardware, and take two days off work, you've spent more than a local crew would charge for labor. Only difference is you own the liability.

The ugly truth is IP65 doesn't mean waterproof forever. It means the housing resists water jets from any direction. It does not mean your sign survives a pressure washer, a hurricane, or a 19-year-old with a caulk gun.

I've seen this go wrong: A contractor in Texas ordered $8,000 of back-lit halo letters from us. He saved $1,500 by having his nephew install them with construction adhesive. A February cold snap dropped to 28°F, the adhesive turned brittle, and four letters fell on a Mercedes. The insurance claim was triple the project cost.

Where DIY Can Actually Work

I'm not saying every sign needs a union crew. Some jobs a steady-handed owner can handle.

Non-lit stainless steel letters are the DIY sweet spot. No wiring, no power supply, no UL 48 headaches. Drill stud holes into solid framing, use structural adhesive as backup, and walk away.

But the moment you add LEDs, you add a power supply that can fail, a return that can leak, and a code inspector who wants a licensed electrician's name on the permit. That's not a DIY project anymore.

Also, if you're mounting ADA tactile signs, you don't need a lift. But you do need to follow the 48-60" mounting height and non-glare finish with Grade 2 Braille. I've seen shops screw that up and have to reorder the whole interior package.

What You're Really Paying a Professional For

A good sign installer brings four things you can't order from Amazon: liability insurance, permits, a journeyman electrician, and a structural eye.

They know NEC Article 600 applies to electric signs. They know a 316 stainless sign costs 20-30% more than 304 and where to use it. They know that an 8-foot channel letter set needs wind load calculations, not just two anchors per letter.

Here's the hard part: our factory can't be that person for you.
