Iâve been in this industry long enough to watch good sign shops bleed money on rework. Not because the sign was bad. Because the wiring wasnât up to code. One contractor I know had to rip out 14 channel letters on a hospital jobâ$12,000 in laborâbecause the disconnect was 22 feet from the sign, not 20. Thatâs the kind of mistake that kills your margin.
NEC Article 600 is the rulebook for electric signs. But hereâs the thing: the code is intentionally vague in spots. It leaves room for local inspectors to interpret. So the real skill isnât memorizing the text. Itâs learning how to read the room, document your compliance rationale, and negotiate before the inspector walks in.
This guide cuts through the code. Iâll give you the hard-won factory-floor wisdom that keeps your signs passing inspection the first time. No fluff. Just what you need to know.
First, scope. Article 600 covers all fixed, stationary, or portable electric signs. If it has lamps, LEDs, or neon and itâs meant to display advertising or information, itâs under this article. But there are edge cases that trip people up.
Channel lettersâfront-lit, back-lit halo, or stainless steel non-litâare covered. So are light boxes, neon flex signs, and digital displays. But what about a small LED sign plugged into a standard outlet? Yes, if itâs fixed in place. Portable signs under 20 amps and with a cord-and-plug connection can use a general-purpose receptacle as the disconnectâbut only if the sign is âreadily accessible.â (NEC 600.6(A)(2))
Hereâs the gotcha: a sign is considered âfixedâ if itâs attached to a building or structure. That includes wall-mounted, pole-mounted, or suspended signs. If itâs attached, Article 600 applies. No exceptions for size. Even a 12-inch acrylic LED sign hardwired to a junction box must comply.
The code also excludes signs that are purely mechanical (no electrical components) or signs that are part of listed equipment, like a vending machine. But in 15 years, Iâve never seen a custom sign that didnât fall under Article 600.
Outdoor signs face rain, snow, heat, and UV. Indoor signs face humidity, dust, and physical abuse. The code is clear: you must use wiring methods rated for the location.
For wet locations (outdoor, unheated canopies, or wash-down areas), you need:
For dry locations (indoor, climate-controlled), you can use Type THHN, XHHW, or even NM-B cable (Romex) if itâs not exposed to physical damage. But inside the sign cabinet, all wiring must be strandedâno solid conductors. And it must be secured every 4.5 feet minimum. (NEC 600.32, 334.30)
The most common failure I see? Installers using standard junction boxes on outdoor signs. A standard 4x4 box is not rated for wet locations. It rusts, water gets in, and you get a violation. Use a NEMA 3R box with gaskets. It costs $4 more. Saves you a reinspection fee of $150.

