You need to know what to ask, what to skip, and when to walk away. This guide tells you what we can do, what we can't do, and what nobody else will say out loud.
Look, half the "factories" selling online are trading companies with a nice website. They take your order, mark it up 20-40%, and send it to a real factory like ours.
How do you tell the difference? Ask for a live video call on the production floor. Ask to see the certificate with today's date on it. Ask for the address and check satellite view—does it show a 3,000m² facility or a strip mall office? We've had customers do all three. That's smart. Because factory direct means you're talking to the people who cut, bend, weld, and wire the letters. Not someone who forwards emails.

Front-lit channel letters are the storefront standard. Acrylic face, aluminum or stainless returns, LED modules inside. That's your basic retail sign. We make front-lit channel letters starting at $20 per letter.
Back-lit halo letters are the premium architectural look. The face is solid metal, and the light spills out the back against the wall. You'll pay $35-120 per letter. If you're doing a law office or a hotel, back-lit halo letters are worth the extra.
Rimless and dual-lit cover the gaps in between. Non-lit stainless letters are for people who don't want to deal with electrical at all.

Look, the material spec is where rookies lose money. You quote the lowest price, you get domestic acrylic that yellows in 12-18 months. Then your client calls you screaming. I've seen it happen more times than I can count.
Here's what nobody tells you: UV-resistant acrylic from Mitsubishi or Degussa lasts 5-8 years outdoors. Domestic acrylic lasts 1-2 years before yellowing. The price difference is maybe 20-30%. Pay it if the sign sees direct sun. For indoor signs, domestic is fine. For anything over 2.5 meters wide, use 5mm acrylic, not 3mm. The thinner stuff flexes and cracks at the mounting points.
Stainless steel: 304 is the workhorse. 10+ years outdoor, 18% chromium, 8% nickel. Stainless steel letters in 304 cost $15-40 per letter. 316 is marine grade, has 2-3% molybdenum, lasts 15+ years in coastal salt. It costs 20-30% more than 304.
For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach, pay for 316.
Aluminum weighs one-third of steel and won't rust. 8-12 years outdoors. If you're hanging letters on a wall with weight limits, aluminum's your answer.
LEDs: SMD 2835 is the industry standard, 100-150 lumens per watt. Samsung, Osram, or Lan Jing give you 5+ real years. Cheap no-name LEDs? 12-18 months. Then you're paying for a lift to replace them.
Warm white 3000-3500K belongs in hospitality. Neutral 4000-5000K is corporate and retail. Cool 6000-6500K is industrial and highway.
Most clients default to cool white because it's "bright." It also makes a restaurant look like a gas station. Ask what business they're in before you pick. It's a 60-second conversation that saves a $2,000 sign.
The ugly truth is most factories won't publish pricing because they want to size up your budget first. We don't care about your budget. Here's the range:
US retail installed runs $200-700 per front-lit letter, $400-1,000 for halo. Factory-direct product savings: 50-65%. That doesn't include shipping and tariffs, but you're still way ahead.
Light boxes run $80-250 per square meter. Neon flex signs $30-200. If someone quotes you $5 for a front-lit letter, run. That's domestic acrylic, cheap LEDs, and a power supply that'll die in 8 months.
I've seen this go wrong: a customer orders 20 letters and picks air freight because it's only a little more than express. Then the volumetric weight hits. Dimensional weight on a big box of hollow letters kills you.
Here's the real shipping picture. Express: 7-15 days, $30-100 for small orders. Air: 10-20 days, $4-12 per kg. Sea: 50-70 days, $80-200 per cubic meter LCL, or $1,200-3,000 for a full container. If you're ordering one sign for a client, express makes sense. If you're importing 200 letters for stock, sea is the only way.
And remember US Section 301 tariffs on Chinese signs: about 30%. That's not our fee. That's your government. Factor it into your landed cost before you quote your client.

You're not buying a stock item. Each order goes through design confirmation, laser cutting at ±0.1mm, TIG welding, grinding and polishing, CNC acrylic face, LED assembly, silicone sealing, an 8-12 hour aging test, 100% QC inspection, and export packaging with foam, carton, and plywood crate.
That's 10 steps. It takes 7-15 days depending on size and current queue. MOQ is 1 piece. We don't force you into a 50-letter minimum like some factories. But if you order 1 letter, you pay more per letter for setup. That's fair.
Need it faster? Pay for express cutting and we can push some jobs to 5 days. But the aging test stays. We don't skip the aging test.
Look, CE marking costs 20,000-50,000 RMB in China. Most factories say they have it. Ask to see the certificate with today's date and the factory name on it. If they hesitate, you've got your answer.
Here's what nobody tells you: UL 48 certification costs $4,000-15,000 and takes 4-9 months with quarterly audits. ETL is an accepted alternative and 10-30% cheaper. If you're selling into the US market and your customer requires UL, ask us directly. We carry CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001. UL we can arrange for specific project runs—it's not something every factory keeps active for every product because the cost is real.
IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets. It does NOT mean your sign survives a Florida hurricane. For coastal or extreme weather, ask about IP66 or IP68, and reinforce the mounting.
We cannot guarantee a 2-week door-to-door delivery to Chicago by sea. Sea freight is 50-70 days. Anyone who promises you sea freight in 3 weeks is lying or shipping your sign in someone's luggage.
We cannot make a $20 front-lit letter with Mitsubishi acrylic, Samsung LEDs, and a Mean Well power supply. The math doesn't work. If your budget is $20, you get domestic acrylic, generic LEDs, and a decent power supply. It'll work for 2 years. After that, you're on a ladder.
We cannot guarantee no color variation in painted finishes across different production batches. Pantone matching gets close, but if you order 20 letters now and 20 more in six months, there might be a slight difference. Plan accordingly.
The ugly truth is some clients expect $5,000 quality for $500 budget. We'd rather lose that order than ship garbage with our name on it.
Our warranty is 2 years on LEDs, 1 year on power supply. That's honest. Cheap LED modules fail at 12-18 months; ours are rated L70 ≥50,000 hours, which is 5+ real years at 12 hours a day. The power supply is the weak link—heat kills capacitors. We use decent brands, but if you run a sign in Arizona at 120°F, the supply might die sooner.
Warranty doesn't cover lightning strikes, floods, or someone pressure-washing an open channel letter. We've seen it all.
I've seen this go wrong: a customer orders letters with 8-inch returns because they wanted them "chunky." Then the shipping volume doubles because the boxes are mostly air. Hollow channel letters are shipped nested or assembled. If you don't need depth, specify 3-inch returns. It cuts freight and looks better on most storefronts.
Another one: forgetting that customs needs a commercial invoice with the correct HS code. Wrong HS code = delay = storage fees. We'll help, but you're responsible for import duties.
