The ugly truth is that most buyers importing electric signs into the US have zero idea what NEC Article 600 actually requires until their permit gets rejected. Then they're calling me in a panic because their sign is sitting in a warehouse in Long Beach and the city inspector won't sign off. I've been on that phone call a hundred times. Let me save you the headache.

What NEC Article 600 Actually Says

NEC Article 600 is the section of the National Electrical Code that covers electric signs and outline lighting. It's the rulebook for how a sign gets wired, grounded, and installed so it doesn't burn down a strip mall at 2 AM.

Here's what nobody tells you: Article 600 isn't about how the sign looks. It's about the guts.

Three things matter. One: a disconnect switch within sight of the sign, or a lockable disconnect that meets the distance rules. Two: proper grounding β€” metal frames bonded to ground with a real lug, not painted over. Three: clearance from combustible materials and the rated wiring methods feeding the sign. Pass those three, and you're 80% done with the electrical inspection.

UL 48 Is the Real Gatekeeper

Article 600 references UL 48, the safety standard for electric signs. Most US jurisdictions won't accept a sign without a UL 48 label. That's a fact, not my opinion.

Here's the part that hurts: UL 48 certification costs $4,000 to $15,000 per factory, takes 4 to 9 months, and requires quarterly audits. That's why a lot of Chinese factories don't have it β€” including some of the best ones.

We don't hold UL 48 at our factory. I'm saying that straight out because you need to hear it before you order, not after. What we do hold is CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001, and we build to UL 48 spec: proper wire gauge, listed LED drivers, strain relief on every cable entry, grounding lugs, and spacing that keeps hot components away from flammable surfaces.

But if your inspector demands a physical UL label, we can't give you one. Any factory that promises you one and doesn't have it is lying to you.

Three Ways to Get Compliant

Option one: order your front-lit channel letters from us and have a local US sign shop run a UL field evaluation. It's typically $2,000 to $5,000, and the shop takes responsibility for the label. This is the most common path for importers, and it works fine.

Option two: work with a US-based UL shop that imports our product, relists it under their own UL file, and sells it to you marked up 40%. That's how a lot of "American-made" signs actually work, by the way.

Option three: buy from a Chinese factory that holds UL 48. There are a few, and they charge for it. If your project truly requires a factory-issued label, ask to see the certificate with today's date, not a PDF from 2019. I've seen this go wrong β€” a buyer paying a premium for a UL listing that expired three years ago. Nobody checked.

ETL vs UL vs CE β€” Don't Get Played

ETL is a legitimate alternative to UL. It's backed by Intertek, and it's usually 10-30% cheaper with faster turnaround. Many local inspectors accept it. But ask first, because the Authority Having Jurisdiction has the final word, and some are stubborn about it.

The nasty one that costs people real money:

CE marking means nothing in the US.

Nothing.

CE is a self-declared European conformity mark. It costs 20,000-50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks, and it tells you zero about whether your sign passes US inspection. If any factory tells you "we have CE, that's good enough for America," they're lying. We have CE because we export to Europe and other markets, but I'd never hand a US buyer that as a substitute for UL or ETL.

The ADA Confusion Nobody Mentions

While we're on the subject of codes, don't confuse Article 600 with ADA requirements. They're separate, and both can sink your project.

ADA rules for signs are about mounting height at 48-60 inches, non-glare finishes, and Grade 2 Braille. They apply to signs in US buildings β€” not to the billboard outside. If you're importing acrylic light boxes for a lobby, your factory needs to know braille pins are specified, or you'll get a beautiful sign that fails the guy with the tape measure.

IP Ratings: The Hurricane Lie

IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets. It's the minimum for outdoor signs. IP66 handles powerful jets, and IP68 means submersible. That's all straightforward.

Here's what nobody tells you: an IP65 rating does NOT mean your sign survives a Florida hurricane. It means the enclosure resisted a water jet in a test chamber. It says nothing about wind load, flying debris, or flooding.

If you're installing on a coast, you need IP66 or better, and 316 stainless steel, not 304. The 316 contains 2-3% molybdenum, which stops the salt corrosion that eats 304 alive within a few years. It costs 20-30% more than our standard stainless steel letters. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine, and I'll tell you that too. For Miami Beach, pay for 316. Your 10-year maintenance bill will thank you.