This is where most contractors get burned. NEC 600.6 requires a disconnecting means within sight of the sign. âWithin sightâ means visible and not more than 50 feet away. But for signs, the code is stricter: the disconnect must be within 20 feet of the sign, measured along the path of the raceway or cable. (NEC 600.6(A))
Why 20 feet? Because if you canât see the disconnect from the sign, you might work on a live circuit. Itâs a safety issue. But measuring this correctly matters. In a multi-tenant building, the disconnect might be inside a tenant space, and the sign is on the exterior wall. If the disconnect is 22 feet awayâmeasured through the wallâyouâre out of compliance.
The fix? Install a fused disconnect switch on the exterior wall near the sign. Or use a sign-rated receptacle (NEMA 5-20R) within sight if the sign draws under 20 amps. But remember: that receptacle must be the only load on that circuit, and it must be labeled âFor Sign Use Only.â (NEC 600.6(A)(2))
Exceptions to the 20-foot rule exist. If the sign is cord-and-plug connected and rated under 20 amps, you can use the receptacle as the disconnectâprovided itâs âreadily accessible.â That means no ladders, no moving furniture. The plug must be reachable from the floor. (NEC 600.6(A)(2))
And hereâs a rarely used trick: if the sign is part of a listed assembly with an integral disconnect (like some digital displays), you donât need a separate disconnect. But you must verify the listing. If itâs not UL 48 listed, you need a separate disconnect. Period. (NEC 600.6(B))
Iâve seen metal sign cabinets that werenât bonded. The result? A 120-volt potential on the cabinet. A maintenance worker touches itâand gets a shock. Thatâs a lawsuit waiting to happen.
NEC 600.7 requires all metal enclosures, raceways, and sign cabinets to be bonded to the equipment grounding conductor. The path must be permanent and continuous. You can use bonding jumpers or rely on the conduit systemâbut only if the conduit is properly threaded and made up with locknuts.
The rule: if you use EMT or rigid conduit as the grounding path, you must install a bonding bushing at the first point of entry into the sign. This ensures the conduit is bonded even if the locknut loosens. (NEC 250.92, 250.100) If you use flexible metal conduit (FMC), you must run a separate bonding jumper inside the flex. FMC alone is not a reliable ground path. (NEC 250.118(5))
For freestanding signs, you do not need a separate ground rod unless the sign is over 20 feet tall or has a metal pole that could become energized. But even then, the ground rod is supplementaryâthe main grounding path must still go back to the buildingâs grounding electrode system. (NEC 250.54) Iâve seen inspectors require ground rods for pole signs. My advice: install one anyway. It costs $50 in materials and saves a debate.
Hereâs the bonding checklist for any sign installation:
Neon signs have their own rules under Part II of Article 600. They require secondary conductors rated for the voltage (typically 7,500V to 15,000V). These conductors must be separated from all other wiring by at least 1.5 inches. And the transformer or power supply must be listed for sign useâno repurposing microwave oven transformers. (NEC 600.41, 600.42)
For LED signs, the code treats them like any other electric sign, but with a twist: the LED power supply (driver) must be listed and accessible. If the driver is remote, the wiring between the driver and the LED modules must be rated for the voltage and current. Most LED modules run on 12V or 24V DC, so you can use Class 2 wiring (CL2 or CL2P) if the power supply is listed as Class 2. But if the power supply is not listed as Class 2, you must use Chapter 3 wiring methods (conduit or cable). (NEC 600.33, 725.130)
What if a sign has both neon and LED sections? The code allows it, but you must keep the secondary neon conductors separated from the LED wiring. No shared raceways. No bundling. And the neon transformer must have its own disconnectânot shared with the LED power supply. (NEC 600.42)
Bottom line: neon is dying out. Over 90% of new signs are LED. But if youâre retrofitting an old neon sign, treat it like a new installation. The code doesnât grandfather unsafe wiring.
Every sign disconnect must be labeled. The label must say âSign Disconnectâ or something similar. And the junction box at the sign must be labeled with the circuit number and panel location. Iâve seen inspectors fail signs simply because the label was missing. (NEC 600.6(C))
For signs with remote power supplies or transformers, label the supply with the sign it serves. If you have multiple signs in a building, each disconnect must be clearly identified. Use a permanent marker or engraved labelânot a sticky note.

One trick I use: I take photos of the bonding jumper installation and the disconnect label, then tape them inside the sign cabinet. That way, if an inspector questions it later, the evidence is right there.
If you import signs from overseasâlike from Aochuang Sign in China (CE, RoHS, ISO 9001 certified, 50+ workers, 3,000m² facility)âyou face a hurdle: UL listing is not required by NEC, but most US jurisdictions require it. UL 48 listing costs $4,000 to $15,000 and takes 4-9 months. Thatâs a non-starter for small shops.
The alternative? ETL listing. Itâs accepted as equivalent to UL in most states. Itâs 10-30% cheaper and faster. Or you can work with a local UL-certified shop to re-label the sign. But that adds cost and time.
If youâre importing, hereâs the reality: you canât just drop a non-listed sign on a job site and expect it to pass. The AHJ will flag it. Youâll have to either get it listed onsite (expensive) or replace it. Iâve seen importers lose entire contracts because they didnât factor in listing costs.
My advice: if youâre importing, ask for the factoryâs certifications. Aochuang, for example, has CE and ISO 9001. Thatâs a good start. But youâll still need UL or ETL for US jobs. Budget for it. Or buy from a US-based distributor that handles listing for you.

No. A standard light switch is not rated for continuous use as a sign disconnect. You need a listed disconnecting means, such as a fused disconnect switch or a sign-rated receptacle. The switch must be capable of interrupting the full load current of the sign and must be marked âSign Disconnect.â (NEC 600.6)
