The factory-direct savings on commercial building signage usually runs 50-65% off product cost. You still pay shipping and possibly tariffs. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to you.
Here's what nobody tells you: acrylic isn't just acrylic. The Japanese and German UV-resistant stuff—Mitsubishi or Degussa—holds 90-92% light transmittance for 5-8 years before yellowing. Domestic acrylic? 1-2 years. Maybe.
I've burned my hands on hot acrylic bending returns. Cheap material gets brittle fast. Over 2.5 meters in height, use 5mm+ or the face will flex and crack at the mounts.
Stainless 304 is your workhorse. 18% chromium, 8% nickel, density 7.93g/cm³. Outdoor life of 10+ years. Common thickness 1.0-3.0mm. Brushed #4, mirror #8, PVD, powder coat—all fine.
If the building sits near salt water or an industrial refinery, don't argue. Use 316. It has 2-3% molybdenum and lasts 15+ years marine grade. Costs 20-30% more than 304. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach, pay for stainless steel letters in 316. Otherwise you'll be back in five years.
Aluminum weighs one-third of steel and lasts 8-12 years outside. Thickness 0.040-0.063 inches. It's rust-proof, anodized or powder coated. Decent for fascia logos where weight matters.
The ugly truth is most Chinese factories stuff in the cheapest SMD 2835 modules they can find and call them "high quality." Those die in 12-18 months. Then your client calls you, furious, because half the letter is dark.
We use Samsung, Osram, or Blueview modules. SMD 2835 puts out 100-150 lumens per watt and is the industry standard. SMD 5730 gives you highest brightness at 40-60 lumens per chip. L70 rating ≥50,000 hours.
Quality modules last 5+ years real-world. Cheap ones? 12-18 months. That's not a secret.
Color temperature matters more than brightness. 3000-3500K warm for hospitality. 4000-5000K neutral for corporate and retail. 6000-6500K cool for industrial and highway. Don't put a 6500K cool white on a steakhouse. I've seen this go wrong: client wanted "bright" and ended up with a sign that looked like a gas station.
Warranty is two years on LEDs, one year on power supplies. That's factory standard, not a marketing promise.

US retail installed runs $200-700 per front-lit letter and $400-1,000 per back-lit halo letter. We ship the product. You do the install or hire a local sign contractor. That's the tradeoff.
MOQ is one piece. Seriously. If you need a single lobby logo, we'll build it. But the freight on one small sign can eat you alive. Less than $100 by express for small stuff, but over 30 kilos you're better off consolidating.
Here's what nobody tells you: CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks. Most factories say they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today's date on it. Then call the issuing body. I'll wait.
We hold CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001. Those are real. RoHS keeps the lead out of the solder. ISO 9001 means our process is audited, not that every sign is perfect.
For the US, you want UL 48 if it's an electric sign. That's $4,000-15,000 and 4-9 months of testing, with quarterly inspections. ETL is a decent alternative, 10-30% cheaper. If a factory claims UL but can't show you the file number, walk away. NEC Article 600 applies to most installations. ADA tactile signs need Grade 2 Braille and mounting at 48-60 inches with non-glare faces. We can build to spec, but your local electrician signs off.
IP65 is minimum outdoor. It means dust-tight and water jets from any direction. It does NOT mean your sign survives a Florida hurricane. IP66 handles powerful jets, IP68 is submersible. For most commercial building signage, IP65 is enough. If you're near the coast, ask for IP66 sealing.
Lead time is 7-15 days. Not 45. Not "depends on season." Here's the actual sequence.
Design confirmation takes 1 day. Laser cutting ±0.1mm takes 1-2 days. Bending and TIG welding 1-2 days. Grinding and polishing 1-2 days. Acrylic face CNC 1 day. LED assembly 1-2 days. Sealing with neutral silicone 1 day. Then we run an 8-12 hour aging test and 100% QC inspection before it hits the export packaging—foam, carton, plywood crate.
Every step adds up exactly like that. If you change the logo after approval, add 2 days. Maybe 3 if the welder's already built the returns.
MOQ of one piece means we can do rush jobs, but you pay express freight. And no, we won't skip the aging test to save a day. A sign that fails in your client's storefront costs us more than a late shipment.
Express takes 7-15 days and runs $30-100 for small packages. Air freight is 10-20 days at $4-12 per kilo. Sea freight takes 50-70 days—$80-200 per cubic meter LCL or $1,200-3,000 for a full container.
Here's the part importers forget: US Section 301 tariff on many sign products is roughly 30%. That's on top of product cost and freight. If you don't ask your forwarder about it, you'll get a surprise invoice at the port.
We'll quote FOB Lu'an. You arrange freight or we can recommend a forwarder. We don't hide the tariff in the unit price. You'll see it.
For large jobs, sea freight makes sense. For one 40-pound box, express is cheaper than you think. Do the math before you ask for a quote.
We can't install your sign in Chicago. We don't pull permits. We don't do site surveys or local code inspections. Call a licensed local sign contractor for that.
We can't promise UL listing on a job without paying for the field evaluation. If your county demands UL 48, factor in $4,000-15,000 and 4-9 months for certification, unless the product already carries it. We'll tell you if it does.
We can't make cheap acrylic last 8 years. If you specify domestic material, I'll warn you it yellows in 1-2 years. Then I'll build it anyway because you're the customer. But don't call me next year complaining.
We can't give a firm quote without dimensions, material, and quantity. "How much for a building sign?" is not a quote request. That's a conversation starter.
We also can't match a $6 aluminum letter from some no-name shop that uses glue instead of welding. You'll get exactly what you pay for.
