Look, I've been on a sign factory floor for 16 years. I've burned my hands on hot acrylic and argued with LED suppliers. So I'm going to tell you what large outdoor signs actually cost and what will bite you in the ass.
We're Aochuang Sign in Lu'an, Anhui, China. 3,000m² facility, 50+ workers, exports worldwide. CE, RoHS, ISO 9001. MOQ is one piece. Lead time 7-15 days. That's what we can do.
What we can't do: install your sign in Ohio, pull permits, or guarantee UL listing on a stock product. Anyone who says a factory can do all that is lying or you're paying them to mark up a local contractor.
Here's what nobody tells you: a "large" outdoor business sign isn't one product. It's a phrase that covers channel letters, light boxes, halo letters, and fabricated metal. Each has different cost per letter or per square meter.
Let's start with numbers.
A standard front-lit channel letter runs $20-$80 from my factory floor. That same letter installed at US retail: $200-$700. I've watched sign shops pay $800 for a letter. Same 304 stainless, same Samsung LEDs. We ship that letter for $120.
Back-lit halo letters cost more because of the precision. $35-$120 per letter factory. US retail installed: $400-$1,000.
Stainless steel non-lit letters run $15-$40 per letter. 3D fabricated letters $40-$120. Aluminum letters $10-$25.
If you need a light box or menu sign, count $80-$250 per square meter. Neon flex runs $30-$200 per sign depending on size.
Factory-direct savings are 50-65% on product. You still pay shipping, tariff, and local installation. That's the honest math.
Acrylic matters. Imported UV-resistant acrylic from Mitsubishi or Degussa lasts 5-8 years before yellowing. Domestic acrylic: 1-2 years. If you're selling a sign to a customer who expects five years, don't put cheap domestic acrylic in it.
The ugly truth is most cheap quotes use domestic acrylic. It looks identical for six months. Then it yellows and the client blames you.
Thickness is not optional. Any sign over 2.5 meters uses 5mm+ acrylic. 2mm or 3mm on a big sign warps and cracks. I've seen this go wrong: a shop ordered 2mm to save $40, the face cracked in a windstorm, and they paid twice to rebuild.
Stainless steel is the outdoor workhorse. stainless steel letters.
