
Clean acrylic channel letters with pH-neutral soap, warm water, and a microfiber cloth. No ammonia. No alcohol. No pressure washer. Do that every 3-6 months and a 5mm acrylic face that should stay clear for 5-8 years won't turn yellow in 18 months. That's the whole answer. The rest is how to do it without falling off a ladder or frying an LED module.
The ugly truth is most sign shops won't tell you this because there's no money in it. They'd rather sell you a "specialty acrylic cleaner" for $40 a bottle. I've mixed the same stuff in a bucket for pennies.
Look, acrylic is not glass. Even brand new, a 5mm cast acrylic face only transmits 90-92% of the light your LED modules are throwing at it. That's physics. Now add six months of road film, bird droppings, and exhaust dust. You're not losing 2%. You're losing enough light that a customer walking past at night thinks the sign is dying.
Yellowing is different. Cheap domestic acrylic turns yellow in 1-2 years outdoors. Good UV-resistant acrylic from Mitsubishi or Degussa goes 5-8 years before you see real color shift. Cleaning won't stop UV degradation, but it removes the acidic crud and oxidized film that speeds up micro-crazing on the surface.
Here's what nobody tells you: a dirty sign runs hotter. Dust and pollen settle on the face and the returns. Heat builds. LEDs already age faster when hot. Our L70 rating of 50,000 hours assumes the modules can breathe. Suffocate them with dirt and you'll be replacing modules or a whole front-lit channel letter before the warranty runs out.
I've swapped faces on signs where the acrylic looked fine in daylight but lit up like a dirty windshield at night. That haze isn't always age. More often, it's baked-on grime the owner swore wasn't that bad.
Kill the power at the breaker before you touch the sign. Not the switch inside the store. The breaker. I've seen an installer grab a wet return can and get lit up because some genius wired the letters to a switch leg that stayed hot. Don't be that guy.
Ladders and wet rags don't mix. If you're leaning over a storefront sign with a bucket of soapy water, tie off or have a spotter. One slip with a pressure washer wand and you're on the sidewalk explaining to the landlord why the sign flickers.
Here's what nobody tells you: IP65 doesn't make a sign indestructible. It means the housing is dust-tight and can take water jets from any direction. It does not mean you should spray the face from two inches away like you're washing a truck. Channel letters have seams. Seams open with age, heat, and bad silicone. Your job is to wipe, not flood.
Chemical safety is simple. Don't use ammonia, acetone, MEK, toluene, or anything that smells like nail polish remover. Those solvents etch acrylic. They also break down the neutral silicone we use to seal your back-lit halo letters at the factory. Once that seal goes, water walks straight into the LED cavity.
If you're cleaning a sign that's already damaged or has water inside, don't touch it wet. Turn off the breaker, open the service panel after it dries, and check for corroded connections. If you see green fuzz, call someone who knows what a thermal runaway looks like.
Use a soft microfiber cloth, a second dry microfiber, a bucket of warm water, and a few drops of pH-neutral dish soap. If you're fancy, buy Meguiar's or Novus. But don't buy anything labeled "acrylic cleaner" from a sign supply counter for $40. That's just soap with a label.
Here's the brutal part: alcohol is worse than water. Isopropyl alcohol in small amounts won't kill a sign immediately, but repeated wipe-downs cause micro-crazing — tiny cracks that show up under the LED light as haze. I've watched a contractor wipe down acrylic LED letters with 70% IPA every month for a year. By month 14, the faces looked like frosted glass.
Paper towels? No. They scratch. Squeegee? Only if you like swirl marks. Use two cloths: one wet to lift dirt, one dry to buff. If you have hard water spots, add a tablespoon of white vinegar to a gallon of water. That's the only acid I'll allow near acrylic, and only diluted.
Don't use dish soap with added moisturizers or degreasers. Don't use car wash soap. Don't use anything with scent beads. If it says "antibacterial," it probably has something that'll strip the plasticizers out. Plain blue Dawn is about as aggressive as I'll go.
Change your rinse water when it turns gray.
Rinse the face with a mist from a garden sprayer or damp cloth first. Don't blast it. You're trying to float off the grit so you don't rub it into the acrylic like sandpaper.
Then wipe in straight lines, not circles. Top to bottom. Let the cloth do the work. If you press hard, you're grinding bird droppings into the surface. Wet the cloth again when it gets dirty.
