You’re Probably Drawing Your Sign Wrong, and It’s Costing You Time and Money
I’ve seen it all. Architects who draw signs like they’re designing a skyscraper – every dimension perfect on paper, impossible to build. Trade shops that send over a napkin sketch and expect a quote in 30 minutes. Even seasoned sign guys who forget the most basic thing: a technical drawing isn’t a work of art. It’s a set of instructions for a guy with a TIG welder and a laser cutter.
Here’s what nobody tells you: the best sign spec is the one that eliminates questions. Every time your drawing leaves a gap – “what material for the trim cap?” or “how does this mount?” – someone on the factory floor guesses. And their guess is usually cheaper and weaker than what you wanted.
I’ve been in this trade 27 years. I’ve burned my hands on hot acrylic, argued with suppliers about LED binning, and watched a $15,000 sign get scrapped because somebody wrote “standard stainless” instead of a grade. This article is the stuff I wish every buyer knew before they sent me a PDF.
Back, Face, Return – If You Don’t Name These, You’re Not Ready to Buy
The ugly truth is: most drawings I get don’t even label the basic parts of a channel letter. Let’s fix that right now.

front-lit channel letter is three main components: the return (the sidewall), the face (the front that lights up), and the back (the part against the wall). If you spec a letter 18 inches tall, is that the face height or the overall height with mounting tabs? I’ve had to ask that question more times than I’ve had hot dinners.
On your drawing, clearly label which dimension is which. Show a cross-section. Include a note that says: “Face material: 3mm clear acrylic painted back, 92% light transmittance.” Not just “acrylic.” Because there’s 2mm, 3mm, 5mm – and if your letter is over 2.5 meters tall, you’d better use 5mm minimum or that face will sag like a cheap awning.
Also: indicate the trim cap profile. I’ve seen spec sheets that say “return depth 2.75 inches” but don’t say whether the trim cap is included in that measurement. It’s not. Add 3/8 inch for the cap. Write it down.
Material Specs: Don’t Be That Guy Who Writes “Stainless Steel” and Calls It Done
Look, I’ve watched sign shops pay $800 for a front-lit letter from a domestic fabricator. Same 304 stainless, same Samsung LEDs, we ship that letter for $120. But the biggest savings come when you spec the material right the first time.
If you're ordering
stainless steel letters, you need to tell me the grade. 304 or 316. 304 is fine for a mall in Kansas. But if it’s going on Miami Beach, pay the 20–30% premium for 316 or you’ll be replacing rusted letters in three years. And I don’t care what the salesman told you – “marine grade” is not a spec. Type 316 has 2–3% molybdenum. That’s what stops the salt air from turning your investment into orange streaks.
For aluminum, 0.040 to 0.063 inch is common for returns. For stainless, 1.0 to 3.0 mm. Write the gauge. Write the finish – brushed #4, mirror #8, powder-coated RAL number. Don’t say “brushed finish” and expect the factory to know you want a unidirectional grain that matches the building’s existing trim. I’ve had to re-polish entire letters because the architect had some boutique standard.
One more thing: domestic acrylic is not the same as Mitsubishi or Degussa. The cheap stuff yellows in 1–2 years. UV-resistant imports last 5–8 years. Your drawing should specify “UV-resistant acrylic, 92% transmittance” or I’m using the cheapest board I’ve got. That’s not me being difficult – that’s the industry standard unless you tell me otherwise.
LED Specs: Lumen Output, Color Temp, and the Solder Joint Test
Here’s what nobody tells you about LED specs in a drawing: most sign companies will buy the cheapest modules they can find unless you nail down the details. I’ve seen contracts that just say “LED lighting.” That’s like ordering a car and only saying “it has wheels.”
Quickest way to spot bad LED modules is to look at the solder joints. Dull gray means cheap lead-free solder that’ll fail in 18 months. Shiny silver means proper quality. But you shouldn’t have to check – your drawing should specify the chip type and wattage.
