Use it for Miami Beach, salt air, and coastal industrial zones where 304 breaks down. 316 carries a 20-30% cost premium because of the 2-3% molybdenum, and it's worth every cent on a pier.
Good acrylic matters more than people think. Mitsubishi or Degussa acrylic has 90-92% light transmittance, blocks UV, and holds up 5-8 years before yellowing. Domestic acrylic starts yellowing in 1-2 years. The factory price difference is maybe 15-20%. Use the good stuff. And for any letter over 2.5 meters tall, spec 5mm thick or thicker. 304 stainless is the workhorse: 18% chromium, 8% nickel, 10+ year outdoor life in most climates. Brush finish #4 is standard for storefronts. Mirror #8 looks sharp in the showroom but scratches if you look at it sideways. Fabricated stainless letters need to be 1.5-2.0mm for exterior use. Installation is usually the biggest surprise. A crane truck, two licensed electricians, permits, and anchoring can run $2,000-5,000 on a large exterior sign. Three stories up? More. HOA requirements? More. Engineered mounts? More.

Express courier like DHL or FedEx takes 7-15 days and runs $30-100 for small samples. Air freight takes 10-20 days and costs $4-12 per kilogram. For full sign sets, sea freight is the practical option: 50-70 days, $80-200 per cubic meter for LCL, or $1,200-3,000 for a full container.
The ugly truth is that the US Section 301 tariff on Chinese-made signs runs about 30%. That's real, and it impacts your landed cost. We're still 50% cheaper than domestic fabrication after that tariff, but pretending it doesn't exist is ridiculous. Include it in your quote. And don't under-declare the customs value. That's fraud, and customs knows what signs cost.
CE marking is common in China but it's a self-declaration for many products. A legitimate CE cert costs 20,000-50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks. Ask to see the certificate with today's issue date, not a scan from five years ago.
IP ratings are misunderstood too. IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets — that's the minimum for outdoor signs. IP66 handles powerful jets, and IP68 means submersible. For coastal projects, spec IP66. But remember: an IP rating only works if the installer seals the cable entry properly. We use neutral silicone and run an 8-12 hour aging test before shipping. If your electrician leaves the junction box open, moisture wins.
For US projects, the certification that matters is UL 48. It costs $4,000-15,000 and takes 4-9 months to get. Because of that, many small factories don't have it and will lie. ETL is a legit alternative that's 10-30% cheaper and faster. Ask for the certificate that matches your exact product model. If the factory dodges the question, that's your answer.