I've seen this go wrong: an installer scrubbed dried bird crap with a green scouring pad. Took the gloss off in a 6-inch circle. At night, that circle glowed like a halo. We had to replace the whole face over one stupid scrub.
After the face is clean, wipe the returns and the back edge with a damp cloth. That's where spiders, mud daubers, and cigarette butts end up. Not kidding. I've pulled a dead mouse out of a 12-inch letter return. The customer thought the sign was shorting. It was just blocking the drain hole.
Final pass: dry the face with a clean microfiber. If water drips into the drain holes, that's normal. If water pools inside the letter, you've got a clogged drain or a bad seal. Don't ignore it. Water inside kills LED modules in 12-18 months, not 5+ years like our Bluesky and Rishang modules should last.
Returns and trim caps are usually aluminum or stainless, not acrylic. On our stainless steel letters, the returns are 1.2-1.5mm 304 or 316. You can clean those with the same pH-neutral soap and water. Don't use steel wool. Don't use acidic wheel cleaner. Brushed #4 finish will show every scratch you put in it.
If the letters have trim caps over the face, lift them carefully or clean the seam with a soft toothbrush. Dirt loves that groove. A toothbrush gets it out without scratching the acrylic.
Check the drain holes. Every channel letter needs a small hole at the lowest point of the return. That's not a defect. The hole lets condensation escape. If it's plugged with spider eggs or dirt, clear it with a zip tie or pipe cleaner. Don't drill new holes. You'll ruin the water management and possibly void the warranty.
If you see rust on a stainless return, don't scrub it with a wire brush. Call whoever built the sign. 201 stainless rusts in 1-2 years outdoors. 304 lasts 10+. If you bought cheap, you're not cleaning it — you're hiding it.
Number one mistake: Windex. It has ammonia. Ammonia is kryptonite to acrylic. One wipe won't kill it. Six months of weekly Windex will yellow and craze the face like a 20-year-old fast food sign. If the customer's cleaning crew is doing this, put a stop to it now.
Mistake two: pressure washers. I don't care if it's on the lowest setting. A pressure washer at close range will peel vinyl, force water past silicone, and knock a trim cap off. If you're cleaning a 20-foot sign from a lift, use a long-handled brush, not a wand.
Mistake three: magic erasers. Those things are melamine foam — basically ultra-fine sandpaper. They'll strip the gloss right off acrylic. You won't see it in daylight. You'll see it at night when the LED light hits a million micro-scratches.
The ugly truth is most sign cleaning damage is invisible until the sun goes down. LED light is directional. It exposes haze, scratches, and chemical etching that daylight hides. That's why I always tell customers to inspect the sign at night with the lights on before accepting a cleaning job as done.
Mistake four: shop rags with metal shavings or dirt. That's not a rag, it's sandpaper with a memory.
Clean the faces every 3 months if the sign faces a busy road. Every 6 months if it's in a strip mall with light dust. If the sign is in a kitchen exhaust path or near a highway, clean it every 60 days. Grease film is worse than dirt.
Twice a year, open the electrical access and look for moisture, insects, or corroded connections. The power supply carries a 1-year warranty. LED modules carry 2 years. But that warranty assumes you didn't let water sit inside for six months. If the solder joints on the modules look dull gray instead of shiny silver, you've got cheap modules with maybe 12-18 months of life left. Ours use proper lead-free solder.
Call a pro if water is pooling inside a letter, if the face is cracked, if LEDs are flickering, or if the sign is mounted higher than a two-story ladder can reach. I've watched sign shop owners break ribs trying to save a $200 service call. Don't be that tough guy.
And for God's sake, keep a log. Date, what you cleaned, what you saw. If a face starts hazing or LEDs start flickering within the warranty window, that log is the difference between a free replacement and a fight with the factory.
Can I use Windex? No. Ammonia yellows acrylic. If you've already used it twice, stop now and inspect the face under LED light for haze.
Can I pressure wash my channel letters? No. IP65 is not IP68, and channel letters are not a boat hull. Mist and wipe only.
What if water got inside the letters? Turn off power. Remove the face or open the service panel. Dry everything. Replace any module that shows corrosion. Then reseal with neutral silicone, not hardware store acid-cure caulk.
How often should a sign company professionally clean large signs? Annually, same time they inspect the electrical. You wouldn't skip an oil change on a truck. Don't skip the sign that makes you money.
