NEC Article 600 is the electrical code that covers every illuminated sign you'll ever install in the US.
It doesn't care if you bought the sign from a shop in Ohio or a factory in Lu'an, China. If it has LEDs, neon, or any electrical components, the inspector will check it against Article 600. Understand the code before you spend a dime. I've watched too many buyers learn this the hard way.
That's why I wrote this guide.
Electric signs. Outline lighting. Channel letters with LEDs. Light boxes. Neon flex. Anything that lights up and gets bolted to a wall or hung from a ceiling.
Here's what nobody tells you: Article 600 applies to both factory-built and field-installed signs. So if you import a sign from our factory, you're not exempt. The sign still has to meet the same wiring, grounding, and disconnect requirements as one built down the street. The code doesn't have a "made in China" exception.
Your local electrical inspector enforces this. Not the factory. Not the shipping company.
UL 48 is the standard for electric signs in the US. It costs $4,000 to $15,000 and takes 4 to 9 months to get. The factory also gets quarterly audits.
Look, I'm going to be straight with you. Our standard custom signs are not UL 48 listed. Any factory that tells you their $40 channel letter is fully UL 48 listed without you paying extra is either lying or they tested one model ten years ago and now claim it for everything. That's not how UL works.
ETL is a legitimate alternative to UL. It costs 10 to 30 percent less. Inspectors accept it in most jurisdictions. If your project requires a listed sign, ask for the ETL file number and verify it online before you pay.
We can get UL 48 or ETL for your order, but you'll pay the certification cost and wait the extra time. For most sign shop owners, that math doesn't work on a one-off storefront job.
We build to NEC 600 wiring methods every day. Our LED modules come from Samsung, Osram, or Blueview. Our power supplies are UL-recognized. We seal outdoor signs with neutral silicone and run an 8 to 12 hour aging test on every unit.
Here's what we can't do. We can't guarantee a local inspector will pass your sign. Every city has its own AHJ and some of them make up their own rules. We can't wire the sign into your building's electrical panel. That's a licensed electrician's job. We can't UL list a one-piece custom sign for free. Nobody can.

IP65 is the minimum for outdoor signs. It means dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction.
The ugly truth is IP65 doesn't mean your sign survives a Florida hurricane. It means a pressure washer won't kill it. For coastal areas with salt spray and driving rain, step up to IP66. If the sign is near the ocean or gets pounded by storms, IP68 is the safe call.
We seal every outdoor sign to IP65 or better, depending on what you specify. Ask for the IP rating in writing. If a factory won't give you one, walk.
Stainless steel 304 gives you 10 plus years outdoors. It's 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine.
For Miami Beach or any coastal job, pay for 316 stainless. It adds 2 to 3 percent molybdenum and costs 20 to 30 percent more. That extra money buys you 15 plus years of marine-grade life. I've seen 304 signs pit and rust in three years by saltwater. Don't be that guy.
Acrylic faces from Mitsubishi or Degussa stay UV-resistant for 5 to 8 years. Domestic acrylic can yellow in 1 to 2 years. If your sign is over 2.5 meters wide, use 5mm acrylic or thicker. It's not a suggestion, it's how you avoid warped faces.
LED modules matter more than anything. Quality SMD 2835 modules give you 100 to 150 lumens per watt and an L70 of 50,000 hours. Cheap modules last 12 to 18 months. Then your customer calls you angry.
Factory prices for front-lit channel letters run $20 to $80 per letter. US retail installed runs $200 to $700 per letter. You save 50 to 65 percent buying direct.
For back-lit halo letters, factory price is $35 to $120 per letter. Retail installed in the US is $400 to $1,000 per letter. That's a healthy margin for you.
Shipping options: Express gets a small sign to your door in 7 to 15 days for $30 to $100. Air freight takes 10 to 20 days at $4 to $12 per kilogram. Sea freight takes 50 to 70 days at $80 to $200 per cubic meter for LCL. US Section 301 tariff adds roughly 30 percent.
Lead time from our factory is 7 to 15 days. MOQ is 1 piece. Warranty is 2 years on LEDs, 1 year on power supplies.
I've seen this go wrong: A shop in Texas bought 40 channel letters from a factory that swore they were NEC compliant. Inspector opened one up. No disconnect switch, no ground wire, no listed power supply. Red tag on the whole storefront. The shop paid twice—once for the signs, once to rewire them locally.
Don't let that be you.
CE marking costs 20,000 to 50,000 RMB. Most Chinese factories say they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today's date. If it's older than your last oil change, walk away.
Here's another one: "UL listed components" is not the same as a UL listed sign. If the factory says their sign is UL listed but only gives you component file numbers, the sign itself isn't listed. Your inspector may accept it, or he may not. Know the difference.
Rookie mistake number one: ordering an illuminated sign without specifying the disconnect switch. NEC 600 requires a disconnect within sight of the sign. If your sign doesn't ship with one, your electrician has to add it. That's another $150 to $400 per sign.
Rookie mistake number two: assuming the sign comes with a US plug. We ship with lead wires and a wiring diagram. Your electrician connects it to the building supply. That's code compliant and safer than some cheap Chinese plug that melts.
Specify US code compliance in your RFQ. Don't just say "NEC compliant." Say "Must meet NEC Article 600, IP65 outdoor, UL-recognized LED modules and power supplies."
Ask for the UL file numbers of every electrical component. Ask for the IP test report from the last batch. Ask for a sample photo of the wiring inside the letter. If the factory hesitates, find another factory.
For acrylic light boxes, confirm the disconnect switch location, the power supply rating, and the internal wiring method. A light box that costs $80 per square meter without these details will cost you triple when the inspector fails it.
Order from a factory that runs an 8 to 12 hour aging test. We do it on every sign. It catches cold solder joints and weak power supplies before they leave the building.
Finally, remember this: the cheapest sign is never cheap if it gets red-tagged. NEC Article 600 compliance isn't a marketing bullet point. It's the difference between a sign that lights up for five years and a sign that gets ripped off the wall by an angry building owner.
