Before you start, get your kit right. You’ll need a stud finder, drill, masonry bits for brick or concrete, self-tapping screws for metal, and a level. For the electrical side: a multimeter, wire strippers, and a crimping tool. Use silicone gaskets, not potting compound, for moisture seals—they’re easier to replace and just as effective when installed right.
We supply all mounting hardware with our letters. But here’s a tip from 15 years of factory work: order a few extra silicone gaskets per job. They cost pennies, and a dry letter box saves you a callback.
Measure your wall. Brick, glass, and metal each need different anchors. For brick, use drop-in anchors rated for at least 200 lbs per letter. For glass, you’ll need standoff mounts with rubber spacers to avoid stress fractures. Metal studs? Self-tapping screws work, but pre-drill with a smaller bit to avoid stripping.
Mark your letter positions with a laser level. Center-to-center spacing should match your raceway layout. A 1/16-inch error compounds over 10 feet—double-check before drilling.
Voltage drop is the silent killer of LED brightness. For a 24V system run at 30 feet of 18 AWG wire, you lose about 12% brightness. That’s noticeable on a storefront at night. Use our voltage drop calculator (free download) to pick the right gauge. For runs over 50 feet, switch to 14 AWG or go 24V instead of 12V.
Mount the power supply within 10 feet of the letters if possible. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. A proper thermal pad between the supply and its mounting surface pulls heat away—expect 50,000 hours instead of 30,000 if you do this right.
Attach the raceway first. For flush mounts, you’re drilling into the wall and hiding the raceway behind the letters. For standoff mounts, the raceway is visible—use a powder-coated channel that matches your letter backs. We offer both.
Here’s a time-saver: pre-wire all letters on the ground. Connect them in series with quick-disconnect plugs. Then mount each letter, plug it in, and test before sealing. This cuts install time by 30% on a typical 8-letter sign.
Silicone gaskets seal the letter backs to the raceway. Do not use caulk—it hardens and cracks within two years. Gaskets compress evenly and remain flexible. Apply a thin bead of silicone only at the wire entry points as backup.
Check your UL 48 compliance here. For outdoor signs, NEC Article 600 requires a disconnect switch within sight of the sign. We include that in our UL-listed kits. 30% of rework is from improper raceway sealing—a gasket swap costs $5, a full replacement costs $500.
For 24V, 18 AWG wire: at 30 ft, drop is 3.5% (acceptable). At 50 ft, 5.8% (borderline). At 100 ft, 11.6% (too high—use 12 AWG). For 12V, halves the distance—keep runs under 20 ft with 18 AWG. Use our calculator for exact numbers per your load.
Dead section? Check the driver first—multimeter across output. No voltage? Replace driver. Dim at far end? Voltage drop—re-run with thicker wire. Flickering? Loose connection at the quick-disconnect. 70% of failures are heat or moisture—inspect gaskets and thermal pads.
