Box standard for dual-lit? $45-150 per letter. If someone quotes you under that, ask why. Stainless, Aluminum, Acrylic β Material Truths
For standard channel letters, 304 stainless is the sweet spot. Density is 7.93 g/cmΒ³, 18% chromium, 8% nickel β that's what gives it the corrosion resistance. We use 1.0-3.0mm thickness. For letters over 2.5 feet tall, go 5mm acrylic face because thinner stuff will flex and crack.
If you want lightweight and rust-proof,
aluminum letters are 1/3 the weight of steel. Anodized or powder-coated finish gives you 8-12 years outdoors. They're also cheaper: $10-25 per letter from our factory. The tradeoff? Sea freight takes about 65 days at $80-200 per cubic meter for LCL β that's less-than-container-load β or $1,200-3,000 for a full container. And don't forget the US Section 301 tariff on Chinese goods. It's around 30%. Figure that into your quote. A $100 letter becomes $130 on paper before freight.
Certifications: Don't Buy the Story
The certification game is where factories lie. CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks. Most factories claim they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today's date. Not a PDF from 2018 β scan the QR code and check the database. I've watched competitors slap a CE sticker on signs that have never seen a test lab.
For the US, UL 48 is the gold standard for signs. It costs $4,000-15,000 and takes 4-9 months, with quarterly factory audits. Not every factory has it β we're working on ours because clients keep asking. ETL is an alternative and runs 10-30% cheaper. IP65 is minimum for outdoor β that's dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction.
Here's what nobody tells you: IP65 doesn't mean waterproof. It means "water resistant enough for normal rain." Florida hurricanes, coastal salt spray, power washing at close range? That's beyond IP65. You want IP66 for coastal/high-moisture, and IP68 for truly extreme conditions. If a factory claims IP68, they better have the test documentation.
Lead Time and Production