What Actually Causes Sign Failures

I've seen more failed signs from cheap LEDs than from code violations. It's not even close.

A quality module using Samsung or Osram chips runs 100-150 lumens per watt and holds L70 for 50,000 hours β€” over five years of real lifespan. Cheap modules fail in 12-18 months, which means you're paying a service call that costs more than the module savings you bragged about at the bar.

Our factory uses quality modules, and we'll tell you what we don't use: no-name diodes in unmarked packages. If a supplier can't tell you who makes the LED chip, run.

The same logic applies to acrylic. We use UV-resistant acrylic from Mitsubishi or Degussa for outdoor faces. It holds 5-8 years before yellowing. Domestic acrylic yellows in 1-2 years. Both look identical in the catalog photo. Only one looks good on your customer's building after three years.

Wind Load and Structural Drawings β€” Our Honest Limit

Let me be straight about what we can't do for you.

We build signs. We don't stamp engineering drawings. If your local building department requires a licensed engineer's calculation for wind load on a 20-foot sign face, that's your job. We'll give you the dimensions and weights, and we'll use 5mm acrylic for faces over 2.5 meters so the structure actually holds together. But the stamped wet-signature drawing comes from an engineer licensed in the US, not from China.

Any importer who tells you otherwise is setting you up for a stalled permit.

Specs to Put in Every Purchase Order

Write these into your PO or you'll be arguing later:

  • LED chip brand: specify Samsung, Osram, or domestic premium. Don't accept "high quality" as an answer.
  • Color temperature: 3000-3500K warm for hospitality, 4000-5000K neutral for retail and corporate, 6000-6500K cool for industrial and highway. Write it down.
  • Acrylic type: UV-resistant grade, minimum 3mm for faces under 2 meters, 5mm above that.
  • Stainless grade: 304 for inland, 316 for coastal or industrial. Specify the finish β€” brushed #4 or mirror #8.
  • IP rating: IP65 minimum outdoor. IP66 if you're near the coast or in a flood zone.
  • Warranty: 2 years on LEDs, 1 year on power supplies. If they won't put it in writing, walk.

And ask for wiring diagrams. A good factory draws them for your electrician. Ours does, because a permit inspector will ask for them, and your electrician will charge you double if he has to reverse-engineer a sign at 4 PM on a Friday afternoon.

The Section 301 Tariff Reality

Let's talk about the cost of importing, because everyone forgets the tariff until the invoice arrives.

US Section 301 tariffs add about 30% on top of your product cost. That's on top of freight. Sea freight runs $80-200 per cubic meter for less-than-container loads, with about 65 days transit. Air freight is $4-12 per kilogram and gets there in about 10 days. Express courier for small parts is $30-100 and takes 7-10 days.

Do the math before you order, not after. A $50 letter becomes $65 with tariff, then $78 with freight. Meanwhile, US retail installed prices run $200-700 per letter for front-lit, and $400-1,000 for halo-lit. Factory-direct still saves you 50-65% on the product β€” but only if you quote the landed cost correctly. I've watched plenty of buyers blow up their own profit margin by ignoring the 30% line item.

The Honest Bottom Line

NEC Article 600 is a wire size, a ground lug, and a disconnect switch away from most people's problems. The sign itself is rarely the issue. It's the paper trail that proves the sign is safe.

  • "Who makes your LED chips?" β€” If they say "SMD 2835" without a brand, keep digging.
  • "What's your failure rate on the 8-12 hour aging test?" β€” A real factory knows the number.
  • "What exactly goes in your export packaging?" β€” If it's not foam plus carton plus plywood crate, your sign will arrive bent.
  • "What's your warranty in writing?" β€” Not promises. Paper.

Ask those five questions and you'll know more than most buyers who've been in this game for years. And if a factory gets defensive about answering, that's your answer.

The ugly truth is that compliance is boring until it's not. Do the paperwork right and your sign runs clean for a decade. Skip it and you're paying an electrician to tear a perfectly good neon flex sign off a brick wall because the code official found a missing ground wire during a random inspection. I've seen it happen to a shop owner who'd been in business 20 years. Don't let it happen to you.