For front-lit letters, I’d spec SMD 2835 modules, 100–150 lumens per watt, color temp 4000K–5000K for general retail. For hospitality, go 3000K warm. For industrial, 6500K cool. Write it down. Also write “L70 rating ≥50,000 hours” – that means the LED will still output 70% of its initial brightness after 50,000 hours. If the factory gives you a warranty that’s less than 2 years, walk away. For
back-lit halo letters, the LED placement is critical. That soft glow behind the letter needs even spacing. Your drawing should show the distance between the LED strip and the wall – usually 1 to 2 inches. Too close and you get hot spots. Too far and the halo looks weak. I’ve seen spec sheets that just say “halo effect” with zero detail. That’s a ticket to a redo.
Mounting, Clearance, and the Dumbest Mistake I Still See
The ugly truth is: most sign failures aren’t electrical – they’re mechanical. Somebody forgot to account for how the sign attaches to the wall.
Your drawing needs a mounting detail. Is it a raceway? Standoffs? Direct mount? Show the bolt pattern. Show the torque spec if it matters. For channel letters over 24 inches, you need support brackets every 18–24 inches across the back. Write that note or your sign will bow.
I’ve done this go wrong: a client sent a drawing for a 6-foot stainless steel logo with no mention of wind load. It went on a building that faced the prevailing wind. Two months later the top mounts snapped. Total rewrite. Cost him twice what the original sign did. Now I always add a note: “For signs over 4 feet, consult local wind load requirements and add structural brackets.”
And for the love of everything, include the clearance between the letter and the wall. Halo letters need at least 1.5 inches for light to spread. Front-lit letters can sit tight, but you still need a quarter-inch for gaskets. Don’t just say “mount flush” – flush to your eye might mean a different thing to the installer.
Packaging and Shipping: The Part Nobody Draws, But Everybody Pays For
I know you want to focus on the sign, but here’s the real talk: I’ve seen perfect letters arrive cracked because nobody spec’d the crate. Your drawing doesn’t need to show packaging, but your procurement doc should.
LCL sea freight handles your crate 6–8 times between dock and your shop. That’s 6–8 chances for a forklift to punch through. Write in your spec: “export packaging – foam layer, carton wrap, plywood crate strapped to pallet.” We do that standard, but if your buyer doesn’t ask, some cheap freight forwarder will toss your letters in a box with air pillows.
Also – lead time. Our standard is 7–15 days from drawing approval. If your drawing is incomplete, that clock doesn’t start until I get answers. Put a deadline on your spec: “All questions must be answered within 48 hours of receipt.” That protects you when the installation date slips.
FAQ – The Questions I Still Have to Answer in 2024
Do I need to spec the exact shade of white for the return paint?
Yes. White is not white. I’ve seen a client reject letters because the return was “warm white” and the building trim was “pure white.” Send a RAL number or a Panitone chip. We can match anything, but if you don’t specify we use standard PMS 877 or RAL 9010. One is cool, one is warm. Your customer won’t forgive the difference.
What’s the minimum I should put on a drawing for a channel letter quote?
Letter height, depth, material (face + return + back), color, lighting type (front, halo, dual), LED color temp, mounting method, and quantity. That’s the bare minimum. If you can’t provide that, you’re wasting everyone’s time.
Do I need IP65 or IP68? And what’s the difference?
IP65 means dust-tight and water jets from any direction. Good for most outdoor signs. IP66 handles powerful jets – think coastal areas with pressure washers. IP68 means submersible – only needed if the sign sits in standing water. For a standard storefront, IP65 is fine. Don’t let someone upsell you on IP68 unless you’re installing underwater.
Why don’t your prices include UL listing? And should I care?
UL 48 certification costs $4,000–15,000 and takes 4–9 months. Most Chinese factories don’t hold it because the cost is insane for a small customer. If your local code requires UL, you’ll need to either pay for it or work with a listing agency that accepts ETL (10–30% cheaper than UL). For a single sign, many cities accept CE marking plus a local inspection. Check with your permit office before you assume. Most electricians will sign off on CE plus a written warranty. Don’t panic unless your city inspector is a stickler.
