You’re comparing two things that aren’t always separate parts. Most “acrylic signs” are acrylic faces mounted on metal returns. The debate is really about what faces the customer and what holds the light.
Look, I’ve built both for 16 years. Acrylic gives you clean light diffusion and color options. Metal gives you structure and that high-end architectural look. Neither is “better” until you know where the sign lives and who’s paying the electric bill.
Here’s what nobody tells you: a $60 front-lit channel letter and a $300 back-lit halo letter can both use 304 stainless returns. The price difference is all in the lighting method and finish. So let’s break it down without the catalog fluff.
Acrylic faces have 90-92% light transmittance. That’s why front-lit channel letters look so even. We use UV-resistant Mitsubishi or Degussa sheets that hold up 5-8 years outdoors before yellowing. Domestic acrylic? I’ve seen it yellow in 18 months.
The ugly truth is cheap acrylic is false economy. You save $8 per face and replace the whole sign in two years. Labor alone kills you.
Thickness matters more than you think. Under 2.5 meters, 2mm or 3mm is fine. Over that, go 5mm or the face flexes and cracks at the mounting holes. Most sign shops won’t tell you because they want the repeat order.
For standard storefronts, front-lit channel letters with acrylic faces are the workhorse. They run $20-80 per letter from our factory. That same letter installed by a US sign company costs $200-700. The savings is 50-65% off product, even after shipping and 30% Section 301 tariff.

316 stainless costs 20-30% more. It has 2-3% molybdenum, which handles salt. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach or any coastal job, pay the premium or I guarantee you’ll be back in three years.
Aluminum is different. It’s one-third the weight of steel and naturally rust-proof. Aluminum letters run $10-25 per piece factory, 8-12 year outdoor life. Great for fascia signs where weight is a concern. The downside? Aluminum dents easier than stainless. If a truck backs into it, you’ll see the crease.
For premium architectural jobs, back-lit halo letters are the standard. Stainless returns, acrylic face or reverse channel, LEDs casting light off the wall. $35-120 factory per letter. Retail installed? $400-1,000. Insane margin if you buy direct.
Here’s what nobody tells you: the sign face is less than half the long-term cost. LEDs and power supplies decide whether you’re doing warranty work in 12 months or 5 years.
SMD 2835 modules run 100-150 lumens per watt. That’s industry standard. SMD 5730 gives 40-60 lumens per chip for high brightness. Quality modules from Samsung, Osram, or Lan Jing 5+ years real-world. Cheap modules from some Shenzhen alley factory? 12-18 months before they start flickering.
We load our channel letters with quality modules and mean it. L70 rating is ≥50,000 hours. That’s about 11 years at 12 hours a day. Your real failure point is the power supply, not the LED. We warranty power supplies 1 year, LED 2 years. That’s honest. Anyone offering 5-year on the whole sign is pricing a replacement into the quote.
For front-lit channel letters, the LED sits behind the acrylic face. Even lighting, high visibility. For back-lit halos, LEDs sit behind the return and spill light onto the wall. Softer, classier, but you need a solid wall surface or it looks like a mistake.

Use acrylic when you want color. You can print or vinyl any Pantone. Metal gives you painted or powder coated finishes, but acrylic just glows. At night, nothing beats a front-lit acrylic face for visibility.
Just don’t use acrylic where it takes physical abuse. Street-level windows get kicked, banged by shopping carts, scraped by snow shovels. Acrylic scratches. It’s plastic. Anyone selling it as indestructible is lying.
Metal is for brands that want permanence and architectural weight. Law firms, medical buildings, hotels. Stainless steel letters on a stone facade say money. Aluminum says clean and modern without the steel price.
Look, I’ve seen a bank pay $2,000 for five brushed stainless letters and they looked perfect ten years later. The acrylic sign next door was replaced twice in the same period. Metal pays for itself in maintenance alone.
For coastal or industrial zones, metal wins. 316 stainless handles salt and chemical exposure for 15+ years. Acrylic doesn’t rust, sure, but UV and salt spray age it faster than steel unless you buy premium UV-resistant sheet.
Here’s something most factories won’t admit: UL 48 certification is not something we stock. It costs $4,000-15,000 and takes 4-9 months with quarterly audits. If your US project requires UL-listed signs, we can do it, but you’re paying and waiting.
Same with CE. We have CE, RoHS, ISO 9001. CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB. Ask any factory for the certificate with today’s date. Many will show you a PDF from 2016 that expired. We’ll send current docs.
IP65 is our minimum outdoor rating. That means dust-tight and water jets from any direction. It does not mean your sign survives a Florida hurricane. For coastal, ask for IP66. If someone sells you IP68 for a storefront sign, they’re overselling. IP68 is submersible.
