Light boxes run $80–250 per square meter, and neon flex signs land at $30–200 per sign depending on complexity. Aluminum non-lit letters start at $10–25 per letter. What you pick depends on mounting surface, viewing distance, and whether you need illumination at night.

304 stainless steel letters will give you 10+ years outdoors. That's 18% chromium and 8% nickel, density 7.93 g/cm³, usually 1.0–3.0 mm thick. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is more than enough.
The ugly truth is, 316 stainless costs 20–30% more than 304 because it has 2–3% molybdenum, which buys you 15+ years in salt air. If your client's site is within a few miles of the ocean, spec 316 or you'll be back in three years pulling rusted letters off a wall.
Acrylic faces are where cheap signs die. UV-stable acrylic from Mitsubishi or Degussa lasts 5–8 years before it starts yellowing. Domestic acrylic can yellow in 1–2 years. Light transmittance is 90–92% for a 2–3mm face. If the sign is over 2.5 meters wide, step up to 5mm acrylic or the face will bow in the wind.
For
acrylic LED letters, the LED module matters more than the acrylic. SMD 2835 modules run 100–150 lumens per watt and are the industry standard. Quality modules from Samsung, Osram, or Blueview will last 5+ years. Cheap no-name modules die in 12–18 months because the solder joints are dull gray, not shiny silver.
Color temperature isn't a style choice. 3000–3500K is warm and works for hospitality. 4000–5000K is neutral for corporate and retail. 6000–6500K is cool and reads industrial or highway. If you don't spec this, the factory will default to whatever they have on the shelf, and your client might hate it.
Engineering for Wind Loads, Seismic Code, and Weathering
Look, any outdoor
sign manufacturer that quotes you without asking about wind load, site exposure, and local code amendments is guessing. That's the difference between a factory and a middleman with a website.
IP65 sounds impressive. That means dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction. That doesn't mean your sign survives a Florida hurricane. IP66 handles powerful jets for coastal areas. IP68 is submersible and only for extreme weather or flooded mounting conditions.
UL 48 listing costs $4,000–15,000 and takes 4–9 months with quarterly audits. ETL is a recognized alternative, usually 10–30% cheaper. Most factories won't have UL unless a US client already paid for it. If they claim they do, ask for the certificate with today's date.
CE marking costs 20,000–50,000 RMB and takes 2–8 weeks. A lot of factories say they have CE. Ask to see the certificate with today's date. Watch them sweat. The same goes for RoHS and ISO 9001.
For US electrical work, NEC Article 600 applies. For ADA-compliant tactile signs, mounting height is 48–60 inches, finish must be non-glare, and Braille must be Grade 2. Skip these details and the sign won't pass inspection. Doesn't matter how pretty it is.
The Manufacturing Process: From CAD to Factory-Finished Sign
