The Real Difference Between Waterproof and “Water-Resistant”

Look, I’ve yanked the cover off a dead sign in a strip mall parking lot at 10 p.m. Water still dripped out of the power supply casing while the owner stood behind me, swearing he paid for “outdoor rated.” He did. He just didn’t pay for waterproof. “Water-resistant” is a sales term, not an engineering standard. A standard non-sealed power supply might survive a light mist once. Maybe. Those vents for cooling? They’re open invitations to condensation, fog, and sideways rain—the kind that finds its way into every channel letter on a building. Most will show you a piece of paper from five years ago for an entirely different product. The same goes for IP ratings on power supplies. Another rookie mistake: thinking that if the LEDs are IP65, the sign is IP65. The power supply is the weakest link. Here’s what nobody tells you: a waterproof power supply only works if the installation doesn’t create a bathtub around it.
