I've been on the factory floor 16 years. I've repaired enough failed signs to know that most signage warranties are written by someone who's never touched a heat gun. If you're comparison shopping, you need to understand real coverage, not what sounds good in a PDF.
Here's what nobody tells you: a 5-year warranty on LED modules doesn't mean your sign will look good for 5 years. It means the factory assumes most failures happen after 12-18 months, and they'll deny the rest for water ingress, voltage spikes, or "improper installation."
That's the game.
I'm going to tell you exactly what to look for in a signage warranty — the real coverage, the exclusions that matter, and how to test a supplier before you send a deposit. This isn't a sales pitch.
Look, an LED module with L70 ≥50,000 hours sounds impressive. That's the lab number for when the diode dims to 70% of its original brightness. It does not mean the solder joints, the driver, or the waterproof silicone will last that long.
On our floor, we use Samsung, Osram, or Lan Jing. Their real-world lifespan is 5+ years if installed correctly. Cheap modules? 12-18 months before you're renting a boom lift.
But our written warranty is only 2 years on LED modules, 1 year on the power supply. I won't promise 5 years because I can't control what your electrician does at midnight.
That's the difference between lifespan and warranty. One is a lab estimate. The other is a legal promise.
The ugly truth is, power supplies fail before LEDs. A quality Mean Well driver will run 3-5 years. A cheap knockoff? 6 months if you're lucky.
That's why every quality sign should have a removable, replaceable power supply. Not a sealed box you have to throw away.
Our factory warranty is simple, and I'll write it here instead of hiding it: 2 years on LED modules, 1 year on power supplies. That's it. No 10-year bumper-to-bumper.
But a real warranty also covers fabrication defects — welds cracking, faces falling out of the returns, poor adhesion. If our TIG welds on a stainless steel letters sign fail because the joint was bad, we fix it. That's workmanship.

I've seen this go wrong: A customer bought a sign with a 5-year 'marine grade' warranty from another factory. 316 stainless, the works. One year later, pitting and rust blooms along the welds.
The warranty claim? Denied. The fine print said the owner had to wash the sign with fresh water every 30 days. In Miami. In August. Who's doing that?
Look, 316 stainless has 2-3% molybdenum and will last 15+ years in coastal air. But if the factory uses cheap filler rod on the welds, or passivates incorrectly, the metal will pit no matter what the warranty says.
That's the difference between a material's natural lifespan and the actual fabrication quality. You can't warranty your way out of bad workmanship.
Here's what nobody tells you: CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB. Most factories say they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today's date next to their name. If they can't, their warranty is likely as real as their certification.
Same goes for UL 48. A legitimate UL listing costs $4,000-15,000 and takes 4-9 months, with quarterly audits. If a supplier says they have UL but won't share the file number, walk away.
Don't ask "How long is your warranty?" That's a rookie question.
